On December 3, 2024, Lionsgate is releasing a SteelBook for Kickboxer on 4K Ultra HD. Directed by Mark DiSalle (The Perfect Weapon) and David Worth (American Tigers), this 1989 cult martial arts hit further elevated the career of Jean-Claude Van Damme (Black Water), and was responsible of the sparking the kickboxing boom of the 80s and 90s.

In the film, kickboxing champ Eric Sloane (Dennis Alexio) is crippled in the ring by the evil Tong Po (Michel Qissi). Eric's younger brother, Kurt (Van Damme), seeks vengeance. Kurt learns Muay-Thai from fight guru Xian Chow (Dennis Chan). Thanks to Chow's unconventional training methods, Kurt becomes an expert kickboxer.

Details and features have yet to be announced, but there is a possibility that we may be seeing an uncut version, or at least a well-equipped edition, of this upcoming release. Blu-ray.com member JoelGoodsen had this to say:

As most of you probably know, I am a HUGE Kickboxer fan and own a 100% complete uncut copy on disc. The last year or so I have been driving everyone crazy in the Kino thread (sorry people!), championing for a UNCUT Kickboxer 4K with original audio. I've made no secret of how they butchered the US cut and it is unwatchable to me. The dubbing of Dennis Alexio's voice and cutting out a couple decent scenes (Kurt visiting Eric in hospital) are a couple examples of why. The uncut version is the superior film by far. Besides driving everyone insane in the Kino thread, behind the scenes, I was also emailing Lionsgate and making a passionate plea for it to happen. I reached out to basically everyone I could at Lionsgate.

In November, Lionsgate responded to me and said that due to my constant plea and request, they were going to do a Kickboxer 4K! (very proud moment for me personally. Hard work and persistence can pay off in life sometimes!). As you can imagine, I was over the moon and had a few bottles of MGD that night!

I was put in touch with the mastering department at Lionsgate, where I provided them via file transfer, my UNCUT copy of Kickboxer. Lionsgate told me that they have been searching for an uncut film print of Kickboxer, because as you know, you can't make a 4K without a film print, but so far, they had not found anything. All they had in their possession at their Burbank lab was a 1" C PAL tape dubbed in German. Due to this, I also extracted the original non dubbed audio from my uncut disc and provided the audio track to them.

Once I knew they had not been able to find any film prints so far, I literally reached out to numerous people and sources to see if I could find a uncut film print for them to use. I did have some minor success in locating a possible print, but as I do not work for LG and are basically just a passionate fan on a labour of love mission, I could only get so far. After exhausting every avenue and doing as much research as I could, I provided all possible leads to LG. Hopefully one of those leads has turned into something positive. I do know that if a UK film print was found, you could technically make a near fully uncut version with the US version.

Lionsgate informed me that nothing is set in stone yet, but if they can't find a film print of the uncut version to do a 4K, they may just include it as a special feature in SD or HD up-conversion. This is where the uncut English audio I provided should come in handy.

A couple weeks ago, I had a 10 minute phone conversation with director Mark DiSalle, who kindly gave me his time, even though he was walking his dog! I have also been in touch with co-director David Worth. Mr. Worth said he would happily provide a audio commentary and for me to set it up as he is ready whenever. He shot alot of scenes, such as the deleted hospital scene. I also have a few other cool things that I would like to provide and have offered to make this disc special. I have reached out to Mr. Felsher, but no response so far. I know the film like the back of my hand, so I have offered assistance should any prints turn up or any help is needed on special features. This is the one and only chance we will ever get for a uncut Kickboxer special edition. Hopefully we get plenty interviews etc.

In a nutshell; I have provided Lionsgate with a uncut copy for reference and the original English audio track from the uncut version. The good people at Lionesgate are doing everthing they can to release the uncut version on 4K, but it all comes down to finding a film print, which I have done my best to find/provide links for them and they are also doing their best looking for a uncut print. Hoping to speak to LG over the coming months, but it is a wait and see what happens situation in regards to a uncut print at the moment.

A personal big thank you from myself to Lionsgate for hearing the plea of this passionate film fan, allowing me to provide a copy of the uncut version/audio and giving Kickboxer a chance on 4K. I apologise for driving you all insane! haha. Hopefully I can help out with the release in the meantime and the release turns out as good as possible. Please keep in mind, it is still months away, things could change and nothing is set in stone. Lionsgate are doing their best and we can look forward to a final announcement when all the work is done.

The NHS is going to use drones to fly blood samples across London to avoid the traffic.

Drone flights will mean the samples can be transported in a fraction of the time it currently takes couriers via road, officials said.

Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust has launched a pilot scheme that intends to drastically speed up the time taken to move blood from major hospitals in the capital to labs for analysis.

Usually, moving samples between Guy's Hospital and the lab at St Thomas' Hospital takes more than half an hour on the road.

However, the same journey can be done in less than two minutes by drone, officials said.

The research team also said there were environmental benefits to the switch in transport methods.

"With Halloween just over a month away, London's eeriest tales are resurfacing, and one such spine-chilling story hails from the depths of the London Underground. Frequented by thousands of commuters each day, many are unaware that the Central line platform at Liverpool Street station was the scene of a terrifying ghostly encounter..."

The owner of the Guardian has confirmed it is in talks to sell the Observer, the world's oldest Sunday newspaper, to Tortoise Media.

Tortoise has approached Guardian Media Group (GMG) with an offer to invest around £25m over the next five years on the "editorial and commercial renewal" of the Observer.

Tortoise was launched five years ago by James Harding, a former BBC News chief and a former editor of the Times newspaper.

The Guardian reported that the title will remain a seven-day-a-week digital operation regardless of the outcome of negotiations with Tortoise about the Observer.

Observer staff were told that the investment would "help to safeguard its future" as a standalone product.

GMG is not actively trying to sell the Observer, but it is examining the Tortoise proposal to see if it is viable.

Founded in 1791, the Observer is the world's oldest Sunday newspaper, with a staff of around 70.

Britain’s Liberal Democrat party passed a motion in favour of suspending arms exports to Israel and backing an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip on Monday at its annual conference in Brighton.

The motion, which was tabled by British-Palestinian MP Layla Moran, passed with an overwhelming majority and also called for Hamas to be ousted from Gaza "through diplomacy".

It also recognised Iran as an “existential threat” to western democracies and asked for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to be proscribed as a terrorist organisation.

Moran said she had worked with both pro-Israeli and pro-Palestinian groups to formulate the motion, which may explain its mixture of positions.

The search for an escaped capybara which fled a zoo four days ago is continuing "around the clock".

Cinnamon fled her habitat at Hoo Zoo and Dinosaur World in Telford on Friday and entered woodlands within the zoo grounds.

The last sighting of her was on Saturday, after she managed to get beyond the perimeter fence.

Zoo owner Will Dorrell said he believed Cinnamon had made it to the Humber Brook river, near the attraction's northern boundary, where "she's probably living her best life".

...

Cinnamon escaped when keepers entered the capybara enclosure to mow the paddock, as she was hidden in long grass near the gate, Mr Dorrell said.

When the gate was opened, she slipped around the side of a tractor to leave the enclosure.

"Our two young capybara here are always trying to work out a different way of trying to cause us headaches," Mr Dorrell said.

"They’re extremely intelligent which a lot of people might not necessarily appreciate.

"She seemed to know what we were going to do and was waiting there ready for that gate to be opened."

While a capybara has never escaped from the zoo before, Mr Dorrell said one managed to dig under a fence to get into an ostrich enclosure a few years ago, but quickly realised she wanted to come back

It’s been almost 20 years since the pastel-hued houses in the picture-perfect harbour village of Balamory appeared on television screens.

On Tuesday, the BBC has announced it had commissioned two new series of the beloved CBeebies show to return in 2026.

Originally produced between 2002 until 2005, it is expected that the new series will once again be set in the Scottish village of Balamory where coloured houses nestle round a charming harbour with stories centred on a nursery school and teacher.

Balamory’s first run attracted millions of viewers across the world, spawned a live show and won best pre-school live action series at the 2004 Bafta children’s awards.

The show will once again be filmed in Scotland, the broadcaster said, either in the original location of Tobermory or another Scottish location such as Rothesay.

A neo-Nazi who amassed an "armoury" at his home in Stirlingshire has been found guilty of crimes including plans to commit an act of terrorism.

Alan Edward, who had nearly 28,000 followers on social media, had discussed an attack on a LBGT group in Falkirk, the High Court in Stirling heard.

He denied all the offences, but a jury found him guilty of charges under the Terrorism Act, racism, anti-Semitism, holocaust denial and breach of the peace.

The trial heard that Edward wrote the "the quickest way to someone's heart is with a high power 7.62mm round".

Police found weapons and equipment including a crossbow, 14 knives - some with Nazi and SS insignia, machetes, a tomahawk, a samurai sword, knuckledusters, a catapult, an extendable baton and a stun gun.

They also found an air pistol, an SS-style skull mask, goggles and a respirator, fighting gloves with hardened knuckles, pellets, ball bearings, and hunting tips for crossbow arrows.

Prosecutors said it amounted to "an armoury" of weapons.

Edward also had an indoor cannabis plantation that he was growing to sell.

The court heard he possessed and expressed "a set of ideals with a neo-Nazi outlook, incorporating notions of white supremacy, the notion of racial purity of whites, racism, anti-semitism, and hatred of homosexuals and transgender people".

The true origins of the metallic specimen were debated for decades. Eventually, Blink-182 frontman and UFO enthusiast Tom DeLonge’s To the Stars Academy got a hold of it. The organization independently researches possible alien phenomena, and the sample had an apparently unprecedented material structure that could indicate an extraterrestrial technosignature. Then, the All-Domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO), which investigates unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP) for the U.S. government, took over the investigation to learn more about the object’s physical and chemical properties that made it potentially capable of inertial mass reduction—levitation.

...

Analysis showed that the isotopic signatures of magnesium and lead indicated a terrestrial origin. The magnesium’s isotopic signature had undergone some fractionation, or separation of lighter and heavier isotopes, probably due to stress from heat and physical or chemical manufacturing processes. However, it was still within the normal range for magnesium that forms on Earth, not an alien biosignature.

Strengthening the case for a local origin, the magnesium in this sample also showed a proportion of isotopes that occurs only in our solar system. Scientists know this because the isotopic signature of magnesium originally comes from a particular star-forming region and so is unique to each star system. Magnesium is an extremely common element in the universe, produced in great amounts by larger, older stars that scatter it into space when they die and go supernova. It is often recycled by young star systems, where it forms a unique isotopic signature, depending on the conditions.

Moving on, the lead in the object also matched the isotopic signatures for lead that originates on Earth. These signatures are so distinct that there is no way they could have come from any other body—even the moon.

With no alien biosignatures present in the sample, the ORNL scientists turned their attention to technosignatures. Scanning transmission electron microscopy revealed that the crystalline structure of the magnesium was similar to the magnesium in alloys manufactured on Earth. With that confirmed, they tried to determine if the sample could have been part of a terahertz waveguide.

...

To qualify as a piece of alien technology, the sample would need to have a single layer of pure bismuth between layers of the magnesium alloy. This is because unadulterated bismuth can guide energy just like the magnetron in your microwave. Unlike anything in your microwave, bismuth is capable of directing terahertz waves. The problem is that the bismuth in this sample is neither pure nor in a single layer. There are multiple layers of bismuth between the magnesium layers, and the bismuth itself contains lead, both of which would disrupt its functioning as a waveguide.

...

“ORNL has a high level of confidence that all data indicate the material was manufactured terrestrially—albeit using an uncommon mixture of elements by today’s standards—and then incurred damage caused by mechanical and heat stressors,” according to the report.

In a latrine in ancient Antiochia ad Cragum (modern-day Turkey), archaeologists uncovered mosaics that’ll make you laugh… or blush. These aren’t your average ancient art pieces; they are full-on dirty jokes! And they’re as cheeky as anything you’d find scrawled on the back of a bathroom door today.

The mosaics, dating back to the 2nd century AD, portray well-known characters from Roman and Greek mythology—only this time with a hilarious twist. One shows Narcissus, who’s supposed to be obsessed with his own reflection, but here? He’s ogling his private parts instead! Yeah, not exactly how you’d see him in a museum.

Then there’s Ganymedes, a handsome Trojan youth who, in mythology, was kidnapped by Zeus. The twist? Zeus appears as a heron instead of an eagle, using a sponge to clean Ganymedes’ genitals. Ancient Romans had no chill! They were clearly poking fun at the very myths they held dear, and it all happened in a public restroom!

...

But it’s not just about the jokes. These mosaics offer a rare glimpse into the personalities of people who lived 2,000 years ago. According to Michael Hoff, one of the archaeologists leading the excavation, the humor in these mosaics connects us to those who lived in Antiochia ad Cragum in a way that buildings or temples can’t. It’s personal, relatable, and very, very human.

Who knew that a Roman toilet could be so revealing?

The Outcasts, which tells the story of a ‘mad’ young woman in pre-famine Ireland who meets a feared shaman and has her powerful true nature revealed to her, is the great lost classic of Irish cinema. Combining gritty realism in its depiction of rural Irish poverty, sexual frankness and mythic grandeur, it had a tremendously powerful effect on Irish cinephiles of a certain age, myself included, but has been impossible to see in any decent form in the four decades since its release.

A beautiful new restoration by the Irish Film Archive is finally putting this right, and a generation of folk-horror fans are about to get the opportunity to see this poetic, unforgettable work for the first time.

I spoke to its writer-director, Robert Wynne-Simmons, who also scripted the classic British folk-horror The Blood on Satan’s Claw (1971), about the production of the film and his feelings about seeing it rediscovered by a new generation.

Plans have been unveiled to reintroduce White-tailed Eagle to Cumbria.

White-tailed Eagle was once found across Cumbria, with the last recorded breeding attempt near Haweswater in 1787. Now, the Cumbrian White-tailed Eagle Project has been exploring the possibility of bringing the species back to the county.

The raptor has been successfully reintroduced to Scotland and the Isle of Wight, as well as to Ireland. There are now breeding populations across Scotland and Ireland, while in 2023 a White-tailed Eagle chick was born in southern England for the first time in 243 years.

Farmers and landowners in Higher Tier agri-environment schemes are facing uncertainty as they lack a clear pathway into the newer Environmental Land Management (ELM) schemes.

The NFU is calling on Defra to give farmers in existing Higher Tier schemes access to equal payments for options delivering the same outcomes in other ELM schemes, such as the Sustainable Farming Incentive and Countryside Stewardship (CS).

Many farmers with Higher Tier stewardship agreements ending this year – and many others on annual rollovers on historic payments – have been left unable to apply for a newer Higher Tier ELM scheme because it hasn’t been made available.
