General Discussion for politics in the UK.
Please don't post to both !uk_politics@feddit.uk and !unitedkingdom@feddit.uk .
Pick the most appropriate, and put it there.

Posts should be related to UK-centric politics, and should be either a link to a reputable news source for news, or a text post on this community.

Opinion pieces are also allowed, provided they are not misleading/misrepresented/drivel, and have proper sources.

If you think "reputable news source" needs some definition, by all means start a meta thread. (These things should be publicly discussed)

Posts should be manually submitted, not by bot. Link titles should not be editorialised.

Disappointing comments will generally be left to fester in ratio, outright horrible comments will be removed.
Message the mods if you feel something really should be removed, or if a user seems to have a pattern of awful comments.

!ukpolitics@lemm.ee appears to have vanished! We can still see cached content from this link, but goodbye I guess! :'(

Why on earth are there loop holes in the first place?

Because while it's easy to say we want to ban all conversion therapy, we don't want to accidentally criminalise things like teachers and doctors discussing sexual health issues with people. There's a whole bunch of people that need protections built into any legislation that can't then be abused by bigots.

It's all doable, it's just complex and will take time, likely multiple iterations and constant monitoring for abuse.

Because it's socially unpopular to attack gay people but you can still whack trans people in the head and garner enough applause from it to get elected so people do.

"No Loopholes", Labour says, thinking that loopholes are intentional

...They literally are in some scenarios.

When Cameron's Government "closed" the tax avoidance loopholes in 2014(?) they went to my sister's boyfriend at the times firm which literally finds ways for multimillionaire/billionaires to not pay tax to close the loop holes but enable other means to remain functional.

Like this firm made millions purely from helping billionaires avoid tax, they aren't going to give up their income source because the government gave them a few thousand to act as consultants on the new bill being drafted.

They were consulted so the government at the time could "close the loopholes" and discretely open up others.

In the same way that (IIRC) regarding the conversion therapy ban, it was pointed out that there were loopholes left in when the bill was drafted.

Can't wait until Starmer uturns next week on this when he sees the polls and remembers that he hasn't done a thing about Rosie Duffield

This is the best summary I could come up with:

A “no loopholes”, trans-inclusive ban on conversion therapy would be introduced under a Labour government, according to the shadow women and equalities secretary.

Concerns have been expressed in Parliament in recent weeks over the whereabouts of the Government’s draft proposals to ban conversion therapy, which seeks to suppress a person’s sexual or gender identity.

It added the Bill must not inadvertently criminalise parents or clinicians who need to be able to have “legitimate conversations” with children and young adults experiencing gender-related distress.

Rising hate crime, including physical attacks, a Tory Government that treats their lives and their rights as a political football, and a Prime Minister that sees them as a cheap punchline.

In July, Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said a self-identification system to allow transgender people to legally identify as their chosen gender without a medical diagnosis is not the “right way forward”.

Speaking on Sunday, Ms Dodds told delegates: “We will modernise the gender recognition law to a new process while continuing to support the implementation of the Equality Act that protects everyone.”
