I hope rants are allowed on r/apple... didn't see anything about it in the rules.

My iOS keyboard has new behavior since a few days ago. I have most of the QOL features turned off because I sometimes mix different languages, use abbreviations and sometimes need to communicate scientific names/concepts that aren't saved in dictionaries. I do like the "predictive" option because it saves me from typing commonly used words. Apparently there is now an auto-fill feature that is grouped with the predictive keyboard option. So, if I type "Backe" (german for cheek) but iOS thinks the most likely word I am writing is "backed" it will automatically add a "d" when I hit space.

I

HATE

THIS

Please for the love of god put all the auto-correct / auto-format / auto-fill / auto-bulls*** options separately from the other QOL options. Predictive text options IS NOT the same as typing things automatically for me. It should never be combined.

Anybody else experiencing this frustration? Does anybody have a workaround? I have never really experimented with custom keyboards before but maybe I should.

omw

Wait sorry I mean

On my way!

Also since we’re airing grievances why the heck isn’t the stop watch part of the clock app a live activity. The timer is but the stock watch isn’t…

That's ducking awful.

Strangely, after using iphones since the very first, there are spelling corrections coming up constantly that are incorrect. For example, while typing the word corrections, it popped up with corrextions. This is not ok.

Is there a way to replace Apple’s dictionary check with a third party? I’m not talking about Grammarly which I have (I don’t like the Grammarly ios keyboard).

Even when it's not autocorrecting, the suggested words at teh top are regularly really bad. Plus this keyboard lags real bad if you type fast. Switched to Gboard the other day and it's a massive improvement in performance

I honestly think everything about the new keyboard/iMessage is abysmal.

Having AutoFill right next to paste means accidentally clicking into my contacts three times a day, there’s two dictation buttons if you have that on, and the new app tray is so unbelievable cumbersome (and takes up the entire screen).

No idea what they were thinking this update. I feel like I used to be able to type like a wizard a few updates ago and for the last few months I’ve been struggling to adapt.

I just take an extra 30 seconds to read what I wrote and edit accordingly.

[–] phlegyas78@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

This exactly is why I'm still using swiftkey.

[–] qwop22@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

like swiftkey but is there a way to get it to show emoji when I type a word? That is one thing I use all the time in ios keyboard. So if I type "lol" the laughing emoji will show up in the suggestions at top. Or if I type "Omg" or "sad" or "cry" etc

[–] sneakinhysteria@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Autocorrect and its related features have always sucked and continue to suck even more - particularly for people using more than one language. I fail to believe there aren’t enough multilingual people at Apple to recognise this. I use three languages everyday, English, German, Dutch. The overlap between all three creates huge issues. I don’t need machine learning to identify objects in my photos anywhere near as much as I just need my phone to correctly identify the language I’m using at any moment. This shouldn’t be hard, it’s highly contextualised.

One of the many iOS “features” that clearly show Apple either doesn’t know or care that other countries and languages exist.

[–] -protonsandneutrons-@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Multilingual spellcheck is so fucking terrible on iOS's stock keyboard.

Like, literally, 10 years behind what Android had. Such a shame 3rd-party keyboards are pretty handicapped.

the internet in general is anti multilingualism. I’ll be happily using the internet in German and then both google and autocorrect will suddenly try to force me into English and vice versa. I’m not really sure what the fix is but it’s wildly annoying.

All I know is that Apple said they've improved the keyboard with iOS 17 and frankly I've never been more frustrated with it. I don't know what they even did but here's the problems I've been having:

  • Swipe typing has become nigh-unusable for me. Gets the wrong word nearly every time, takes forever.
  • It is incredibly annoying to put the cursor where I want it now because it's constantly selecting things, and when I actually do want to select things, it selects the wrong things and becomes very fiddly to adjust.
  • General autocorrect, much like swipe typing, has become extremely inaccurate.

I used to love alternate keyboards on Android and tried to keep up with them once I moved to iOS but it's usually not a great experience here because of Apple's restrictions. But at this point the stock keyboard has become so bad that I feel like I have no choice. It has been making my phone demonstrably worse as of late.

Anybody have any third-party keyboards they recommend?

[–] osama-bin-dada@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Press and hold the spacebar for fine control of the cursor

[–] ErisUppercut@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I much prefer it and I use it too and it's good... but it can have issues too. Particularly around auto switching to a longer word. It should never, ever do this. Drives me crazy. But, I did try going back to the Apple keyboard after the new iOS but it sucked so hard I gratefully ran back to SwiftKey

[–] Nerioner@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Give it a few more months and with app sideloading we will have better alternatives coming (hopefully)

[–] zippy72@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

For the first time since I've had an iPhone, I've had to turn off auto correct. I just can't stand the changes, it keeps getting worse and those blue lines were the straw that broke me.

[–] KingLancelot1991@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I HATE THE WAY IT DOESNT LET ME BACKSPACE JUST CUZ A SUGGESTION IS HIGHLIGHTED

I SPECIFICALLY WENT OUT OF MY WAY TO DISABLE AUTOCORRECT AND I HARDLY EVER EVEN USE THE SUGGESTIONS

CUT IT THE FUCK OUT

[–] BestCatEva@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

This is sooo annoying. To go back when this happens, I have to delete a whole bunch of things I actually want to keep.

[–] vaidab@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I use Gboard as a keyboard. Never looked back.

[–] TrickyElephant@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Apple keyboard just sucks. I miss the keyboard on Android so much

[–] sbos_@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Can someone explain what’s happened to the auto check? It’s actually return made up words now

[–] loscemochepassa@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I actually find it much better than before, but I do switch the keyboard language to match the one I’m writing in, while in the past it was able to adapt even if I didn’t switch.

[–] rJohn420@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I have both the Italian and the us/uk English and it works really well. I don’t know what everyone is complaining about. I don’t even have to switch as you mentioned.

[–] Notyourfathersgeek@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

This is annoying. I keep different language keyboards and switch constantly between them to avoid all these troubles.

[–] half_man_half_cat@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

They need to fix corrections for multiple keyboards too

[–] megas88@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I don’t know what I have to turn off but both QuickPath typing and literally typing out entire words without using anything else results in words I do not type. QuickPath never fuckin learns the words should, it’s, and more I can’t think at at the moment but they’re really common words to type. Couple that with the fact that simply typing specific words somehow triggers some kind of autocorrect I had turned off and I have never been more frustrated at the iOS keyboard in my life.

Really hope Apple fixes this mess soon. I’ve been journaling like crazy and hate having to proofread every entry just to make sure it looks the way I typed it out in the first place.

[–] taxis-asocial@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I do like the "predictive" option because it saves me from typing commonly used words. Apparently there is now an auto-fill feature that is grouped with the predictive keyboard option. So, if I type "Backe" (german for cheek) but iOS thinks the most likely word I am writing is "backed" it will automatically add a "d" when I hit space.

Wait, I’m still on iOS 16 and my phone does that too? Sometimes if I type a word and hit space it will change it, so I have to go back and re-type the word and then tap the word itself in quotes on the leftmost side of the predicted list of words

[–] 3dio@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I use the Microsoft keyboard. Way better

[–] Prime255@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

This is why I still use Swiftkey. The IOS keyboard is still garbage, even in 2023. Also, loves switching back to its horrible keyboard every now and then to remind you how bad it was.

[–] QXPZ@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Due to iOS 17 selecting properly spelled words when I simply wanted to place the cursor, it literally drove me to Android after 15 years of iOS!! Galaxy Fold5 baby. Come on over, the water's warm. Dunno wtf Apple is doing here.

[–] somewhat_asleep@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

The safari search bar is what drives me nuts. I guess the system just doesn't think I'm very accurate + apparently prioritizing domain names results.in.everything.fucking.coming.out.like.this when i just want to enter a search string.

[–] TizonaBlu@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I’ve been ending my sentences with v for as long as I can remember. Fucking annoying v

I still hate you have basically no option to customize the keyboard, whereas on android you can change most things, like size of keyboard, vibration etc. One this that drives me nuts on iOS keyboards is the lack of a dedicated comma button, like why?

[–] Exoslab@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Thank goodness I’m not the only one. The autocorrect actually seems worse with the newest update.

[–] CD_4M@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

100% agree. Truly nothing in this world infuriates me like when I correctly type something and iOS “corrects” it for me into something I never intended to type
