I always somehow find my way back to playing No Man's Sky. No matter what I do, game I play, activity inside or outside of gaming, NMS is always there to play and chill. Sometimes I go on creative and spend a week amassing the perfect color coordinated team of ships, crew, frigates, and freighter.

That and every content update we get for free!

Super Mario World. I’ll play it on switch and sometimes on SNES, either way, it’s my favorite game of all time.

[–] franktato@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

For me, it's both the subnautica games.

Metroid Dread, I could replay it forever. I've basically memorized the location of every item.

Perfect game? Far from it. I always go back to Everquest, be it TLP servers, sometimes later live servers or the classic private servers like P99 and now Project Quarm.

Borderlands 2. It nailed the loot system. Farming feels so good, it’s the perfect balance of time input to reward output. The game is incredibly fun to optimize your play.

The difficulty also hits a sweet spot. It’s basically perfectly balanced. Even though the game is loot based the end game difficulty is still 95% skill based. It asks you to use the game mechanics to their fullest and if you do that you can make any gear work. It is completely relevant to your skill at the game though.

After 4,000+ hours I still find new stuff to do, and even though the game is 11+ years old new things are still being learned and strategies are still being developed by the community.

Risk of Rain 2. No matter how many times I blow up a screen of enemies simply by existing, it DOES NOT get old.

Skyrim

Just reinvent todds sandbox with a new slab of mods.

Back in the day i would have said Warcraft 3 custom maps.

Im a sucker for customizing a familiar gameplay loop to my current desires. Not many games were as transformative as these 2

XCOM2 I got it for free on PlayStation years ago and regularly throw back it on when I'm between games. Still need to get on PC and try Longwar

Everyone got an upvote for playing.

It’s Skyrim for me. I’ve started that game more times than I can count.

Stellaris and Enter the Gungeon are the ones I just can’t stop playing. Over 1k hrs in each according to Steam.

Heat Signature. Top down stealth shooter but gameplay's more puzzle. With some rouge-lite stuff going on. I keep coming back because it's so pick-upable. There's absolutely nothing between "start new game" and picking your mission. Nothing at all to disrupt your gameplay for a scene you've seen 10 times before etc, just you and a nebula full of fantastic emergent gameplay.

You migh get a mission where you need to assassinate a dude, for example. Maybe you bring your assault rifle and execute everyone with impunity. Maybe you stealth through with a wrench, clubbing fools down before murdering your target. Maybe you bring a cloaking device and sneak through the ship, leaving no sign, 'till you deploy a trap that will teleport your target into space. Maybe you steal his whole ship and turn him over for the client to deal with. Maybe you steal a completely different ship and fire into your target's ship 'till he's killed.

Love it.

Absolutely not No Man's Sky for me 😅

Probably would say Resident Evil 4. One of the best action/survival horror games I've ever played. The remake or the original.

[–] ForcefulOne@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Rocket League!

4D race car soccer (with foosball and billiards mixed in)

I've been playing that game just about every day for years.

[–] Paraffin_puppies@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

For the last few years it’s been Brigador. The combat sandbox is varied enough to keep things interesting and the skill ceiling is high enough that I still feel that I’m getting better at the game hundreds of hours in.

Path of exile has me hooked for the last decade. Longer actually.

No other game comes close, though the seasonal cadence gives me plenty of time to play other stuff on the tail ends

I immediately uninstall the perfect games before it suffers the same fate as new songs that you put on repeat and get bored of.

At any time there is usually 1 multiplayer shooter that I pick up and play for years. Right now that is Black Ops: Cold War.
