Comic Books

A place to discuss comic books of all types, from old to new, Big 2 to indie, and everything in between.

Floppies, graphic novels, compilations, omnibusses (omnibusi?) are all fair game.

There is only one rule:*

Comic Books is a no judgement zone.

You can talk all you want about how Rob Liefeld is trash, Bob Kane is an asshole, or Frank Miller and Dave Sim’s politics have made them toxic, that’s all good.

If, however, another user is LEGITIMATELY a fan of something you don’t like, that does NOT make them a lesser person. Attack the art for being bad, not the person for being a fan of bad art.

* I lied. There are TWO rules... No piracy. Cover shots? That's good. Interior pages, in moderation? Sure. Full books? Links to pirate sites? That's how we get things shut down. :(

I'm not saying it's been a problem, because it hasn't been.

I’ve been using an old iPad for reading comics but the screen size is just a tiny bit too small. The iPad Pro with a bigger screen is completely out of my price range.

Any devices that has a decent screen size and are affordable (in the EU)?

What are everyone else using?

I don't know what's "affordable" in the EU, but I use an older Samsung Galaxy Tab A, which has 8" (20cm) and 10" (25cm) variants.

Those are actually pretty nice priced used. Looks like a used 10” model is about $125.

Amazon Fire tablets have a decent screen. Can't say much for the ecosystem or the app store, but if you're mainly using it for comics, it's workable.

How about you take a look at the used market? Places like FB marketplace, flea markets, recycling centers. You can often find stuff for cheap there.

Unfortunately that’s a dead end here. FB is overpriced and everyone wants full price for their used things. Ive tried a bunch of flea markets recently but it’s never electronics and recycling centers here aren’t allowed to sell or give away old devices.

I would go with a used device if I knew what model to aim for.

I mean, why aim for a specific model at all? Just look at the options available to you and pick the one that best meets your requirements.

Also, where in the EU are you that your recycling centers aren't allowed to sell electronics? I'm in Finland and they are allowed to sell old laptops etc. after they have been purged of the old users content afaik.

I'm in Denmark, where recycling centers unfortunately are kind of closed off with no selling.

I mainly want to hear what others use instead of just getting something random.

What are your specs and budget? 10" or more?

[–] drudoo@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Probably €125-150 with a 11-12” screen. My old iPad was 10” iirc.

I use the Fire HD 10 for reading comics. Very good screen for the price. The HD 11 Max just launched also.

If you check out TechTablets on youtube, he reviews some budget China tablets. He says the Teclast ones are decent.

Have you discovered the wonders of the Tachiyomi app on Android? ;-)

Stick with the IPad, the apps are better the screens are better. Even something a few years old will be better than any google tablet (even if just due to apps being tablet optimised).
