I really miss chatrooms in general, and I thought we were due for a comeback for the year or two reddit was running them, what with the userbase they have.

Have you checked out matrix? Kbin chat is #kbin:matrix.org

the dev here is very busy as it is and I can't imagine chatrooms are a priority. though there's already federated chatroom options like matrix.

Could use the microblog section for a more public(?) version of that. idk I never used the chat

People used the Reddit chat?

I tried for a hot minute over COVID, and it was buggy as hell, but overall, a fun and active environment before they scrapped it.

Have you tried joining a discord server? That may be more of what you’re looking for.

I've been part of Discord for a long time, but it feels like there aren't many general chat options, they're all based around a thing I'm not familiar with and don't like. And then so many servers seem to be children.

Discord is a proprietary technology, which can go the way of Reddit at any moment. Discord 'servers' may feel like something self-hosted by the 'owners', but there are not much more independent from Discord as individual subreddits are from Reddit.

I doubt it, but you never know. The only time I used it was when r/freefolk were watching the last season of GoT live, and boy that final episode was fucking hilarious. There was nothing like watching a bunch of internet strangers come together and collectively lose their shit as our brains broke at the stupidity of the finale.

I'll say, those chatrooms really helped get me through 2020. I found them a couple months before COVID struck and the lockdown was a lot easier with the friends I made in those chatrooms. It's not something I think should be forced, but if it looks like the support is here, I'm making it known early on that I'm for it and would love it.
