Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).
Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

Play on linux is extremely old at this point and isn't really updated.
I understand that it was a tool that worked well for you in the past and you could probably get it working with the right dependencies but if I am being honest. It's not worth it.
Wine has improved drastically in the last few years and with that a lot of new apps have come around.
My personal favorite is bottles as it is very easy to use and works well for both games and applications.
Another option is lutris but it's a lot more oriented towards games than applications.
I hope I was of some help and good luck
