I'm personally using the mobile website, which at the moment seems to be working a lot better than Jerboa. I'm sure we'll get there eventually, though.

You can hide read posts, it's a checkbox in the account settings menu

Yeah I have similar issues. It's an app issue, hopefully the dev can sort it out, seems like there's been a lot more updates since the Reddit blackout, but Lemmy is still young so hopefully with it training traction many other app developers will create their own and it'll be like how Reddit had a wide selection to choose from.
