I used to worry about us over here in the UK being judged badly over Brexit, but you guys have, er, trumped us. This is fun to watch from 5000 miles away, but I'd hate to be there.

I used to have a Swedish running partner (doing postdoc in California). We'd argue about who had the 'least well-informed' voters (not the specific word we used). He claimed Sweden, I claimed US. He was disabusing me of the impression that all Swedes were knowledgable and cosmopolitan. Ongoing friendly argument -- until McCain picked Palin as his VP candidate. I sent him a text: 'I win.'

Didn't he say that he was going to be arrested once before but it turned out to be a lie? Has this been confirmed yet?

He was indicted and arrested in New York in early April, those charges are for falsifying business records relating to the hush money paid to Stormy Daniels. He lied about the day, but it happened a few days or a week after he said it would. The arrest process was that he showed up at court, pleaded not guilty, and was then released to await trial. No handcuffs, perp walk, or time spent in jail. That trial is scheduled to begin on March 25, 2024.

So far we have Trump plus "sources say" Trump has been indicted over the Mar-a-Lago documents in the news reports, but no officials have put out a statement yet that I have seen.

Oh man I’ve been edging for years I’m so close

[–] Bumblefumble@beehaw.org 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Give me that sweet release.

[–] DJDarren@beehaw.org 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It'll be like Niagara Falls when it finally comes.

[–] Anissem@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 year ago

It was a spooky ghost!

I just hope this recording and any other proof they have are made public. Without that, he can continue calling this whole thing a witch-hunt.

[–] nulluser@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

That's not going to stop him from calling it a witch hunt. The whole of humanity could witness his crimes with their own eyes and he would still claim he's being persecuted.

[–] feetongrass@beehaw.org 2 points 1 year ago

That is true, but it would give the others in the party an out from having to support him in fear of his base.

Just a bit more now I just need the perp walk and I can go peacefully into the night.

[–] Valliac@beehaw.org 2 points 1 year ago

I'd love to see him hauled out in cuffs. Would just be icing on the cake.

We've been hearing stuff like this forever now. I'll wait for him to actually be convicted.

[–] aster@beehaw.org 4 points 1 year ago

But we haven't, this is only the second time hes been indicted and these are federal charges. This is a first time in history that a former president has been federally indicted. It's quite a big deal over just investigations.

[–] Geometric7792@kbin.social 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I can't be excited about consequences until there's a conviction

[–] balerion@beehaw.org 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Even then, I expect him to get a slap on the wrist.

[–] CannaVet@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

I expect even in the best case of him actually eating shit and going to prison in any useful capacity, we'll get a Democrat rollover and Biden will pardon him "to heal the nation" or some such feel good garbage statement in an attempt to placate the terrorist party that has only ever taken inches and ran for multiple miles.

[–] Rocket@beehaw.org 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

What does this mean for his presidential candidacy? Can he still run?

[–] Afkargh@beehaw.org 4 points 1 year ago

Oddly enough, he can run. But as far as I know, he would be ineligible to vote.
