Was it really about Brexit, not abortion or other local policies?

But we tend to find ourselves agreeing more often with parties that espouse liberal values, internationalism and centrist economics, such as the Democrats in the US, Liberal Democrats in the UK, FDP in Germany, Renaissance/MoDem in France, the Liberal Party in Canada, and so on. **Further reading** - I’m a neoliberal. Well I certainly wouldn't say it was about Brexit, but I think Will Hutton's point is a good one - Brexit has been such a shit show that, by association, it has tarnished anti-EU populism right across Europe.
It's striking that many of the right-wing populist parties that were either openly or tacitly flirting with EU exit policies before 2016 have had to downplay or drop those positions to be credible with their voters after Brexit.
The article is also making more of a point about UK politics - that Poland serves as a good example for the UK of how a seemingly entrenched right-wing populist government can be defeated by liberal democratic values.
