I mean, I get it. Actual network intrusion detection is pretty boring considering most things are getting hit a few hundred/thousand times a day.

Afaik this isn't completely ridiculous. Some viruses add themselves to exe files. Then the virus checkers can look for that fingerprint within the file data.
