I don’t have much faith left in Todd

[–] ieightpi@lemmy.world -3 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

Is this because of just Starfield? Fallout 76 was messy at release but the core concept is novel and most people are praising that game.

Starfield was an anomaly. Sometimes when you spend too much time on a project, you bog it down. Todd spend way too much time on his baby and made it a mess. That isn't inherent to Bethesda.

Will it require mods to be enjoyable?

I'm going full Luck build. Fuck it.

Dramatic and dark

Aaaaand I already hate it. Fallout at its best never took itself seriously or tried to be overly dramatic. Nobody's even seen the show but I can already tell you it should be a dark comedy and nothing else.

[–] ieightpi@lemmy.world 1 points 9 months ago

Before you make that assessment you should look into Walton Goggins in justified or Gemstones. Both with dark humoer.

Also Todd finished that statement about dramatic and dark "with a wink".

He's insinuating upbeat elements. From my perspective, Todd describes Falloir perfectly in his quote. That "wink" is what you are looking for.

With the production team, it'll look pretty at least. I don't have high hopes for the writing though.

Why is writing so hard to get right in Hollywood? They always screw it up.

[–] chakan2@lemmy.world 11 points 9 months ago (1 children)

The article said it's dark with a wink...

Guys? Did you actually play the game? The whole thing is satire...it's not a wink.

I have a bad feeling they're going to try to do The Last of Us in pastel colors.

[–] otter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 9 months ago

You mean photo filtered, not pastel. Desaturated, dingy shadows, buttery highlights, diffuse or granular textures, etc.

Wait till AI gets involved. It'll be trained on all this garbage to extract maximum binge watching.

Because writers don't have creative freedom, instead they are forced to push an agenda.

Looks cool. I'm most concerned about the tone of the show; the games are filled with absurd, exaggerated, and cartoonish elements that work well in that medium, but might come across as unbearably cheesy in live action.

No reason not to give it a shot though. 🤞

I am an acquaintance of the set designer and saw some sets awhile back. It looks pretty fantastic in terms of art direction. I think it they're gunning for Last Of Us -level quality. Hope it turns out.

Anything Todd praises is the reason to skip it in my opinion.

Can't agree with you. it seems like the hate towards Howard is only new because Starfield wasn't great. But before that people have been pretty happy with Bethesda. Having Todd happy with what he sees means it's likely going to be faithful to the source material.

Plus Johnathan Nolan is a great writer and director. He's touched a lot of projects that have been hits.

[–] A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago

You obviously havent been paying attention for very long if you think distrust and dislike of Todd Howard is because Starfield.

[–] MeanEYE@lemmy.world 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Naah, I remember when Todd ruined Fallout3 for me and when he lied about 200 endings. There are many occasions when he said one thing and did the other. I also remember when they didn't want to pay Obsidian bonuses because Fallout: New Vegas didn't have certain meta-critic score, game which most people still consider best Bethesda published Fallout. They pretty much ruined the whole franchise for me by switching from RPG to whatever it is today, action bullshit linear story with poor gun mechanics. Todd is not a good game director and even worse PR guy. They should use their empire and just STFU and publish games, let the development go to someone else.

I can't comment on Skyrim and other titles, since I have never played them. Some love them others hate them, but I will refrain from commenting on those.

As far as Johnathan is concerned, that might be the case. But many great stories have been ruined by shitty directors, just look at anything Netflix touches.

[–] ieightpi@lemmy.world -1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Huh I never realized Todd Howard was like that. But I strongly disagree that Fallout 3 sucked. But if your comparing what Fallout is today compared to the original two, then I see why your salty.

Anyway I still stink that Bethesda's track records is above average. And I have faith in Johnathan Nolan with that Amazon momey. Todd as an executive is fine as his hands aren't on the reigns.

[–] A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 1 points 9 months ago

Theres a reason why I have reinstalled New Vegas and played it to completion a thousand times, but I've never reinstalled Fallout 3.

Bethesdas record is only above average due to mods. Remove mods from the equation and Bethesda wouldnt even exist as a company anymore.

[–] A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 4 points 9 months ago (1 children)

The only interest I have in this is to see how butchered and terrible it is.

I dont hope for that, I just expect it.

[–] DannyMac@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago

Hey I had zero expectations from the Twisted Metal series and ended up loving it! It had no business being as good as it was! So, maybe there's hope.

[–] MeanEYE@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago

It will have 200 endings! Says Todd Howard.

Obligatory song: Todd Howard - It just works.

[–] RizzRustbolt@lemmy.world 1 points 9 months ago

Why would they make another series? The first one was perfect.
