It’s the second season of Dark Winds. Plus: the wild story of cannabis smuggler Howard Marks. Here’s what to watch this evening

10pm, U&AlibiThis western noir crime thriller was an unsung gem when it started last year, so the second season is a welcome return. Lt Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon) is reunited with his deputy turned private eye Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon) when separate cases lead to the same suspect. Their investigations take them to the high desert of Navajo country, where old wounds are about to be ripped open. Hollie Richardson

People still continue to buy the Bose TV Speaker even after we made a dedicated video on it…. To get you to stop, we took to facebook marketplace and gave ourselves the SAME budget and managed to buy a 5.1 surround sound setup with dedicated receivers!

Considering this is the home video section, I thought this would apply to this community. Reminds me of when I had my tiny dirt cheap 5.1 system, which sounded great to me. Especially when playing Bad Company 2 on my Xbox360.

We were on a trip in Scotland and walking through a somewhat shady neighbourhood. These 2 kids were walking towards us and randomly passed a football to me, expecting me to pass it back.

Is this a usual occurrence? I have never had this happen in my country but I have seen it done for videos. I'm asking about the UK specifically because I feel like you guys have an interesting street football culture. Maybe I'm wrong and this is a normal thing in lots of countries.

Firms which raised prices for key epilepsy medicine – causing NHS costs to soar to £50 million – found by the CAT to have breached competition law.

  • In a judgment handed down today, the CAT found that Pfizer and Flynn abused their dominant positions by charging excessive prices for a life-saving epilepsy drug, phenytoin sodium capsules, between 2012 and 2016.

  • The CAT set aside the CMA’s decision, but made its own infringement findings against the parties on 7 out of the 8 infringements originally found by the CMA.

  • The CAT found that the parties intentionally abused their dominant positions and that “both Pfizer and Flynn were gouging the market in a manner that can only be characterised as unjustifiable or opportunistic or – in a word – unfair”. The CAT went on to impose combined fines on Pfizer and Flynn of £69 million.

MPs are to summon Elon Musk to testify about [Twitter's] role in spreading disinformation, in a parliamentary inquiry into the UK riots and the rise of false and harmful AI content, the Guardian has learned.

Senior executives from Meta, which runs Facebook and Instagram, and TikTok are also expected to be called for questioning as part of a Commons science and technology select committee social media inquiry.

The first hearings will take place in the new year, amid rising concern that UK online safety laws risk being outpaced by rapidly advancing technology and the politicisation of platforms such as [Twitter].

The MPs will investigate the consequences of generative AI, which was used in widely shared images posted on Facebook and [Twitter] inciting people to join Islamophobic protests after the killing of three schoolgirls in Southport in August. They will also investigate Silicon Valley business models that “encourage the spread of content that can mislead and harm”.
[…]
[Twitter] did not respond when asked if Musk would testify in the UK, although it appears unlikely. The world’s richest man is preparing to take on a senior role in the Trump White House and has been highly critical of the Labour government, including weighing in on changes to inheritance tax on farms by saying on Monday that “Britain is going full Stalin”. During the riots that followed the Southport killings he said: “Civil war is inevitable.”
[…]
[Chi Onwurah, Labour chair of the Commons science and technology select committee social media inquiry,] said the inquiry would attempt to “get to the bottom of the links between social media algorithms, generative AI, and the spread of harmful or false content”.

It will also look at the use of AI to supplement search engines such as Google, which was found recently to be regurgitating false and racist claims about people in African countries having low average IQs. Google said the AI overviews containing the claims had violated its policies and had been removed.

A surprise amount of Brits say they would take anti-obesity drugs if they were given to them for free on the NHS.

Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonist are a family of medications that help manage blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes, but have also been found to help obese people lose weight.

The drugs include Mounjaro, also known as tirzepatide, and semaglutide, which is sold under the brand names Wegovy, Ozempic and Rybelsus.

The survey of 1,078 adults, carried out by Ipsos, found 24% of people would use weight-loss jabs if they were provided for free by the health service.

When asked about their own body image, four in 10 told the survey they think they are overweight or obese.

Britain is expected to supply Storm Shadow missiles for use by Ukraine on targets inside Russia, now that the US president, Joe Biden, has agreed to do the same for the similar American long-range Atacms weapon.

Keir Starmer, the prime minister, said at the G20 summit that the UK recognised it needed to “double down” on its support for Ukraine, while diplomatic sources briefed they expected other European countries to follow the US lead.

...

Russia, however, accused the west of escalation and said that Biden risked adding “fuel to the fire” in Ukraine, and while Donald Trump remained silent on the issue, his son Don Jr accused the military industrial complex of wanting to get “world war three going”.

Storm Shadow missiles have a range of about 250km (155 miles), similar to the US Atacms, and have in the past been given to Kyiv by the UK and France to strike targets inside Ukraine’s internationally recognised borders.

But the US retained an effective veto on their use because it supplies a guidance system and repeated lobbying by the UK had failed to shift the US position, which has only begun to soften after the election victory of Donald Trump earlier this month.

...

Ukraine had also become increasingly exasperated with Britain on the issue of long-range missiles, complaining earlier this month that not only had there been no progress on their use inside Russia but that the UK had stopped supplying them at all.

Every year, countries lose $492bn in tax a year to multinational corporations and wealthy individuals using tax havens to underpay tax, says the Tax Justice Network. Two-thirds of these losses, or $347.6bn, are attributable to tomultinational corporations shifting profit offshore to underpay tax. The remaining $144.8bn is due to “wealthy individuals hiding their wealth offshore.”

Almost half of these losses come from eight countries that oppose the adoption of a tax treaty under the aegis of the UN: Australia, Canada, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, the United Kingdom and the United States, says the report. These “harmful eight,” according to the Tax Justice Network, cost the world $212bn in lost tax revenue every year.

A rare and protected fungus has been found at a nature reserve in Canterbury.

The Hericium erinaceus, or lion's mane fungus, has the highest level of legal protection in the UK due to its scarcity. Kent Wildlife Trust said it had been spotted by a visitor.

It is illegal in the UK to collect, uproot or destroy the fungus and anyone doing so could face six months in prison or a £5,000 fine.

According to the estimates provided by the government, in the years ending March 2025, March 2026 and March 2028 there will be an additional 50,000 pensioners in relative poverty after housing costs.

In the years ending March 2027, March 2029 and March 2030 an additional 100,000 pensioners would be in relative poverty after housing costs.

The annual figures are rounded to the nearest 50,000. [Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall] said this meant "small variations in the underlying numbers impacted can lead to much larger changes in the rounded headline numbers".

The cumulative total over the years does not necessarily refer to individual pensioners, who could move in and out of relative poverty over time depending on their personal circumstances.

Currently the government estimates 1.9 million pensioners - around 15% - are in relative poverty.

The new estimates, published on Tuesday, suggest the cuts to the winter fuel payment would increase pensioner poverty by 0.5 percentage points.

A person is considered to be living in relative poverty if they have less than 60% of the median income.

In her letter, Kendall said the work and pensions department had written to 120,000 pensioners to encourage them to claim the pension credit to which they may be entitled.
