Original Title: A Brentwood homeowner illegally converted his guesthouse into an AirBnB without proper permits. A tenant figured this out and has been staying there for 540 days without paying — and because the homeowner skirted the law, they have no legal right to evict her or collect payment

“She’s the tenant from hell,” Rucci told the Times. “If she’s right, the theory is that if a landlord has something that isn’t permitted, then you can stay in it rent-free forever.”

Sounds like a great theory. Private rented accommodation would soon become much, much better.

The opposite of that is that the landlord can do whatever they like, breaking as many housing laws as they like, and you still have to pay rent and they can evict you, which sounds like a bad plan to me.
