Are you building an app for InsertRedditCompetitor? I am not.

There are other reddit “competitors” out there, but Lemmy/Kbin is the main one, so I wonder why he didn’t name drop it. It’s odd that he chooses to not pursue this or atleast make it easier for the community, considering he is very active on Mastodon. Perhaps he doesn’t see monetary value in creating Apollo for Lemmy since he already made millions off of Apollo and currently with Pixel Pals

https://old.reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comments/182v1it/_/kam3jaf/?context=1 Christian’s thoughts on open-sourcing Apollo (Not happening). Would’ve made it a whole lot easier to port Apollo to Lemmy, but we have many great alternatives now, so not a huge issue. Still, would’ve been useful for a lot of developers to see how he implemented some features.

Don’t think that’s too strange. He had a great run with Apollo, despite the bitter ending. It’s not weird that he’d want to move on and do something new rather than another app that’s more or less the same.

I know him personally, we’ve had conversations about Lemmy, he has no interest. I’ve also showed him Voyager, and he’s not flattered with all the settings that are Apollo-like.

I can see why he wouldn’t like the fact that it’s basically a one to one copy

Yes me too.

On the other hand: If he has no desire to deliver a new client is it really that surprising someone steps in?

I’m not cross. He has every right to decide what to do with his software. But to expect others not to learn from his lessons seems a bit odd to me, tbh.

I mean, voyager is more than “learn from his lessons”. It’s 0.99:1. Memmy is more what you’re saying. They being said Is l’m not complaining. Apollo nostalgia is what got me on lemmy lol

I saw a bit of that on the microblogging part of fedi (er, Mastodon), firstly saying it was creepy how close it was, then months later he posted something that was obviously showing he wasn't pleased. I chimed in saying it's out of love for the original app, not out of any malice.

He worked hard on adding features we wanted, and some we didn’t even know we wanted, so he feels it’s not a form of flattery, more like it’s easy and takes not a lot of effort to copy like that.

Well he's not interested in implementing those in Lemmy nor opensourcing it so…

[–] Flaky@iusearchlinux.fyi 1 points 11 months ago

As a hobbyist programmer, I would say it wouldn't be easy to implement per se, but I might be taking that a bit literally. I can understand that sorta feeling to an extent, though - I don't think the Voyager devs meant any illwill towards him, hence why I posted that.

He probably didn’t name drop it because Reddit has been known to erase prominent posts that advertise their most direct competitor, and it was probably a catchall for any other platforms since he’s apparently uninterested all around.

OP, I'm just going to be blunt. Between this, the post about the plush (where you put a lot of accusations with no proof) and the post you made on c/Voyager, it seems like you're trying to attack Christian. It's pretty weird.

[–] UgandaSans@reddthat.com 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

It’s not really that weird to see the plushie pop up, and then decide to view his recent posts / comments. Not sure how this post or the voyager post can be considered “attacks” either. I’ll provide some proof towards what I said in the other post in a bit.

It was how you made the posts after this one that made me think there was some ulterior motive here, esp with the Voyager one. That one in particular felt like you were trying to rile their community up.
