Everything #OpenStreetMap related is welcome: software releases, showing of your work, questions about how to tag something, as long as it has to do with OpenStreetMap or OpenStreetMap-related software.

OpenStreetMap is a map of the world, created by people like you and free to use under an open license.

Join OpenStreetMap and start mapping: https://www.openstreetmap.org.

There are many communication channels about OSM, many organized around a certain country or region. Discover them on https://openstreetmap.community

https://mapcomplete.org is an easy-to-use website to view, edit and add points (such as shops, restaurants and others)

https://learnosm.org/en/ has a lot of information for beginners too.

MODERATORS

Hi all!

Welcome to the OSM-community on Lemmy. With this post, we'd like to introduce us, tell us what you expect from this place and what it should/might become.

BTW: we are still open to add more moderators! Make an introduction post here, mentioning why you want to moderate and showing some of your mapping work. (If you don't want to share your OSM-username, you can also PM that to one of the mods)

So, I'm @pietervdvn (https://osm.org/user/Pieter%20Vander%20Vennet ; he/him), I'm the main dev of https://mapcomplete.osm.be . I'm involved with OSM most of the time and quite happy that there is momentum to move away from Reddit to an open-source, federated platform. ;) Personally, I already have a lot on my plate so I do not have enough team to moderate this place, so I'd like to get a team here quickly and start this place so that I can retire here.

https://lemmy.ml/u/Ben_on_Lemmy was the original founder of this community - but lost interest as nobody joined a few years back. But the tides have turned! One thorough search for the password of his account later and he's back!

At last, https://lemmy.ml/u/SyJ just joined the moderation team as well - even though I don't know a whole lot about them.

So:

  • Do you have any questions for us?
  • What do you expect from the moderation team?
  • What do you expect from !openstreetmap?
  • What should this place look like in about one year time?

Hello,

I’m Ben and my profile page reminds me I’ve been on Lemmy since the early days back in 2019 (and I need external memory, because my internal one regularly fails, as Pieter explained… 😂).

I figured back then OpenStreetMap deserved its discussion corner on Lemmy, so I went on. And there was activity but rather quiet with mainly news posts and no real discussion threads.

Meanwhile, a lot happened to Lemmy, the Fediverse, and the outside, so we’re good for more activity on here, and that’s excellent news!

I can’t really make the time to map a lot in the last years, but I keep myself interested in mapping and in the OSM ecosystem at large, so all things OpenStreetMap usually catch my interest and are open to discuss.

As a mod, I still have to discover what the duty will really impose, but I’m positive we’ll make it a nice place all together. 🎉

Hello,

I just wanted to introduce myself as one of the moderation team, I am a photographer and make regular use of maps to explore locations before I visit them in person, I find comparing different mapping tools very useful rather than just relying on google. I will keep my OSM account private as I prefer not to share too much information online, but I have been using the system for many years and have spent time editing and mapping a number of areas. I have moderation experience from a few other sites, including reddit and here on lemmy, so hopefully I can help steer the ship and keep things in order!

Hey everyone, I applied to be part of the moderation team and this is my introduction :

I've been working as a system administrator for roughly a decade. I like to keep things tidy and well maintained, and I'm a big proponent of open source and open data. My current Lemmy account is fairly new, but that because I switched from a previous account that is 4 years old (see my Lemmy bio). I've also been a Reddit moderator on a sub of roughly 100k users before I mostly gave up on Reddit. Here's my OSM profile.

Contributing to OSM feels like to me as a great way to contribute to my local area by keeping things up to date, and by offering a good alternative to the commercial players like Google and Apple Maps.

If you need some help on how to update or publish some data on OSM feel free to ask, and we're always open to suggestion :)

Hello, glad to have this community here! I could certainly use it more than once.

Would love to be a moderator, having been an OpenStreetMap user and contributor for a while.

What do you expect from the moderation team?

Not much, be chill and intervene where necessary.

What do you expect from !openstreetmap?

A middle ground between the community forum and twitter, I guess. Leave binding discussions, to the wiki and mailing lists (though if we want to share arguments here, nothings speaks against it). Any niche that allows for occasional deep talk next to showcases.

What should this place look like in about one year time?

A fair share of projects, while hopefully not the only type of content (maybe showoff threads become a necessity there)
Similarly I think projects with the data, such as renderings should have a place here, within reason. Both would probably profit from a flair system, but thats more a task for lemmy-dev than osm-lemmy-mods.
Questions and a culture that answers them in a respectful manner.
Discussion of OSM related news, such as WeeklyOSM.

Do you have any questions for us?

Long time redditor, first time lemmyng: coming from feddit, is it unusual that my abonnement is still shown as pending? Posts do appear in my feddit-feed.

Cool!

Having some nice maps here? Sound like a plan, as long as they are (partially) OSM-based ;)

Discussion of OSM related news, such as WeeklyOSM.

I did ping them to automatically post here as well

Well, we don't have a lot of Lemmy-experience too... I guess that the federation still has to take place? I assume this is a technicality and it'll resolve eventually.

goes without saying >_> (there may be some leeway on how much of it should be required to be OSM, yes)
