To be clear, this creates a separate Pixelfed account, it just uses your Mastodon info for quick profile setup and authentication.

Oh, I was going to ask why does it need access to everything and not just email, and that's why.

Still a super neat feature.

[–] richt@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago

Exactly what I was going to ask :-)

[–] ren@lemmy.world 15 points 1 year ago (6 children)

not to be spicy, but... in all honesty, what's the difference between posting on Pixelfed or on Mastodon. Post image + caption. Same on both, except on Mastodon I can choose not to post an image. I know Pixelfed is image-first, but if your friends and followers are on Mastodon and see/like/reblog my photos there. why would one need/want a Pixelfed account to manage too?

Know what I mean? I'm just struggling to justify yet-another-social media account, especially as I wind down my time on IG.

[–] ttmrichter@lemmy.world 27 points 1 year ago

Mastodon has limits for number of pictures. Pixelfed has higher limits out of the box. Pixelfed has image filters available. Mastodon doesn't seem to. Pixelfed's UX is oriented toward picture management. Mastodon's is oriented toward the textual experience.

They're different products that happen to share a protocol.

Perhaps the restriction to always have an image is the main point. Threads also seem just like Instagram, but without the photos.

[–] ren@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

ironically, with the push for Threads, after the pressure to post Reels in the IG feed, people have been filling Threads with images again lol. It really feels like Threads will be the new IG feed at some point.

Yeah, I get the idea is to force an image, but I guess I've been struggling lately with why bother with that limitation? Not sure if I'm describing it well.

It's just a different front end, which is true for most of the fediverse. If you don't care for an Instagram like experience, just follow from mastodon.

[–] ren@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

for sure, just feels redundant in the year of our lord 2023 ;)

[–] breakfastmtn@geddit.social 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It's mostly just media first but there are a few features that don't federate. Portfolios and stories are exclusive to pixelfed. And even if you just want to scroll a bunch of photos there just isn't a better way. They have the best Fediverse app I've ever used and the experience is great because it was designed specifically for that purpose.

Not that there's anything wrong with not seeing the appeal. The best thing about the Fediverse is that you can just be wherever you want. So you can post on Mastodon and follow whoever you want on Pixelfed too without having to make another account.

[–] ren@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yeah, I'm not knocking pixelfed, love the platform and idea, just starting to feel redundant some to me. It's all good though, yo are right that you get the portfolio view and other features.

[–] breakfastmtn@geddit.social 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I think it just comes down to what you said: do you really want an experience like IG? If you're a hard no, it's probably not for you. I was kind of in the same place as you re: IG. Looking at my IG feed it's about 50% recommended and promoted. So half my feed is what Meta wants me to see. It sucks now and I was over it. But a version of that without ads or algorithms is honestly pretty great -- and I was skeptical of that until I tried it. I mean, IG has higher engagement than any network except TikTok, so it's a format that people seem to like. They just hate the Meta part :)

I don't think it takes away from Mastodon at all though. Like, I'm using Calckey which is very similar to Masto (and being renamed in literally 40 minutes) and it's not harming the community at all. I think Pixelfed will probably be the thing that makes people realize how powerful the Fediverse is. To most people, being able to communicate between, say, Masto and Misskey probably just seems like having different clients. But the idea that you could communicate with all of Facebook and Twitter from an IG account is kind of mindblowing.

[–] ren@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I have calckey too - super curious what the rebrand will be!

[–] breakfastmtn@geddit.social 2 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Me too! And stoked to see if they actually make calckey.social magically transform into whatever [newthing].social is!

[–] ren@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

totally, I like calckey - while it was a bit "too much" for my needs, I know many people who wanted the more rich-text (and rich interaction) version of microblogging. Will check in later to see how the transition went.

[–] notavote@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

And all of that is just an email, but different interface and a bit different rules will bring different people.

[–] pluja@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It's "sign up" not "sign in". It creates a separate account cloning all your Mastodon data (follows, profile pic, username...)

[–] heyfrancis@mastodon.social 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)
[–] Random_user@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I just went through it. He's correct. It still makes you create a separate account, it just copies some information from your mastodon account.

[–] heyfrancis@mastodon.social 1 points 1 year ago

how about this post from the dev planning to use same account for Mastoson and pixelfed?

The post ~~is still~~ was broken for Lemmy fyi

[–] heyfrancis@mastodon.social 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

thanks for letting me know. looks like lemmy is trying to add [https://lemmy.world/post](https://lemmy.world/post`) in front of the URL so it doesn't load well

@burgersc12

[–] burgersc12@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Looks like it works now? It was a big gray box before on Connect, but now I can see it

[–] heyfrancis@mastodon.social 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

i edited post to remove it, but here is the markdown

image

does it load the picture on your app?

@burgersc12

[–] burgersc12@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

This is super broken on Connect. Lemmy site shows the text but not the link.

Btw i think your markdown should be ![image](link) on lemmy but yours looks like ![image]([link](link))

[–] heyfrancis@mastodon.social 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

ok i think this is only an issue when the post or reply is coming from Mastodon

i have a test account in lemmy and markdown is working as expected

@burgersc12

[–] burgersc12@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

No idea, but its taking up like 100x the space of a normal picture haha

It looks alright to me. For reference, my instance is lemmy.thesanewriter.com and my app is Thunder.

[–] burgersc12@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 year ago

They just fixed it about a minute after my comment :)

[–] aloeha@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I already signed up for both Pixelfed and Mastodon, is there a way to connect the two accounts? I guess I'm OK with abandoning my old Pixelfed account because I think I only have one or two posts on it.

[–] heyfrancis@mastodon.social 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

i'm not yet sure if merging 2 accounts is possible, probably not

@aloeha

[–] aloeha@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Oh well, thanks. If I use Mastodon to login with Pixelfed, do things I post on Mastodon get posted on Pixelfed too?

[–] heyfrancis@mastodon.social 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

i understand your point and i hope it works that way as this is fediverse, but they are 2 separate accounts like the previous commenter said - https://lemmy.world/comment/1464784
