I am getting more into sleep health and want to better understand my sleep habits so I have been looking at the Apple Watch.

If I spend the money on an Apple Watch I want to also be able to use it all day but I am realistic in that I know it has to be charged too.

I am leaning towards the series 9 but see that it is good for about 18 hours and then needs about 1.5 to get a full charge.

What are your routines to use your watch all day but also be able to get good sleep data?

TIA

Apple Watch by day Joe Rogan podcast by night. All day!

I have the 8. I throw it on the charger when I wake up. I charge it for ~20-30 mins and grab it on my way out the door. This routine has held up so far for me.

Every few days I have to top it off after work. I think it’s probably on days when I have to scramble out the door and it gets less morning charge time.

I have the Ultra 1. I charge it for 20 to 30 minutes a night while I shower. This is almost always enough to get it to 100%. I charge it for maybe 45 minutes if I’ve had an especially active day.

I use about 5% to 10% of my battery for 7 to 8 hours of sleep with Sleep Focus on.

I exercise daily for a minimum of an hour (Exercise mode on).

I have Rise to Wake but do not use Always On.

I end my day (next shower / charge) with between 33% and 25% of my battery used. If I’m going on an overnight trip, I don’t even need to bring my charger. I don’t think I’ve ever used even 50% of my battery in 24 hours and that includes days I’ve been very active and tracked 3-5 hours of exercise.

With my Series 8, I would charge up fully before bed, then put it on the charger while getting ready in the morning, where it would usually hit about 95% charge.

Wear it all day at work (8:30 - 4:30), and getting home in the evening, it would usually be at anywhere from 65-75%.

Just bought the Ultra 2, and don’t have to worry about that anymore. I’ve been able to wear it pretty much a day and a half without charging it at all, and it’s still at around 35-40%. Very happy I decided to get the Ultra.

I use it for tracking sleep, going to the gym, and even approving 2FA requests at work. It’s been a lot more versatile than I thought when I initially bought it.

I bough the Ultra 2 just for this reason. It goes just about 3.5 days. I last charged it in Friday at 3pm and I just charged it for the first time since then. It tracks my sleep every night. I use the Auto Sleep app.

They suck for sleep tracking.

Get a Garmin if all you care about is battery life and don’t kind an inferior wrist based heart rate monitor.

Charge it while on the throne in the am and then while in the shower after working out.

[–] imevannn@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

I still have a 7, apparently battery life is just getting better and I charge mine every other night. I get two full days and two nights before charging. Ymmv

Just charge at the evening works with my S6 with 80%

All day and overnight? Will this include interacting with the Watch as well, or just looking at it?

[–] JMarkyBB@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

All day, all night and the next day till tea time, I'm walking 6 miles a day. Allways On Display is turned off, Screen Brightness at it lowest, Wake Duration is 15 Seconds, and I'm running a monotone (Black & White) theme. And I'm interacting with it when I need to.

I will be honest here and I might get downvoted to oblivion since this Apple Watch group. I used a Huawei band that is like $20 only then after that, a Huawei smart watch. Very straightforward, just wear and it will automatically track your sleep, Awake, Light, REM, Deep, etc. No complications! The battery lasts for more than 5 days. I recently upgraded to AW thinking that it could be better but to be honest, it's just basically the same. The Huawei has blood oxygen monitor too but my SE which is a bit more expensive than the Huawei doesn't. Going back to sleep monitoring, I found the Apple sleep monitoring too complicated, maybe because I came from something that doesn't require something like setting bedtime, sleep focus, and I even ended up getting a 3rd party app so I can track my naps. If you need sleep monitoring, maybe you need to look somewhere else. I am not saying Huawei because if you are in the US, then you might not have it but there are better sleep tracking watch out there for sure. I know some folks here are recommending Ultra but I don't see the point of spending almost a thousand dollars just to get extra days of battery life so you can track your sleep.

I wear my ultra all day and charge it when in the tub or shower so I can wear it at night for sleep tracking. Seems to work well for me as it has never died on my wrist.

[–] haydar_ai@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

I charge it when showering, preparing to go to bed, and during working hours when I know I won't get up for at least 30 minutes.

then needs about 1.5 to get a full charge.

That's the neat part, you don't have to full charge it. The recent watches since Series 7 has this quick charge and you should be able to charge it to 80-90% quickly. So the idea is basically to shortly top it up but often.

No offense, but I don’t believe people saying they get two days out of the normal Apple Watch. Maybe if you have the display off and never look at it. What’s the point of having it then? Also, every battery gets worse over time. So if you maybe get a full day and night out of it now, that might not be the case in a few months.

I’d say, get the watch you want and incorporate charging times into your daily routine

Well, here is proof that I'm getting 2 days out of my Apple Watch S9. I'm walking 6 miles a day.

[–] G45X@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

I just got a series 9 last week and I turned off the always on display. My battery probably lasts around 1.5, maybe 2, days. I usually charge it every day though for about 30 minutes. I use it for sleep tracking and workouts.

[–] LeatherAndChai@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

I have Series 7. I charge it once day at morning while I am getting ready for the day. This also includes a workout session and sleep tracking.

[–] Real_Establishment56@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

I have a 6 with about 85% battery life left. I wear it all day, and leave it in the charger an hour before I go to bed, then wear it at night.

In the 2 years I’ve been doing this I’ve had maybe 3 times where the watch didn’t make it till the end of the day. Most of the times because I had used it for navigation, or some background process had been eating my battery.

[–] MyppNN@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

I have the SE 2020, lasts almost 2 days usually. I charge it while I’m in the shower and it’s more than enough (I take quite long to shower though).

[–] fkkm@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

If you want to track your sleep I recommend Oura ring. I also have both watch & ring. Apple watch doesn't come close to the insight/accuracy Oura ring app gives

[–] not_some_username@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

I Just bought the SE2 waiting for watch X for that

[–] jonnyinexile@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

I am still rocking a Series 4. I wear it all day. It charges for about 20 minutes before bed. Put it on for sleep tracking, charge it the next day while I’m in the shower.

[–] the_kid1234@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Extremely happy with the Ultra for this use case.

It charges so ridiculously fast compared to my previous S3. Right now it’s 7am, I have 49% remaining. My watch was last charged to 93% Sunday night at 10pm. If I work out today I’ll charge during my shower after, otherwise I’ll do a quick charge at night before sleeping, it’ll probably take 30 minutes while I’m getting ready for bed and stuff.

[–] Katttten@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

I charge my s7 fully up before bed, sleep with it on and use it all day, after 23h it goes back on the charger with around 30% left. No workouts or anything else like active use of cellular or any apps. So if you will use the watch more actively it might not be enough but for me it is great!

[–] SaschaStorm@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

I have the SE and can wear it for 2+ days without a proper charge if I just charge it when I shower in the evenings. :)

[–] Spencergrey2015@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

I have a series 9 that I use for all day and all night tracking. I charge it while I shower or while I’m making/eating breakfast

[–] joobino@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

I do 1 workout/day plus sleep monitoring, the watch lasts 1.5 days (s9) and I usually charge when it gets to 30%

[–] glytxh@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

S6 gives me 30 hours

Charged 60-90 minutes per day. Usually lives around 20-80% never hits zero, seldom hits 100%

Used for daily workouts for maybe an hour, sleep tracking, and basic tasks. Often used to pay for things, find quick directions, or do maths.

If my s6 with 94% battery life remaining can do this comfortably, basically any ‘current’ watch will be more than capable.

That 30 hour lifespan really is that sweet sport for daily use without having to think too hard about it.

[–] accordingtoame@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

I charge mine about an hour before bedtime, when I am eating a snack, then put it on right before bed. Usually it's around 20% by the time I charge it every night.

[–] CharmanderCHARRRRRRR@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

I have a series 7 (45m) that I use all day and for sleep tracking. I start my day at ~5am and by 8pm its still at ~40%. I do a quick 10-20min charge while I shower and the battery usually shoots back up to 100%. (in the mornings the battery is at 95% after I get up)

Just to give more detail on how the watch is used.
- morning workout
- notifications during work
- recording the miles i walk the dog
- apple pay throughout the day

Settings:
- AOD off
- LTE on

[–] causal_friday@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

I have the Ultra 2. I just charge it while I'm showering every day. Sometimes I'm slow and I get to 100%, other times only 90%. When I wake up in the morning, I always have more than 70% left.

I don't have any particular power savings enabled. I have the always-on display turned on, and keep the watch "alive" for 70s instead of 2s. I work out for about 45 minutes a day without any power-saving settings. I interact with the display somewhat regularly (always checking on my stand credit).

Basically, you will not have any battery life problems.

[–] lovebot5000@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

I have a series 8 and I charge it in the evenings when I put my kid to bed. Takes an hour or less.

[–] Soberspinner@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

My series 6 lasts about a day and a half with regular use + workouts

[–] 49thDipper@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

I bought an Ultra specifically for the longer battery life. Sleep tracking has helped me become a better sleeper.

[–] musingsandthesuch@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

I take off my watch to charge it and boom, it lasts when I need it to. Pretty wild how that happens.

[–] ari_wonders@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Bought an S9 on Black Friday after some time wearing Casios now I'm back. I also bought it for sleep tracking and regular use - I rarely do workouts, so I know that takes up a lot of battery life.

So far, it's lasted 2 days on one charge. I normally don't let it die completely, since I like to have enough juice to wear it at night. It's got raise to wake on and I've tried to turn off somethings that will drain the battery - if anyone has any tips on what drains, please help me here, sometimes I really don't know what to turn off, lol.

And it charges quite quick I think, about less than an hour it's good to go. Don't be fooled by the 'faster charge' on the 8 and 9 models. It's literally 15' faster on a charge than the regular one, it's really a joke, if you ask me. A 'faster charge' would be like 30 minutes vs an hour imo, but it is what it is.

Overall it's an all day watch really. Apple Pay is absolutely perfect and blazing fast, watch faces are great, all apps I need work perfectly well, the larger screen is great and the S9 is a good watch if you wanna track your sleep, since it's not uncomfortable to wear at night.
