not sure if I'm even doing this right, but I'm trying to find more subscriptions. how do i search my own instance for communities to join? how do i look outside of my instance for communities to join? i feel like i knew how once, but now I'm lost.

i use jerboa, if that helps? TIA.

I'm sure someone will post the specifics of how to initiate a search and "link" your instances, I use a browser (mobile and PC) on the Lemmy site and click communities to see what's "connected/federated". In the interim as someone else also adjusting to the change, remember to give it time. Its a newer medium and most of us are just coming here flooding it. It will grow and improve and "connect".

I think we all have to get used to the withdrawal from being force fed SO much information and garbage that the fear of missing out and small quantities of content are creating cyclical anxiety. Am I doing this right? What am I missing? where is my content? Why is there not more content? Am I doing this right?...etc.

Good Luck, Welcome! and I'll save this message as well to come back and see if there has been a clear way described.

Go to the list of subscribed communities (the icon next to the home icon) then just type in any keywords into the search bar at the top. It should show you communities in other instances too.

You should also join New Communities

https://lemmy.world/c/newcommunities

!newcommunities@lemmy.world

(I am still new to linking to communities, so hope any of those links works.)

It's where people post about new communities they created. You might find some good niche stuff there.

You can go to browse.feddit.de and search for communities that way if you know what you're looking for in particular

Agree, browse.feddit.de is awesome. That should be a prominent link on the main interface of every instance server IMHO!

You can search for them, the search function will show all the communities in your instance and the federated instances.

What do you use? Mobile or app? I can't tell you how to search on mlem, but on browser on the sidebar from your instance, there'll be a magnifier glass icon. Once you click it, you can search a topic by all, or a specific instance. If you're just on Jerboa, on top of your communities tab, there's a search bar, just write what you want there, and it'll give all the matching results from every source available to you.

I find the process momuch more efficient on the browser, I have to say, it gives you a lot more info.
