May I ask a question what does a ATV gen 3 has that new TVs like LG C3 or Samsung S90C don't offer already?

Or anything that it does better than them?

Or is it product for older product mainly.

Genuinely curious, as I just stepped into Apple ecosystem (iphone, ipad, MacBook) this week, as an Android and Windows user for my whole life.

Meanwhile I just got a Samsung S90C.

A device that respects the user

I bought a refurbished gen 1 this week to replace the firetv stick in my bedroom. It’s astonishing how smooth it runs and how much more quality I get out of the soundbar! Guess I’m getting one for the big screen in living room, too, even tho it has all apps built in.

Only thing that bothers me is that you cannot turn off the light.

A small piece of black electrical tape can fix the light issue.

I now just have to figure i just bought a 4K tv to complement the appleTV4K i have had for years. Its great. But some disney plus shows are very dim now

That's an unfortunate shortcoming of our current displays and current standards.

The standards are ambitious and allow for dynamic ranges well beyond what our hardware is currently capable of. Even our most expensive displays can't do the full range of our standards. So we play games with mapping of the theoretical range to our comparatively dim displays. Even after doing that, many people still find the image annoyingly dark.

You may find that you enjoy watching HDR content converted to SDR. It will be brighter and easier to see, though less accurate.

HDR displays are getting brighter each year. But for the foreseeable future, HDR content will still appear too dim for some people. There's no way around that other than brighter displays or a standards/usage change by the industry.

Personally, I think HDR could have been handled better by everyone. Someday, our current content mastering will display beautifully. It just doesn't quite yet.

That’s the HDR kicking in! The show may be more dim, but it will have much more accurate colors and you are viewing closer to how the director intended.

I would have assumed the director wanted me to see what is happening in the scene.

Jokes aside, something is wrong in the hdr/dolby vision relay between the disney app to apple tv 4k to the tv. I’ll figure it out.

Apple TV smokes anything else on the market. (bonus points if you’re in the Apple eco system)

Depends on. The built in android tv is more useful because it doesn’t have the hdmi problems (blackouts, idiotic third party apps trying to play with the framerates, etc). On the other hand, android tv has ads which I hate. Another major plus is the Apple ecosystem.

I bought the newest Apple TV, but I stopped using it for its many problems. I have a lot of knowledge in tv technologies, so I know how they should work. I just made the built-in android tv behave as Apple TV as much as possible, with all the benefits.

I have a iPhone and a 2017 MacBook Air but the MacBook is running Fedora Linux (Silverblue).

I litteraly canceld my setup box from my internet/tv provider since the apple tv supports their app aswell and its way smoother 😅

[–] melancious@alien.top 0 points 11 months ago

I’ve been extremely happy with it for 3 years.

Still the best standalone TV streamer out there.
