Not PL related directly, but the rules about handballs are really weird in CL. How do they give THAT as a penalty against Livramento. It came off his f***ing chest for God's sake. Feel really sorry for him. I just feel it's going to get even worse for defending teams once Wenger's new offside law comes into the picture.

To paraphrase Newcastle fans after the Arsenal game a few weeks ago...

"You win some you lose some. One things for sure, you won't hear Newcastle fans complaining like the Arsenal fans are now, when a decision goes against them. Just part of the game"

[–] Sir-Turd-Ferguson@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

They will be the ones getting these calls in epl..

For uefa, they do want to upset their overlord

[–] shaved_gibbon@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Exactly. You don’t hear Newcastle fans acting like little bitches. Some are rightfully saying it was the wrong decision. Which it clearly was. Thanks for pointing that out mate.

[–] ret990@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

What you bitching for then

[–] jsf1982@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Penalty all day long stop moaning

[–] BrownEyesWhiteScarf@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

What comes up must come down, I guess

[–] MapNo3870@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

100% penalty

[–] zimbo25690@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Referee screwed up big time. That ball would only not touch his arm if he was an amputee in that situation. Ridiculous

[–] ailcnarf@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

I really wish the refs were mic'd up like rugby so we knew how he came to that decision.

No doubt id still be annoyed but it's be nice to see the thought process.

[–] Sir-Turd-Ferguson@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

“Good process boys”

Feel any better? Yeah.. I didn’t either

[–] herkalurk@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago (4 children)

I'm watching the CBS post match show and the Referee rules expert is saying the IFAB rules don't account for the deflection any longer. So the fact it comes off his chest first doesn't matter.

[–] Ambitious-Win-9408@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Rules as they are it's clear as day that's no handball. Any decent ref should be able to give that.

Stinks of ucl drama conjuring, no way on earth it's a pen and that's from a liverpool fan.

To provide a further unbiased perspective, it's almost as daft as the pen given to us against Tottenham in the CL final. It's bullshit.

[–] EldritchHorrorBarbie@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

The constant changing of the rules and lack of consistency is something I really hate. I don’t even attempt to keep up now but it means fans and pundits are fighting an uphill battle every step of the way.

[–] Ceejayncl@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Actually, UEFA’s rules for this season actually clarify that it’s not a penalty if it comes off another part of the player.

[–] dolphin37@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

It doesn’t matter if they do or not. The IFAB rules state it is only a hand ball if the players arm has made their body unnaturally bigger. This means to justify this penalty the referee has to be saying that Tino’s arm movement is clearly and obviously (VAR) not justified by the fact he is running. So the way his arm is has to not be considered a natural way to run. Which begs the question, how the fuck should a player run?

[–] Opposite-Mediocre@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

It's annoying when Refs let you down...

[–] Moist-Ad-9088@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

First time watching a european match eh?

[–] PatRice4Evra@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Rival fans don't watch our matches. We've conceded a penalty in every single CL match this season and 3 of them were bs handballs like tonight.

[–] Moist-Ad-9088@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Media only like reporting united in crisis.. according to Matt smith anyways!

[–] Dotheysellpizza@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

What we need to do then is sew the arms, into the top. That’s the only way to stop these ridiculous handballs as the refs and association are clearly ill equipped to deal with this

[–] ImpossibleLeave5@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

It sucks when every game is decided by weak fouls.

[–] somethingdarkside45@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Hurts doesn't it.

[–] HakuChikara83@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

It’s fucking bullshit! I’m not a Newcastle fan and don’t care what the result was but that decision was ridiculous. Same as the Fulham game last night and so many decisions this season in the Prem as well as Europe. it’s becoming unbearable. I hate it and it’s putting me off watching football

[–] Deepthroat699@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Respect the ref’s decision and move on

[–] kwakwaktok@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Did anyone catch that clown on BT Sport commentating? Said something along the lines of "under Howard Webb's directive, a penalty like that would never be given in the premier league". As if the pl isn't littered with even dumber mistakes.

[–] RunningRebles@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Why are you posting this here? There’re different subs for a reason mate!

[–] jduboly@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Yup, Tino’s fault. He grew arms.

[–] mikbeeb@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

I'm a Geordie Gunner with primarily Newcastle supporting mates. I like to see the North East teams do well outside of Arsenal. This was so conflicting for me haha.

[–] StellarAoMing@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

As Newcastle fan, i don't feel aggrieved one bit. Here's why:

  1. It's group of death. It was expected to be difficult. We smashed them at SJP and like it or not, PSG was expected to win the group. As things stand now, they have to beat Dortmund away to surely progress, which I doubt Dortmund will particularly like considering that will drop them to 2nd position.

  2. We still have good chance to go thru and can guarantee EL with a win over Milan. It will be tricky, but we can do it. If we win and PSG doesn't, we'll go thru in CL! Check out our lineup, not so long ago some of these players were relegation fodder! We weren't even expected to come out of this group given how inexperienced our players are on European stage, we were in 4th pot for the draw, so to be in position where we can still advance is amazing!

  3. Let's put ourselves in PSG position. They were expected to win the group or at least qualify with ease. If this penalty was not given for us as underdogs at SJP, we would be mad.

So, it was really unlucky for Tino, but these things sometimes happen. Ball did hit his elbow, there's no doubt about it. With deflections now not being counted, it's refs decision to give a penalty. Fine. We'll learn and next season maybe be in 3rd pot, step by step we'll get there.

P.s.

We should've played better, but can't be unhappy, with injuries we have it's still amazing result and we're still in with a chance.

Honestly at this point, you might as well aim for an arm rather than the goal

[–] Whenwillwerealize@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

It really looks like dembele does

[–] cycling_rat@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Yeah it seems like that’s what psg were trying for

[–] Gold-Check-9518@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago (2 children)

I am convinced that was Sadio Mane’s intention the UCL final against Tottenham 😂

[–] stroopthereitis@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

This came immediately to mind

[–] taylorstillsays@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

At least that makes sense when the defender leaves their arm in such an exposed and forced position.

[–] dolphin37@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

I would say that’s exactly what Dembele did, but it’s just as likely his atrocious crossing ability is at fault

[–] Temporary-Currency-4@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

TRUE and it's little wonder that players race after the ref after every ACCIDENTAL handball. Next it'll be sin bins to prevent players exploiting refs and VAR's inability to distinguish ACCIDENTAL from intentional handball, Level from Offside, and protecting the ball from deliberate attempts to hurt players. Have any of them ever actually PLAYED football ? VAR and officiating in general is a complete disaster now which is killing football.

[–] akunv@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Don’t remember this outrage from you boys when they robbed Arsenal. Karmas a bitch👍🏽

[–] MrShelby1234@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

I agree it ain't a pen but Newcastle deserve it. Their owners have been paying for decisions since they took over

[–] Ok-Dish-4584@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

It was the same argument with the old rules were if the ball touched the hand it was a penalty.People are going to complain about it until football dies

[–] DustyBlackmon@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

That’s what happens when you park the bus away with one goal.

[–] Jackbees777@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Yeh was wrong but I also remember Newcastles 1-0 win from that Gordon dive so I immediately respectfully was like fair enough

[–] azzhasjoined@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Mannn fuck this shit honestly. One of my mates whos a manu fan also thought that it was NOT A PEN. Even my other mates who are all mostly all barca or real fan also thought that it was NOT A PEN.

[–] AkilleezBomb@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Kind of funny how petty Arsenal fans are in this thread. Rather than wanting to see rules be written clearly and implemented correctly after being wronged themselves, they just want to see everyone suffer from the same shit refereeing.

No wonder nothing will ever be done about the state of refereeing when people just celebrate shit decisions because their club either wasn’t involved or they copped a bad decision weeks prior.

[–] carlden3@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Now, I don’t know wether i agree with the referees decision or not altough I’m gonna play devils lawyer.

Firstly, just because the ball bounces of your chest doesn’t give you a “free pass” to touch it with the arms. As an exaggerated example, you can’t just punch the ball if you hit it with the chest first. Therefore, when the ball bounces of your chest and hits your arm it is a concrete decision wether or not the arm was in an unnatural position.

Secondly, his arm was flying. Wether or not he had the intent to hit the ball with his arm (which he definitely didn’t) his arm still had no reason to be so high up, especially because he was in the box. His arm shouldn’t have been raised to shoulder level as that MIGHT deflect a goal scoring opportunity. Because of that it is deemed a penalty when he eventually it the ball with his elbow and totally changed PSG’s opportunity.

That’s how I view it, although as stated, I havn’t thought through wether I agree with the decision or not.

[–] theterr0r@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

It does. It's literary in the rules.

[–] Meth_Hardy@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Sucks when VAR fucks you over with an awful decision.

Oh, well.

[–] Loxnaka@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

people wont see it because theres more league matches so more incidents but uefa reffing is so much worse than pl in nearly every way. its consistently abysmal.

[–] Martinifc@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

This might be an unpopular opinion but new handball rules (alongside next years champions league format and even FFP if we wanna go that far) are all designed to favour the biggest teams. UEFA don’t want a competitive competition, they want one they can manage.

Generally speaking, better teams attack more, have more touches in opposition box and therefore earn more penalties. Extend this to the new interpretation of handball in UCL and I don’t see how this doesn’t favour the best teams. I’m sure UEFA much prefer when the big teams make it through to the knockouts every year to help keep money flowing.

Or maybe there’s no ulterior motive…but I’m struggling to come up with a reason for the change.
