Here are the results of my "What is your favorite browser?" survey, here on Mastodon. These are some very interesting results.

It is clear that the incumbents are not getting a lot of love. Edge gets 2% and Chrome gets 5%. These browsers are widely used, but not very popular, based on this survey.

Safari does a lot better at 16%, the same as Vivaldi. The enthusiasm level from those that use Vivaldi is high and plenty of people also mention Vivaldi as a secondary option.

Opera gets just 1%.

Firefox gets 60%, so clearly a strong showing here in the Fediverse, although many say they use Firefox only because they do not want to use a Chromium based browser.

The cool part is then that 13% say they prefer another browser. Plenty of smaller browsers getting a mention, which is nice.

If you notice that the total is higher than 100%, then that is because I allowed people to select more than one browser, although most did not.

If you are still using Chrome or Edge, maybe it is time to try something new? You have a choice!

I wish I could have used Presto, but sadly that is not an option. The Presto code was much better in many ways that both Gecko and Blink. It was all in one. Very little 3rd party code. It compiled in a couple of minutes on a slow computer.

At this time the Chromium codebase is the best available.

Clearly there is a lot more to a browser than just the core and we modify the core as needed as well, so I hope you see we are providing something special here.

@fluchtkapsel

Indeed, we are using Chromium, but there really is not a lot of choice. I hope you will make the switch. If you liked Opera 12, you will love Vivaldi.

@tedel@writing.exchange

Thanks for your kind words. Did you try Workspaces in Vivaldi as well? Quick commands? The searchable Window panel?

@claridelune@vivaldi.net , glad you like it!

Have your tried tab stacks and workspaces in Vivaldi?

@Mossheart@lemmy.ca

Glad to hear that. Thanks for your support.

Have you tried looking at the Windows panel? You can sort tabs there. The search there is pretty helpful as well.

We continue to work on the ad blocker. It will continue to improve.

@schnedan ,

We have found that having things integrated has significant benefits, but of course there is a bit of getting used to. Give it a try!

As a side note, it is easy to run multiple instances of Vivaldi, so you can run Mail, Calendar and Feeds in one instance and most of your Web browsing in another. There is flexibility here.

@geillescas@techhub.social , I have not tried them, but it looks like they have taken some inspiration from Vivaldi. Even marketing.

@p4@masto.ai , I am very proud of what we built at Opera at that time, but you will find that and more in Vivaldi now.

What is your favorite browser? Feel free to share why.

I am sad to see the layoffs at the Mozilla Foundation. Mozilla plays an important role on the Internet. I may not always agree with the choices they make, but they still play an important role.

After my having 3 Sinclair computers, I moved on to Atari ST, for a week... before I switched it for an Amiga. At the time, Atari and Amiga were the big names in home computing, while those with more funds might have gone with a Mac or a PC.

What did you use?

Sinclair Spectrum or Commodore 64?

My first computer was a Sinclair ZX81. I had it about a year before I switched to a Sinclair Spectrum and a couple of years later I moved on to Sinclair QL.

Some friends of mine had a Commodore 64. They were more expensive, better hardware, but less accessible when it came to programming, IMHO, at least using Basic. So my friends did more gaming and I did more programming.

Did you have any of these? Which camp were you in?
