I was thinking about perhaps moving things to Proton, being European and all, and touting privacy etc. Looks like that won’t happen.

Getting real fuckin tired of having to always find 'alternatives'. Can't yall rich bastards just stop being weird and be content with making good products. Just cause you have money, doesn't mean you need to have a public opinion on anything, ever

This is what I feel is the core problem of out-of-bounds capitalism today. 50-80 years ago there were fabulously wealthy people as well, but they were taxed out the wazoo and were still fabulously wealthy. And even though every corporation's goal is, and always has been, to make profit, it feels as if it's gone from "profit" to "maximum possible profit at ALL costs, including the damnation of life on the planet".

We have plenty of examples of hypercapitalism destroying us in fiction (cyberpunk etc.) but our current reality is really really close to that hellscape. In some ways it's actually worse because of the insidiousness and banality of the evil that lords over us daily.

Sorry im not from the US… what is a “wazoo”?

[–] AtariDump@lemmy.world 5 points 4 hours ago

Where a kazoo goes.

People forget that the current antitrust actions against Big Tech were started under the first Trump admin.

And you seem to have forgotten that Trump's Attorney General William Barr tried to force backdoors in encryption.

So shut the fuck up Andy, you're out of your element.

Now's probably not a bad time to mention I've used fastmail for years and it's great.

[–] afiresword@lemmy.world 3 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

Any good alternatives that have the password/identity manager and email? I'm ready to switch.

I'll be leaving Proton fucking immediately.

[–] neatobuilds@lemmy.today 15 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

just cancelled my auto renew, now I gotta find a way to manage all my custom emails again rip

[–] compostgoblin@slrpnk.net 6 points 4 hours ago (2 children)

I’m in the same boat. SimpleLogin is a nice feature, but if this is Proton’s position, they don’t get more of my money.

Firefox Relay seems like a good, free choice?

[–] VerPoilu@sopuli.xyz 2 points 3 hours ago

Duckduckgo's email service

If there's a way for the rest of Proton to force him out, now would be a good time to save face.

PROTIP: Canceling your subscription gives you a place to tell them how you feel (even if you don't end up following through with it).

But damn, where to go from here? Self hosting my own email server and password manager is a little out of my wheel house.

[–] stinerman@midwest.social 3 points 3 hours ago

As people become shittier as time goes on (especially people who run businesses), it will be harder and hard to find someone with your values that will provide a service you want.

I'd like to know what maga is going to do for the little guy besides more grifting.

[–] Bronzebeard@lemm.ee 25 points 6 hours ago

Point at different things and try to blame what they're doing to them on it.

Damn, and I just switched to proton because they have port forwarding and moderate NAT so that I can effectively seed torrents.

Here is our official response [...] the reality is that Republicans remain more likely to tackle Big Tech abuses.

lol

I... very much do not like this. But the reality is that tech companies are FULL of libertarian tech bro types who only care about "policy" as it equates to their bottom line. And a LOT of companies are going to suck up to trump in the hopes of not being made an example of by the wannabe mafia administration. And the follow up response is still bullshit but it is useful idiot bullshit, if that makes sense.

Gonna look for alternatives but not optimistic.

[–] cygnus@lemmy.ca 10 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

I could almost excuse that if they were American, but they are Swiss, as is Andy.

[–] NuXCOM_90Percent@lemmy.zip 8 points 4 hours ago

They do a lot of business in the US and would likely not want to get banned at a time when people are genuinely looking for a VPN that doesn't pretend it will fight off seal team six for you or an email service that isn't run by google.

[–] IDKWhatUsernametoPutHereLolol@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Louis Rossmann also has "Libertarian" vibes... 😖

[–] NuXCOM_90Percent@lemmy.zip 16 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago) (1 children)

Rossman has straight up chud vibes from when he was ranting about the situation where someone was allegedly screaming slurs at a delivery person through their amazon doorbell.

Also he is a guy who had to flee NYC because he couldn't run a business with regulations and instead go to Texas (?).

[–] RubberElectrons@lemmy.world 2 points 2 hours ago (2 children)

What happened there? I didn't know he left NYC, I used to pass off more difficult electronics repairs to that string of repair shops near Mott st, where he was also based.

That the democrats don't stand for the little guys anymore is something I agree with, but to then say the republicans do is wild

[–] IDKWhatUsernametoPutHereLolol@lemmy.dbzer0.com 39 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago) (5 children)

I wouldn't say he's being "Maga", but this is some "Libertarian" dumb fuck that has no clue what's happeneing in politics.

If you scroll through his twitter, he did praise some things that Biden did, so it seems like he might just be bootlicking whoever is in power as appeasement

Edit: He also seems to be pro-Ukraine and supports the activists in Hong Kong, so basically a Libertarian that leans to the political right. (And also being a huge dumbass)

[–] Oestradiolo@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 3 hours ago (6 children)

Let me guess, the word “union” would break his brain. Or even worse, a “programmers union”

What the hell does he mean "we campaigned extensively"? Republicans did? And why is he including himself in that? He's not an American and therefore shouldn't be campaigning for a goddamn thing. And if he's quoting JD Vance then that part should actually be in quotes.

Who do Schumer's daughters lobby for? What's the name of the lobby? What have they lobbied for that's actually passed and was it supported by Democrats and Republicans? Like is he gonna post actual policy or anything that Republicans have put forth for antitrust? Or is he just spouting off and doubling down in order to be defensive with little to no actual facts to back up his claims.

He could have talked about Gail Slater's track record and why she's a good fit. Instead he talked some nonsense straight from the mouth of JD Vance and pulled some random whataboutism.

Don't you have a PR team? Like Proton, as a whole should be trying to fix this.

I also love that a user literally came with receipts and he has yet to respond.

[–] Shirasho@lemmings.world 39 points 6 hours ago (8 children)

You can generally tell what way someone leans when they say "Dems" but spell out "Republicans".
