Purchased an A1989 MacBook Pro back in 2019. Have been using it ever since as a daily driver. Noticed unusual colour gradients this morning as per the photo. Has my computer succumbed to the dreaded Flexgate issue?

Doesn’t seem like it. Both my old and new MacBooks have this on certain wallpapers. Even my iMac has it.

Looks like it, contact apple support and see if your macbook is eligible for the repair program.

It’d be very very very very rare for a laptop to be eligible for the program anymore. The program is ONLY for 2016 13” 4 & 2 port models, no other models are eligible with this program & due to the age most, if not all sold units have surpassed the eligibility time.

EDIT: A number of users suggested that this effect rises from the colour banding present within Apple's wallpaper that comes prepackaged with MacOS Sonoma.

After capturing a screensnip, I can confirm that this effect is generated by the launchpad screen overlaying the colour banding in the wallpaper.

Flexgate is a series of white spots along the bottom edge of the screen. Not like this.
