The recent dock sharing post surprised me because of how many people had the Phone app in the dock.

I personally open it maybe once a month if I have to call a number I don’t have in my phone and if I call anyone I know it’s just through the Messages app since it’s all right there on the contact. Because of this I haven’t had the phone app on my dock for years.

Am I generally alone in this or were non Phone app users just not very present in that thread?

Nope, Bose connector because I switch a lot between three devices during the day, WhatsApp, Firefox, and Bitwarden for my passwords.

[–] vialenae@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Yes, almost daily. It’s phonebook and messages I barely use. They are still in my dock though.

[–] ActualExpert7584@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

iPhone 7 is slow enough you can’t search a contact with spotlight and it instantly comes up.

[–] Shoddy_Initiative_98@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I think it’s just the convenience for most of the people out there. Even tho a lot of us aren’t even using the phone for calling anymore.

[–] _PrincessOats@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (3 children)

Do I use it often? No.

But it lives first in the dock and always will. If I need to dial something quick I don’t want to be swiping through pages of apps to find it.

[–] swagglepuf@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

This is why spotlight search is your best friend.

[–] le_sacre@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Before today it never occurred to me, but now Phone is out of my dock and on my first page of Homescreen. So any time I want to open Phone I just swipe up to get to Homescreen and then if necessary swipe up one more time to jump directly to the first page. Same way I've always handled Mail, Calendar, and Clock (all of which I open way more frequently than Phone).

Only when I want to call somebody.

[–] totheogglo@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Yes, I keep the phone front and center on my phone 😂

It's not just calling someone imo because there's all the tabs. It's recent calls (which is a fast way to call ppl I usually talk to), keypad to dial new number, contacts, and voicemail...all at most 2 clicks away

[–] TheMadMando77@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

It’s a phone, so of course I have the Phone app somewhere easily accessible. Otherwise I’d be just an iPod touch lol

[–] Magnetoreception@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Yeah but is it actually used or is it just there for the once in a blue moon that it’s opened?

[–] Empty-Swing@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Um... Yeah I need the phone app, people call me on my phone and I may need that number or need to listen to voicemail.

[–] Magnetoreception@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I’m not saying it isn’t used but is it actually a top 4 app?

I didn't bother customizing the dock. I always use the search and launch method to use apps. I have all home screens disabled anyway except one main page.

[–] MathsRodrigues@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I don’t. But i like to keep the stock dock as much as possible.

Stock: Phone | Safari | iMessage | Apple Music

Mine: Phone | Safari | Whatsapp | Spotify

(I substitute the app but the purpose is the same. Ex: messaging and music streaming)

[–] Daddys_Milk@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

wowwww i just realized im wasting that spot with apple music because im a spotify user. thank you!!

[–] fabrictm@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Almost daily. I have people in my favorites like my wife, mother, father(when he was alive), best friends. I look at missed calls, I check voicemails(yes, Gen Z people, voicemail, because the grown-ups still leave voicemails sometimes). To dial people in my contacts I sometimes open contacts, sometimes open the phone app.

[–] fabrictm@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I also have the Google voice app in my dock. For anything business - aka that’s not personal like friends and family - I use GV, and give out my GV number. I got burned with scam calls, and it was a royal pain to change phone numbers.

[–] bane_of_heretics@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I prefer texting people more than calling, but I keep the phone app on the dock regardless. I guess it’s a habit? Won’t be changing it anytime soon.

[–] JaxTellerr@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

You’re the odd one out bro

[–] RetiredBSN@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I’m old, so I tend to do a fair amount of calling to various stores or doctors, etc. Being able to get to contacts or recents or favorites quickly is nice, and having it in the dock means it’s there no matter what home screen I’m on.

[–] diehardbattery@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I rarely need the phone app. Not enough to keep it in the dock. So I assigned it to the action button on my 15PM. So far so good.

[–] Ozonewanderer@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Are you saying your make voice calls through messages or you just text instead of speaking?

[–] Acalthu@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

er, yes? To make phone calls and stuff.

[–] floobie@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

The phone app has always been in the bottom left on my dock and probably always will be. But, honestly no… I’ve had my phone for 2 years and only have 11 hours logged of actual phone calls. I usually really prefer to message people. For longer chats with friends elsewhere in the world, I usually use Discord instead. Actual phone calls are usually reserved for situations where I need an answer right away and/or my hands are full.

I’ve noticed this seems to be a bit of a cultural/social circle thing. Some people seem to always be on the phone and treat that as the default way to talk to people… other people are more like me, I guess, and only use it in very specific situations.

[–] mellonsticker@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

A lot of people have tech illiterate parents and other relatives, so regular cellular phone calls still take place.

[–] Economy-Weird-2368@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I feel so old right now.

[–] pizza_toast102@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Nope, phone app is nowhere near my top 4 most used apps. Probably not even top 10

[–] Jeffro187@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

yep. some of us old timers still use the phone :)

[–] asianinindia@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Yes I do. I mostly call and hardly message. My work also mostly involves phone calls. No one responds on time to messages and most of the time they ask me why I didn't call if it was important. So calls. Or WhatsApp calls.

[–] Tyler927@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Always thought this was kinda strange too haha I make like 4 calls a week, and half of those I use siri to make. Hasn’t been on my dock in years

[–] salloumk@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

No we have it in the dock because we never use it

[–] Darkmage4@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Yep! I call my mom, my grandma, and other family, quick access to the dialer for calls I need to make, etc.

If it’s somewhere else, I would be lost trying to find it and just ask Siri. lol

I call my husband sometimes and my parents occasionally so yes, it’s in my dock. It was also there automatically when I got my first iphone and I can only assume when I transfer my old data to a new phone that the format remains.

[–] rsuomisucks@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I noticed that is easier to just swipe down on screen then search name to who I want to call and then click name than open phone app for calling

[–] Bruhhhhhhhhhhhhs@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

That’s because you use messages, if you used the phone app it’d make sense.

[–] supreme_yogi@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I removed Phone from the dock AND the home screen just a couple days after switching to iOS this year. I need the phone app maybe once a month or less and if I need it I just summon it through Spotlight.

[–] Uh-ohthelaundrysdone@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Not sure why there is so much snark. Not everyone can speak, even people who own smartphones.

[–] acayaba@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Interesting you’d ask this. Recently I debated that myself and moved it out. But it felt so weird I moved it back the same day. It’s the first app on my dock and it’s always been there. I think first and foremost the iPhone is a phone, so I need it there.

[–] Popular_Register_440@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I don’t get what the uproar is. I don’t have the phone app on my dock. I have Messages, Safari, WhatsApp and Spotify. Hell, I could prob survive life by just having YouTube instead of Messages on the dock and just interacting with the dock lol.

I use the Phone app about 3-4 times a week and it’s on my first screen where unsurprisingly, all my most used apps are which means I’m nearly always on that screen. So for me, it’s not really an inconvenience to not have it on my dock.

Edit: I take that back, I remembered the existence of Google Maps 4 seconds after posting.

[–] DeepChill@sh.itjust.works 1 points 11 months ago

My Phone app is buried in a folder on the second page of apps. Only time I ever use it is when someone makes the mistake of calling me and I have to check the transcript of the voicemail to see what it was about.

[–] Answer-Altern@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Phone is one of the last reach for me. Only for those at the fringe of smartphones and still thinking a phone as a voice calling device.

[–] Wartz@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Yes because when I want to make a call it's usually for a really important reason that I might want to be able to do quickly.

[–] MyLifeInThe6@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago
[–] DooDeeDoo3@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Yea i don’t have the phone app. Spotlight can allow me to dial directly. Any calls are in the notifications. Hardly need it. Others will catch up your just ahead of the curb.
