This has never not happened for me, but official cables continue to function for me to this day. Does the iPhone fry unofficial cables on purpose after a certain amount of time?

What brands and where you getting them from?

There’s definitely poorly made third party ones out there that haven’t even worked for me out of the box. I basically don’t gamble with anything. It’s anker or 1st party

Same here - I’ve got a three year old Anker cable that has multiple daily uses. They’re also the only non-apple cable that I can use with my laptops that give me full functionality.

It's more the quality of the cable really, common fault is internal breakage for example because they use less and poorer quality wire. I've rarely had any third party fail due but I buy decent branded but inexpensive ones. I've not had an Apple cable fail either, but have had cosmetic damage like a lot of people where the sheathing breaks off etc.

In the span of this year, I've had two random apparently MFI certified, but definitely not reputable brand cables stop working on my iPhone and work perfectly fine on my iPad (7th gen).
