A place to politely discuss the tools, technique and culture of photography.

This is not a good place to simply share cool photos/videos or promote your own work and projects, but rather a place to discuss photography as an art and post things that would be of interest to other photographers.

My wife is a beginner photographer and needs a new laptop for her needs. What it would be the best laptop computer to suit photo editing for beginners?

your best bet is going to be a MacBook with apple silicon in it. 16 gigs of ram is a really great idea as well.

What’s your budget? Is she interested in video work too?

I’d say on the low end go macbook air m2 the little one but with at least 512gb storage and if she plans to work on video too macbook pro m1 pro with 1tb ssd, 16gb ram … both are less than $1500 if you look well enough for deals.

Just don’t go windows UNLESS she hates macs, for the price, macs last many more years for professional photo work, also less bugs in adobe software.

You need a color-correct and sharp display, Macbooks are good in this aspect

The new MacBook Pro m3 max will grow with her for years to come. If not that, a MacBook Pro with m2 would be a great option too. I’ve got the m3 max and connect it to my display when I’m home. It’s an incredible setup.

I need a Windows machine and am very satisfied with my Dell XPS 15 laptop for LR and PS. This is my second one. My wife has Mac and likes that for her photography work, and we have no problem sharing resources in out studio. I also have a custom build desktop for photography that cost less than the laptop, and is also Windows.

If it’s a laptop- a MacBook is the way to go. Make sure there’s at least 16gb ram.

Apple MacBook, make sure it has the M1 or later processor though. I have one and it's great for video editing also if she looks into that also.

I have a MacBook Air m2 13” and does the work completely fine for the basics. Should go for pro if also doing video editing.

I'd go Asus pro art laptops.

I think the Dell XPS laptop with FHD will be great if you’re looking for a windows laptop. You have to make sure the monitor option you order is with FHD. Core i7 and at least 16GB RAM and a good size drive. I think by the time you factor in the display cost, ram and drive, you’re already in a MacBook Pro territory.

"Best" is probably a Mac Studio with two 27" displays. Or three.

A MacBook Pro would do the job, as well. Though I don't see how people can work on such a tiny display.

You can connect to multiple displays with a single cable.

No, with 2x Pro Display XDR

Wife just starting out a new hobby? Better spend a few thousand on a laptop to see if she likes her new hobby.
