There's a sci-fi horror movie begging to be made out of this. Add in some self-replicating nanotech to perform monitoring, maintenance and command/control functions but due to some technobabble during the inciting incident, it starts "gray goo"-ing the facility into more growth media and food. The good news is that we taught it to feel pain, bad news is now it intends to return the favor.
