I have nothing meaningful to add, and I barely know how to use Lemmy (or I would DM), but....

/u/August27th@lemmy.ca, your reply is brilliant and very informative for someone like me who has no idea what the industry is like.

You clearly put a lot of heart and soul into crafting a reply that is useful for the OP and all the rest of us, and I wanted to just reach out and say how much I really, really appreciate your effort and your thoughts.

Thanks for posting that!

/u/dependencyinjection@discuss.tchncs.de ... hang in there... they say that "courage" is not the absence of fear, but the act of moving forward in spite of that fear. The fact you joined the industry despite being unsure of yourself speaks to your courage, and I bet your courageous will take you far!

I've been wondering if the AOL walled garden works as a metaphor for the non-fediverse Internet.

For my friends old enough to remember pre-Internet AOL, I have described the difficulties getting your mind around fediverse concepts as similar to the paradigm shift we all went through when first wandering out from AOL onto the open World Wide Web (ie, HTTP websites).

What do you mean, there's more than one area to talk about the latest episode of Friends?! Isn't that confusing? How do you know where to go for that content?

In AOL, I can just enter a keword. What's this about a search engine? Why do I need to use some unrelated website, like Hotbot, to find out where people are talking about Friends?

For a couple of my friends, this analogy has sparked their openness to digging in a little and learning about Lemmy, etc, and it's made then more forgiving of the fact that certain aspects are not intuitive right off the bat.

Summary:

Hey, y'all!

  1. Do you know how I can check to see if my SDF Mastadon account request got approved or not?
  2. Is this even the right community to ask this question, or is there a better one I should use?

Details (Mastadon account question):

I applied for an account on SDF's Mastadon instance (https://mastodon.sdf.org/) about two weeks ago, and I know the account has to be approved before I can use it and that the folks approving accounts probably have a huge backlog to work through.

I haven't heard anything back for a couple of weeks, so today I tried to log in to see if the account works. I got an "Invalid E-mail address or password" error, but it did let me go through the reset password flow.

However, after I reset the password and tried to log in with the new one, I got the same "Invalid E-mail address or password" error. (I carefully checked to make sure I was copying the same password in for the reset flow and the login flow to make sure I didn't just fat-finger it.)

Obviously, my account does not seem to be active. Should I take from this that I'm still waiting for an approval decision, or does this mean my request was denied and I should look for another Mastadon instance to join?

Either way is cool and no hard feelings, I'm just not sure how to interpret it!

Details (right community question):

I'm posting here because I think my question relates to SDF policy (did SDF approve my Mastadon account request or not), but it's also a tech support question. I couldn't find a community on this instance that seemed geared for tech support on these sorts of issues, but I might have missed something.

Please let me know if there's a better place for this post, and I'll move it over! (I don't think Lemmy admins can move a post, but I was thinking of deleting and reposting in whatever community you guys suggest.)

The end

Cheers and thanks for everything the SDF is doing to welcome dorky fedivese newbies such as myself! :-D
