On the other hand, their understanding of Marxism-Leninism is extremely advanced -- I talked to someone who teaches his fellow members of the 九三学社 (Sept 3 Society) how to apply Marxism-Leninism, dialectical materialism, MZT, etc to scientific and medical work.

I have to say, being in China and away from constantly having to hear pro-imperialist and extremely reactionary nonsense is extremely refreshing. The main downside is that a lot of people have quite... feudal(?) thoughts about marriage.

The most well-known mathematician with left-wing political views was [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_Grothendieck#Political_activism](Alexander Grothendieck), who was an anarchist, so I guess not based by our standards.

On the maximally reactionary end, [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erich_K%C3%A4hler](Erich Kähler) volunteered for the Wehrmacht and stayed loyal to the Third Reich until at least the 1980s (I suppose no different from the government of west Germany).

Perelman himself seems to have disappeared completely from public view. Apparently, there is no even somewhat recent news about him, even in Russian.

If anything, he believes the imperialist propaganda that the Yuan and Qing dynasties weren't actually China -- invented specifically to justify the Japanese occupation.
