Explanation: Oftentimes, WW1 commanders have a reputation for callousness, brutality, and stupidity that is not wholly earned - despite some legitimately dumb moves, a lot of the problem in WW1 command was a mixture of trying to figure out a new mode of warfare with realizing the limitations of the organizational and material technology of the period.

Italian commander Luigi Cadorna, on the other hand, earned his reputation as a butcher, pouring countless young Italian men down into the Isonzo Valley, across the river, and up into the teeth of heavily fortified Austro-Hungarian cliffside fortifications. Over and over and over again. 12 times, each offensive lasting weeks.

No major objectives were gained by this pointless bloodshed, and, in fact, the campaign ended with a rare victory by the opposing Central Powers just before the end of the war.
