Anyone else have this happen to them? I choose a route and as im driving, Apple Maps will give alternate routes that take much longer.

You’re getting routes that are often used by people making that drive. From your location is at least use that slight detour down 287 and forget about passing through Dallas.

Off topic but you look eerily close to where I live 😂 that’s Grapevine, southlake, Colony area I assume

Why is this so accurate

[–] BrazilBazil@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Nah it’s more like

Apple Maps: Drive through this forest, your destination is in the middle of the lake

Google maps: If you take a shortcut through this field of corn you will save 2 minutes

Waze: Why the fuck are you using us outside of the US?

One of the biggest mistake I ever did was trusting Apple Maps during travel

[–] jdbcn@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I find it better than Google Maps now. And better looking

[–] MrSh0wtime3@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I drive all over the country. Apple maps has been fine the last year. Even handled Pittsburgh really well. And if you have ever driven in Pittsburgh thats a real accomplishment.

[–] rootofallworlds@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

It normally shows three choices. Even if one is significantly slower it still tends to show it.

I just did Birmingham to Newcastle and got similar results. About 3 1/2 hours by the M42 and A1, another route that detours into Sheffield and Leeds but is only slightly slower, but then a route via the M6 to Carlisle and A69 that’s more like 4 1/2 hours.

If for whatever reason you wanted to avoid that section of I45, or I wanted to avoid the A1, those routes are offered.

Believe it or not there are people that will add 20 min to a 80 min drive to save a buck on a toll

[–] ptraugot@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I never trust Apple Maps. Don’t care what Apple says about improvements.

[–] sose5000@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

There aren’t that many routes for where you’re going.

[–] mxguy762@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Just be happy bro

[–] Neck-Pain-Dealer@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

It’s a way of saying. Take the scenic route.

[–] 869066@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I’m pretty sure that the way Apple Maps (and other navigation apps) are made, they will always show alternate routes even if they are much longer

[–] Makhnos_Tachanka@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

It’s in ATF mode

[–] RandomUser9724@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I have the avoid ferries button ticked on. Comes in handy when you live in the desert.

[–] jasonbm76@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Always weird when I get on Reddit and see a map that goes right past my house (Woodlands area of Houston) lol

[–] khakilamble@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I have had options where Apple Maps recommends that I get off the interstate, go do a loop in a a neighborhood, then get back on the highway right where I got off. And it’s about 15 minutes slower. Still no idea why.

[–] AllYouNeedIsATV@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Yes. I was driving to Brisbane (10.5 hr drive most of it oh highway if done right) right before covid lockdown (so almost no traffic). Stupid Apple Maps had me go through every fucking town possible, and there weren’t even tolls or traffic!!

[–] jmoney1119@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I’ve had it a couple times suggest a route that avoids large highways and interstates which is what this looks like. A lot of people just don’t like or can’t use the high speed highways. And if you’re not in a hurry, often those are much better for just a chill road trip.

[–] Texas12thMan@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Maybe Chip and Joanna Gaines pay Apple to send people through Waco to visit their cash cows?

[–] hitherto_ex@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I blame Texas

[–] jereezy@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Well in fairness, it is Texas...

[–] ericafterdark-nl@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Apple Maps is horrible for navigating in the EU. I wish it was better so I could drop other apps.

[–] Thats-nice-smile@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Doesn’t google do the same thing? It shows different routes that take longer, it’s a normal feature.

[–] RuneRavenXZ@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I don’t see your point. Sometimes people want alternate routes. It shows you the time it takes, so you’re obviously already on the faster route. This seems like a pointless post.

[–] Plastic-Mess-3959@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

That’s actually the way I go up through college station

[–] dekomorii@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Even google maps did this once, i travel less now tho

[–] InappropriateCanuck@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Apple maps has always sucked. No matter what the fanboys keep whining about, Google is so fucking far ahead. I'm not sure how Apple maps taps TomTom considering how much better even Sygic is.

Half the time when I come back from work the stupid thing shoves me straight into traffic while Waze takes aggressive cuts through neighborhood and gets me there in half the time thus saving me a ton of gas.

[–] InappropriateCanuck@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

It surprises me so much that people actually use Apple maps to drive anywhere.

[–] Drtysouth205@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

While not as in depth as Google. It’s actually not that bad if you just wanna go point A to B. If you are planning stops or wanting in depth about things on the route etc Google is still the best.

[–] MrSh0wtime3@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

they really gotta drop Yelp

[–] UrBrainAintBraining@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

The people who complain about this are probably the same ones that would complain if they weren’t given the same options…

[–] rlovelock@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Pretty normal for Google maps as well although this is extreme.

The worst is when Google suggests a route that just leaves the route I'm on very temporarily and then rejoins it, adding time to the trip.

It's like, thanks Google, I'm good.

[–] Supplex-idea@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

If you don’t want to take the alternative route then just ignore it. Others might want to take the other route to maybe get some food, pick someone up, take a more scenic route, or something else.

Here you can see the alternate route takes you through Waco and Fort Worth. Maybe someone just REALLY hates Huntsville? Just take your route if that’s what you want.

[–] cerebud@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Some people like scenic routes. Also, it’s showing how much faster your current route is.

[–] baker2795@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

If they just showed the 3 fastest routes it’d just be the same route with a couple different turns right at the end. This way you can choose a different main road to take into the city

[–] Competitive_Pool_820@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

It’s trying to give your alternative route. Even if it takes longer it’s an option in some cases.

[–] slavsetup@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Lived in grapevine for few years. Good place

[–] MrSh0wtime3@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

in the last year ive started preferring Apple maps. It doesnt try and take me on a re route that saves 3 seconds but takes me off the highway like Google does far too often.

And one thing they flat out do better is the small detail directions in cities. Like....go past this light and turn right at the next one. Sounds like a small thing but can be a huge help in a busy city you haven't been to before. I also prefer their on screen lane directions on busy 4+ lane highways.

[–] PM_ME_Y0UR_BOOBZ@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Apple Maps employees have not taken graph theory classes I guess

[–] matador44@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

The alternative slower route is scenic route to Dallas. Great to take if you're in a nice car and want to make some stops along the way. The other is the plain boring 45 north everyone takes.

[–] arny56@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

As long as you're not on I35 it's all good.

[–] CAndrewK@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

It’s probably poorly executed ML, where that alternate route has consistently been a good alternate route, but is not in this case, but this is recommending it anyway
