General Discussion for politics in the UK.
Please don't post to both !uk_politics@feddit.uk and !unitedkingdom@feddit.uk .
Pick the most appropriate, and put it there.

Posts should be related to UK-centric politics, and should be either a link to a reputable news source for news, or a text post on this community.

Opinion pieces are also allowed, provided they are not misleading/misrepresented/drivel, and have proper sources.

If you think "reputable news source" needs some definition, by all means start a meta thread. (These things should be publicly discussed)

Posts should be manually submitted, not by bot. Link titles should not be editorialised.

Disappointing comments will generally be left to fester in ratio, outright horrible comments will be removed.
Message the mods if you feel something really should be removed, or if a user seems to have a pattern of awful comments.

!ukpolitics@lemm.ee appears to have vanished! We can still see cached content from this link, but goodbye I guess! :'(

Might as well have one of these to survey the chaos that is our political system.
Taking bets on what happens next in Boris vs Locked Phone.

I wish the Megathread well.

TBH my assumption is that they have access now. That story on Friday that Whitehall “may have found an old version of his PIN” is too weird. No IT department keeps PINs on record, “old version” makes no sense unless he’s been setting his PIN to $current_year. I do wonder if GCHQ has done the job and attempts are being made to spread enough FUD to avoid any press about how GCHQ can get into personal phones.

More likely a deal has been done and the pin was the price.

I'm betting Sunak stands to lose from the early messages in the pandemic

I think they were hoping to bury it under the BBC presenter story.

That seems to have moved along fairly briskly; and seems to have been weird throughout.

You may have called it

In case anyone is interested, Channel 4 had a short segment on the news today saying the enquiry has received access to all relevant messages from Johnson's phone, so I guess we can finally move on from that farce.

Well that was certainly quiet!

Does anyone have an idea what time we can expect the by-election results?

[–] Noit@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago

Some time on the morning of the 21st. They’ll be counting through the night, but it won’t be like a general election where results will pour in through the night. They may be done in the time for the morning news, but there’s no guarantees.

There's the locked phone, which intrigues me not going to lie, but then there's also the ongoing NHS strike action (and odd silence around it) - Monday, Thursday and Friday are all impacted this week.

[–] Noit@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago

It’s not odd really, strikes basically never get top billing on the news. If you scroll down past the key digital real estate you’ll generally find something on them. I don’t think that’s a good thing, but it is expected.

Friday will be by-election coverage which will likely take up the whole weekend.

Any idle speculation on the potential cabinet reshuffle rumoured to be planned for after the by-elections?

I reckon this might finally be the time Sunak gets shot of Braverman. Maybe Coffey as well. Tommy Tugs will be the new defence sec.
