I'm shooting a movie currently and after a conversation with my director we realized that we couldn't think of a single prequel that we liked. However, we both agreed that there has to be at least one.

What do you think? Are there any good prequels?

The first thing that came to mind, after the fact, was The House of the Dragon the Game of Thrones prequel.

“Rogue One” is a pretty well-regarded prequel.

[–] mjhrrs@kbin.social 5 points 1 year ago

One of the best of the newer movies, imho

[–] SeaOfTranquility@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago

I think this movie is so good because it's the only actual war movie in the Star **Wars ** franchise.

[–] AviationAJ@beehaw.org 14 points 1 year ago (6 children)

Call me crazy, but I really like the Star Wars prequels.

[–] str82L@kbin.social 7 points 1 year ago

You're crazy!

No one will ever argue that they're stellar examples of quality filmmaking, but I feel like they've aged very well and get better when you consider the period of the franchise they opened up to so many other pieces of media that genuinely are brilliant.

And the meme value is through the fucking roof.

[–] AJYoung@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago

I agree with you, they are phenomenal.

Amen! It’s my childhood.

[–] FiskFisk33@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

I love them, but, I think thats mostly up to the few actors that made it work!

the lines are super clunky, but oby, palpy, dooky just works, and are a blast to watch.

The good ones have been mentioned like Fire walk with me and Better Call Saul, where I think they are better than the ones that came before it.

Maybe I’m cheating a bit here, but Casino Royale is a prequel in a way.

I would argue that Godfather part 2 is the superior movie, and it is a prequel to the first one.

Also headcanon wise, Baby Driver is a prequel to both Drive and The Driver.

Ahh screw it. Let’s just have fun. Always thought the character of Brill played by Gene Hackman in Enemy of the State is supposed to be same guy in The Conversation, and why he is a bitter paranoid old man.

[–] TaygetaDuck@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

Definitely made the same connection you did with Gene Hackman from “The Converstion” and “Enemy of the State”

In my opinion, X-Men: First Class doesn't get enough credit as an absolutely stellar prequel. The franchise looked dead in the water after X-Men 3 and X-Men Origins: Wolverine. X-Men: First Class not only revitalized the franchise, but brought a sense of fun and color that the series had been devoid of previously. While Sir Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellen cannot be beat; James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender do phenomenal jobs with the roles, themselves.

I know many see X2 as the highpoint of the series (or maybe Days of Future Past), but for me it would likely be X-Men: First Class

I'd have to agree. I love Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen, but James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender bring great chemistry to the role.

No love for Better Call Saul?

[–] AJYoung@beehaw.org 2 points 1 year ago

How could I forget?!

[–] azureeight@beehaw.org 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm doing a run for the first time right now and I think I absolutely like it better than Breaking Bad! Not that Breaking Bad was bad, it's just Better Call Saul has such a great cast.

I was happy for so much more grumpy Mike.

I think BCS starts getting good sooner than BB did, which gives it an edge. But it's a different kind of good for the first few seasons — more boardrooms than bullets, at first.

I genuinely have a hard time deciding which is better, Breaking Bad or Better Call Saul. They're both so good.

Rogue One has been mentioned. Also Prey. Easily the best Predator movie since the first one.

[–] grady77@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

Yes and yes. Prey was so freaking cool. I wish it was longer!

[–] DreamyDolphin@kbin.social 7 points 1 year ago

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly is chronologically the first movie of Segrio Leone's "Dollars" trilogy even though it was the last one released.

Monsters University is good.

A fellow person of culture! Finally!

[–] AJYoung@beehaw.org 3 points 1 year ago

OH YEAH, they did a great job!

[–] LossLeader@lemmy.studio 6 points 1 year ago

Fire Walk With Me (Twin Peaks)

[–] neotecha@beehaw.org 6 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I had to look a list of prequels, since I was having trouble just remembering some.

  • Might not be the greatest, but I remember really liking Rouge One

  • Cruella was a blast, but I could see people arguing that the main character was a completely different person than who was in the 101 Dalmations

  • The Thing (2011) did a good job, with some criticisms (over use of CGI). It was never going to be as great as the original, but I still enjoyed it

[–] AJYoung@beehaw.org 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I watched the 2011 The Thing last night which sparked the conversation today!

[–] neotecha@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Haha, i guess that means you didn't care for it, if it sparked that particular conversation

[–] AJYoung@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I mean, it wasn't bad but also...not that great? Agh, I hate dishing on movies. They're so hard to make!

[–] neotecha@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Thinking about it, i think you're right.

It's been a while since I've seen it, but didn't it "okay things safe", just retread many of the same plot beats while making relatively superficial changes?

I totally get not wanting too critical on movies, especially when you're involved in the process yourself.

[–] AJYoung@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago

Absolutely! I enjoyed watching it, but was just disappointed they didn't do anything new with it.

I loved Cruella, but yeah, I wouldn't consider that a prequel.

[–] TaygetaDuck@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago (2 children)

“Prometheus” is an amazing prequel to the “Alien” franchise.

[–] AJYoung@beehaw.org 1 points 1 year ago

I enjoyed it a lot!

[–] grady77@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yeah I feel like it got a lot of hate when it came out because people didn’t get it. I really loved it, but then again I still like Alien 3 and Resurrection soooo…

[–] mcforest@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

For me it kinda de-mystifies the Alien. I just pretend it never existed to keep having fun with the first 4 films.

[–] Uninsured@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

So horror movies are already pretty tough, but I have to say, Annabelle Creations is definitely better than the original (if you're only counting Annabelle, and not the whole Conjuring/Annabelle universe deal).

[–] skellener@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

First half of The Godfather Part II

[–] sometimescarmen@beehaw.org 3 points 1 year ago

I wouldn't say it's better than the original, but the prequel to Silence of the Lambs called "Red Dragon" was very good IMO. 7.2 rating on IMDB, 7.4 audience score on Rotten Tomatoes suggests that it was fairly well received.

Certainly worth a watch if you enjoyed Silence of the Lambs. In comparison, the sequel to SotL, "Hannibal", was an abomination.

[–] Bishma@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago

How about a prequel series? If so Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp gets a nod.

[–] BurningnnTree@lemmy.one 3 points 1 year ago

I wasn't a huge fan of the movie X but I really liked Pearl. So that's probably my favorite prequel.

[–] Canadian_Cabinet@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 year ago (2 children)
[–] FiskFisk33@kbin.social 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm sorry to say, I disagree wholeheartedly

[–] Pietson@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

Yes! the hobbit book was the first so you can hardly call the movie a prequel. They just made the sequels first.

[–] mjhrrs@kbin.social 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I prefer the animated Hobbit movie from 1977

[–] jpj007@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Temple is Doom is technically a prequel to Raiders of the Lost Ark.

[–] mjhrrs@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

That always confused me as a kid.

[–] Lols@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

does terminator 2 count? it might not be that incredible of a film, but its so much better than the first that i still want to give it a shout

also, rogue one is still just the best star wars film thats come out since the originals, and might be better than the originals
