The details of Freddy Krueger’s ratty red-and-green sweater and knife-tipped glove will look extra horrific when A Nightmare on Elm Street, Wes Craven‘s 1984 slasher classic, arrives on 4K UHD just in time for a spooky season re-watch. To mark the occasion, io9 got to speak with its stars, Heather Langenkamp (who plays smart yet sleepy final girl Nancy Thompson) and Robert Englund (the dream demon himself), about their experiences making the film—and whether they’d be willing to get back in character again.

Cheryl Eddy, io9: Which scene in A Nightmare on Elm Street do you think will benefit the most from the 4K UHD upgrade?

Robert Englund: Here’s the thing. What we have to remember—and it’s difficult for me because I always wanted to be a movie actor—I always imagined Nightmare on Elm Street playing in a movie theater. But most of our fans discovered this film as part of the video generation. So they saw it less than perfect. Their memories of it are less than perfect. They have great memories of sharing it with mom and dad, or a stepdad or a step-mom, or brothers and sisters, you know, fresh from the video store, running home with a copy. But a lot of them also saw old, dog-eared copies that had been lying around in the bookshelf for a while or passed around the dormitory. This is an opportunity to see this better than Heather and I’ve ever seen it. To see it absolutely pristine and enhanced, you know, ultra high def 4K. I just had this experience with the old Alfred Hitchcock film Rear Window; it was mind blowing to see it in my living room, that perfect and wonderful. And I’m so looking forward to this. And there’s some new stuff [in the “uncut” version, included in the remastered release along with the theatrical version], right?

...

A Nightmare on Elm Street hits 4K Ultra HD on Digital October 1; it will be available on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Google Play, Fandango at Home, and more. The Blu-ray 4K UHD arrives October 15. The 4K UHD remaster includes both the theatrical and uncut versions; the latter features eight additional seconds of unrated footage.

Other previously released special features included are as follows, according to a Warner Bros. press release:

  • Ready Freddy Focus Points
  • Commentary with Wes Craven, Robert Englund, Heather Langenkamp, Ronnie Blakely, Robert Shaye, and Sara Risher.
  • Commentary with Wes Craven, Heather Langenkamp, John Saxon, and Jacques Haitkin.
  • Alternate endings
  • The House that Freddy Built: The Legacy of New Line Horror
  • Never Sleep Again: A Nightmare on Elm Street
  • Night Terrors: The Origins of Wes Craven’s Nightmares

Kevin Smith's The 4:30 Movie set for November 4K and Blu-ray release

Kevin Smith's sixteenth feature film, The 4:30 Movie, is coming to 4K and Blu-ray in November, including an Amazon exclusive steelbook

The 4:30 Movie, the sixteenth feature film from director Kevin Smith, received a theatrical release on September 13th, and now it has been revealed that the movie is coming to 4K and Blu-ray on November 5th! Copies of the physical media versions of the movie are available for pre-order on Amazon -- including an Amazon-exclusive steelbook edition where the case is designed to look like a large VHS tape and the discs look like VHS tape spools! A fitting design for a movie that's set in 1986. Images of the steelbook design can be seen right here:

The 4:30 Movie is a coming-of-age comedy that follows three sixteen-year-old friends who spend their Saturdays sneaking into movies at the local multiplex. But when one of the guys also invites the girl of his dreams to see the latest comedy, each of the teens will learn something serious about life and love before the credits roll.

Austin Zajur (Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark), Nicholas Cirillo (Outer Banks), and Reed Northrup (High Maintenance) play the sixteen year old friends, with Siena Agudong (Resident Evil) as the dream girl. Ken Jeong (The Hangover), Genesis Rodriguez (Tusk), Justin Long (Barbarian), Sam Richardson (Veep), Jason Lee (Almost Famous), Rachel Dratch (I Love My Dad), Kate Micucci (The Big Bang Theory), Adam Pally (Sonic the Hedgehog), Harley Quinn Smith (Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood), Jason Biggs (American Pie), and Method Man (How High) are also in the cast.

The 4:30 Movie was filmed at Smodcastle Cinemas in New Jersey, a theatre Smith now co-owns and used to hang out in every weekend when he was a teenager. Liz Destro, Josh Bachove, and Jordan Monsanto produced, with Bill Bromiley, Shanan Becker, and Jonathan Saba executive producing.

The back of the 4K release reveals that bonus features include an audio commentary with Kevin Smith and a making of featurette, as well as the trailer.

This film had a very limited release in the UK, you had to be either in Birmingham or London at the right time. Looks like I'll be catching the streaming version next month. Looking forward to it!

Cannibal! The Musical is making its debut on Blu-ray from Refuse Films. Shot on 16mm film and edited on video, Cannibal! The Musical is presented in high definition for the first time on Blu-ray.

Written and directed by Trey Parker (co-creator of South Park), this release is limited to only 3,000 units, playable worldwide and includes an exclusive slipcover featuring the original 1997 key art.

Brand new special features include new audio commentary, cast interviews, never-before-seen deleted scenes approved by Trey Parker and Matt Stone, over three hours of raw BTS footage, the UK cut of Alferd Packer: The Musical, plus hours of archival material.

Producer Jason McHugh confirms that the original 16mm footage of Cannibal! The Musical was lost somewhere in Colorado in the late 90s. Refuse Films uncovered the original Betacam master tape from the Troma archives in New York.

Cannibal! The Musical has been blown up from the original master tape and manually remastered without AI technology. The new and exclusive Refuse Films high-definition transfer is approved by Cannibal! The Musical’s director of photography, Robert Muratore, and remastered by Mark Brindle of UK post-production company Maniac Films.

...

Refuse Films is also excited to announce the launch of its new boutique Blu-ray sub-label, the TromArchive Collection. This label intends to release 50 years of Tromatic excess from Troma’s film archives to the Blu-ray format.

In addition to the world Blu-ray premiere of Trey Parker's Cannibal! The Musical (1993), Series 1 of the TromArchive Collection, features special editions of Troma Team classics The Toxic Avenger (1984) and Sgt. Kabukiman NYPD (1990), both titles directed by Troma co-founders Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz.

Each TromArchive Collection Blu-ray title is limited to 3,000 units, playable worldwide and features an exclusive slipcover featuring original Tromatic poster art and new sleeve designs by renowned graphic illustrator Mila K.

edit: Cannibal! The Musical is also being released by Vinegar Syndrome.

Streamed it first to see if it was worth buying on disc, it is.

They have a really cool commentary feature where the image is shrunk to a 4:3 image so they can split it top and bottom.

The top image is the film as presented, the bottom image is the raw footage before visual effects were applied.

It lets you see how much of the film was digital and how much was practical. Complete with commentary.

On December 3, 2024, Lionsgate is releasing a SteelBook for Kickboxer on 4K Ultra HD. Directed by Mark DiSalle (The Perfect Weapon) and David Worth (American Tigers), this 1989 cult martial arts hit further elevated the career of Jean-Claude Van Damme (Black Water), and was responsible of the sparking the kickboxing boom of the 80s and 90s.

In the film, kickboxing champ Eric Sloane (Dennis Alexio) is crippled in the ring by the evil Tong Po (Michel Qissi). Eric's younger brother, Kurt (Van Damme), seeks vengeance. Kurt learns Muay-Thai from fight guru Xian Chow (Dennis Chan). Thanks to Chow's unconventional training methods, Kurt becomes an expert kickboxer.

Details and features have yet to be announced, but there is a possibility that we may be seeing an uncut version, or at least a well-equipped edition, of this upcoming release. Blu-ray.com member JoelGoodsen had this to say:

As most of you probably know, I am a HUGE Kickboxer fan and own a 100% complete uncut copy on disc. The last year or so I have been driving everyone crazy in the Kino thread (sorry people!), championing for a UNCUT Kickboxer 4K with original audio. I've made no secret of how they butchered the US cut and it is unwatchable to me. The dubbing of Dennis Alexio's voice and cutting out a couple decent scenes (Kurt visiting Eric in hospital) are a couple examples of why. The uncut version is the superior film by far. Besides driving everyone insane in the Kino thread, behind the scenes, I was also emailing Lionsgate and making a passionate plea for it to happen. I reached out to basically everyone I could at Lionsgate.

In November, Lionsgate responded to me and said that due to my constant plea and request, they were going to do a Kickboxer 4K! (very proud moment for me personally. Hard work and persistence can pay off in life sometimes!). As you can imagine, I was over the moon and had a few bottles of MGD that night!

I was put in touch with the mastering department at Lionsgate, where I provided them via file transfer, my UNCUT copy of Kickboxer. Lionsgate told me that they have been searching for an uncut film print of Kickboxer, because as you know, you can't make a 4K without a film print, but so far, they had not found anything. All they had in their possession at their Burbank lab was a 1" C PAL tape dubbed in German. Due to this, I also extracted the original non dubbed audio from my uncut disc and provided the audio track to them.

Once I knew they had not been able to find any film prints so far, I literally reached out to numerous people and sources to see if I could find a uncut film print for them to use. I did have some minor success in locating a possible print, but as I do not work for LG and are basically just a passionate fan on a labour of love mission, I could only get so far. After exhausting every avenue and doing as much research as I could, I provided all possible leads to LG. Hopefully one of those leads has turned into something positive. I do know that if a UK film print was found, you could technically make a near fully uncut version with the US version.

Lionsgate informed me that nothing is set in stone yet, but if they can't find a film print of the uncut version to do a 4K, they may just include it as a special feature in SD or HD up-conversion. This is where the uncut English audio I provided should come in handy.

A couple weeks ago, I had a 10 minute phone conversation with director Mark DiSalle, who kindly gave me his time, even though he was walking his dog! I have also been in touch with co-director David Worth. Mr. Worth said he would happily provide a audio commentary and for me to set it up as he is ready whenever. He shot alot of scenes, such as the deleted hospital scene. I also have a few other cool things that I would like to provide and have offered to make this disc special. I have reached out to Mr. Felsher, but no response so far. I know the film like the back of my hand, so I have offered assistance should any prints turn up or any help is needed on special features. This is the one and only chance we will ever get for a uncut Kickboxer special edition. Hopefully we get plenty interviews etc.

In a nutshell; I have provided Lionsgate with a uncut copy for reference and the original English audio track from the uncut version. The good people at Lionesgate are doing everthing they can to release the uncut version on 4K, but it all comes down to finding a film print, which I have done my best to find/provide links for them and they are also doing their best looking for a uncut print. Hoping to speak to LG over the coming months, but it is a wait and see what happens situation in regards to a uncut print at the moment.

A personal big thank you from myself to Lionsgate for hearing the plea of this passionate film fan, allowing me to provide a copy of the uncut version/audio and giving Kickboxer a chance on 4K. I apologise for driving you all insane! haha. Hopefully I can help out with the release in the meantime and the release turns out as good as possible. Please keep in mind, it is still months away, things could change and nothing is set in stone. Lionsgate are doing their best and we can look forward to a final announcement when all the work is done.

Criterion offers up an eclectic new slate to their carefully curated collection of films. Now, a couple of these aren't too surprising, 8½ and Paris Texas are already on Blu-ray so we're getting welcome (if expected) upgrades. The biggest news is No Country for Old Men - the Coen Brothers' Oscar-winning thriller from the Cormac McCarthy classic novel is very good news. It was a big hitter on Blu-ray in its day, but a 4K Dolby Vision upgrade supervised by Roger Deakins is very exciting! Completing the eclectic list is Samo Hung's slick action classic Eastern Corridors - sadly only on Blu-ray but still should be a good disc.

The Terminator 40th Anniversary 4K will also get a Limited Steelbook Edition as it reveals release details

James Cameron and Arnold Schwarzenegger's breakout hit is celebrating 40 years with a new ultra high-def transfer.

By EJ Tangonan

September 16th 2024, 9:00am

While James Cameron is a filmmaker with a passion for new technology, an eye for detail and a champion for film experience, the 4K remasters of his past films have drawn controversy over the methods and results of the transfers. As Aliens, Terminator 2: Judgement Day, The Abyss and True Lies finally get 4K releases, many have complained about the use of AI and digital smoothing methods that may have compromised the integrity of the picture. The next film of his to have a big Ultra High-Def release is his breakout hit

1984's The Terminator.

Earlier this year, the film celebrated its 40th anniversary and saw a limited screening in theaters, which we saw. Now, Blu-ray.com has revealed what the specs for the physical release 4K will entail. The release is due to arrive at retailers on November 5. And Warner Bros. Home Entertainment will additionally be releasing a special Limited Edition Steelbook 4K on the same date.

The description reads,
"Arnold Schwarzenegger stars as the most fierce and relentless killing machine ever to threaten the survival of mankind! An indestructible cyborg -- a Terminator (Schwarzenegger) -- is sent back in time to kill Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton), the woman whose unborn son will become humanity's only hope. This legendary sci-fi thriller from pioneering writer/director James Cameron, written with Gale Anne Hurd, fires an arsenal of action and heart-stopping suspense that never lets up!"

Special Features and Technical Specs:

Optional English SDH, Spanish, and French subtitles for the main feature

4K RESTORATION OF THE FILM

I've recently gotten into buying DVDs instead of streaming things, but the problem that I'm having is that the only DVD player I have is my old Xbox 360 which doesn't support Blu-ray and I don't know if there are better DVD readers nowadays. Just wondering if there was anything I should specifically look for or avoid when shopping for a new player.

One of the most charming anime of the 80s is Giant Gorg. and we are finally getting a remastered Blu-ray release of it this November.

Written and directed by the hugely talented Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, it deals with the plucky Tagami Yu following in the footsteps of his dead father. He ends up on a newly arisen island in the South Pacific. Full of ancient secrets and a massive corporation that wants those secrets for itself.

...

I reviewed the DVD release back in 2016, and in the time since Japan did an amazing Blu-ray remaster of the anime (shown below). It’s this remaster that is finally coming Westward in November.

Set over 26 episodes, this is one of those anime that should be binge watched. Much like Future Boy Conan, Giant Gorg is a unique and special anime that has a kind of rare narrative pacing that isn’t seen in more modern shows.

...

Even if you picked up the Giant Gorg DVD release a while back, this Blu-ray remaster is something else entirely and is an essential purchase as far as I am concerned.

Released on November 26, you can pre-order the Blu-ray from Crunchyroll’s online store for the currently reduced price of $37.46.

Also today, we’ve have word from retail sources (and customers who have pre-ordered the tiles) that Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment’s recently street-dated 4K catalog titles—Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest (1959), Mel Brooks’ Blazing Saddles (1974), and James Cameron’s The Terminator (1984)—have been pushed to 11/19 from 11/5. That probably has to do with the added time needed to replicate enough production to meet demand. Adjust your plans accordingly.

In any case, be aware that North by Northwest (1959) and Blazing Saddles (1974) will each include HDR10 and Dolby Atmos audio, while The Terminator (1984) will include both Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos audio.

In announcement news this afternoon, Umbrella Entertainment has just revealed that they’ve completed a new 4K restoration of Richard Stanley’s Hardware (1990) and will be releasing it on physical 4K UHD in the near future.

Meanwhile, in December (12/4 specifically), Umbrella will release Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s Pulse (2001) on 4K + Blu-ray, and Alejandro Amenábar’s Open Your Eyes (1997), David and Nathan Zellner’s Sasquatch Sunset (2024), James B. Harris’ Boiling Point (1993), Francis Galluppi’s The Last Stop in Yuma Country (2023), Jack Clark and Jim Weir’s Birdeater (2023), and Adam Kamien and Luke Rynderman’s The Speedway Murders (2023) all on Blu-ray. Look also for Georges Franju’s Eyes Without a Face (1960) on 4K + Blu-ray on 11/6.

...

Now then, the big news today is that Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has just unveiled an amazing new Frank Capra at Columbia Collection, which includes 20 deep-catalog classic films, 9 of which are in 4K Ultra HD! Look for the set to street on 11/19.

The films included are So This Is Love (1929), The Way of the Strong (1928), That Certain Thing (1928), Submarine (1928) in 4K UHD and SDR, The Younger Generation (1929) in 4K UHD and SDR, Flight (1929), Ladies of Leisure (1930), Rain or Shine (1930), Dirigible (1931) in 4K UHD and SDR, The Miracle Woman (1931), Platinum Blonde (1931) in 4K UHD and SDR, American Madness (1932), The Bitter Tea of General Yen (1932), Forbidden (1932), Lady for a Day (1933), It Happened One Night (1934) in 4K UHD with Dolby Vision HDR, Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936) in 4K UHD with Dolby Vision HDR, Lost Horizon (1937) in 4K UHD with Dolby Vision HDR, You Can’t Take It With You (1938) in 4K UHD with Dolby Vision HDR, and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939) in 4K UHD with Dolby Vision HDR, as well as the Frank Capra: Mr. America (2024) documentary!

Fans of the classic horror-comedy anthology Creepshow can pick up a new limited-edition version of the remastered 4K Blu-ray. Creepshow's limited edition comes with an appropriately creepy yet humorous steelbook case. The new edition released this month, but it's already on sale for $33 at Amazon and Walmart (down from $40). Directed by George Romero and written by novelist Stephen King, Creepshow originally released in 1982, spawning a franchise that has seen a resurgence in popularity in recent years thanks to Shudder's anthology show and a new series of comic books. The original film remains the best of the bunch--Shudder's series is quite good, though--and the film holds up well more than 40 years later.

Creepshow Limited Edition comes with 4K Blu-ray and standard 1080p Blu-ray discs. The film was remastered in 4K using the original camera negatives. Both discs are packed with special features, including audio commentary with George Romero, a roundtable on the making of Creepshow, and more behind-the-scenes content. You can find a full list of special features at the bottom of this article.

...

This isn't the first 4K release of Creepshow. Last year, Creepshow received a new collector's edition with the same bonus features. If you bought that version, the only reason to pick up the new edition would be for the steelbook case. Creepshow Collector's Edition is available for $26 (was $37) at Amazon and Walmart.

With no one to turn to, Jeff battles his worst fears and begins a desperate, danger-ridden search to find Amy - before it's too late!

After Australia and the US getting special edition blurays, I'm happy to see the UK finally getting a decent release as well. A great film that i haven't watched since the DVD release. I think an upgrade is in order.
