I can understand why Apple may be reluctant to introduce snow shoveling as a workout; getting a dozen software engineers from California to get cups of hot coco to trial it would be a tough sell.

Whereas thousands of people suffer from cardiac episodes directly associated from shoveling snow each year, I would love to see Apple add it in as a safety monitor similar to car crash detection if nothing else.

Does anyone know of third party watch apps which can track snow shoveling in the meantime?

So I recently started using Gentler Streak for tracking workouts and this post made me check to see if that app has a shoveling option. To my surprise, it does!

Doesn’t the watch already monitor your heart and warn?

Just start an outdoor walk workout

I used to just start an ”Other” workout when I shoveled. Now I just sit by the beach in the nice warm south…. ;-)

I use the "Play" workout when doing yard work or snow removal, cause as ya know, its so fun.

Know your own limits. Lift with your legs. Stay hydrated. GG

I never start a workout but it always gives me almost every minute as green ring.

I think if Apple could offer heart attack as a warning to the watch, they would have done so long ago. I know that they warn you that Apple Watch cannot detect heart attack on two different screens when you start an ECG on a supported watch. Clearly Apple hasn't been able to reliably detect heart attacks as an event with the watch.

This is almost certainly an awareness issue. Can’t program for an issue that they don’t know exists. I wouldn’t have known that anyone suffers cardiac issues from shoveling snow, let alone thousands every year. Definitely a good idea to suggest it to Apple.

Use dance. People will think you’re the man. Just dancing around for hours every time it snows.

There is an app named WorkOther, you can add whatever you want as workout options with it, like cleaning house, washing dishes, and shoveling you want.
