Well, you'll see what happens with Trump in the White House. NATO as a collective defense organization is on the verge of failure. Europe has the obligation, if it wants to survive as an independent power, to replace it with its own army, it is an unavoidable imperative.

Rules (2024-08-30)
- This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
- No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
- Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
- No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism.
- Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
- If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
- Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in !yurop@lemm.ee. (They're cool, you should subscribe there too!)
- Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
- No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
(This list may get expanded when necessary.)
We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.
If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.
If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the mods: @federalreverse@feddit.org, @poVoq@slrpnk.net, or @anzo@programming.dev.
The traitor is going to hand Putin Ukraine on a golden platter. Fuck this world.
The easiest way is to co-opt NATO by ignoring and replacing the US as much as possible. Recreating all the NATO structures and deals with the UK and Canada is something that could be done in a fair weather environment, with a war on our doorstep that's not realistic.
I'm sorry but I think the UK and Canada should not be in that union. Being allies ok, being part of a military union not so much. The European Union must be a strong enough actor and to do so it must have its own aircraft carriers if you understand what I mean.
I live in Canada and in the event of US autocratic regime, we are in danger. I would like it if the European Union had our back against (say) incursions from former US border states, but I get that they would have their own problems to deal with.
Don't get me wrong, Canada, the UK and others are, and in my opinion should remain, close allies with 100% mutual defense. But for the European Union I would like a fully integrated common army, even more than the current NATO and that would not make sense without at least a partial political union, something that the EU already has and that neither Canada nor the UK want
That's a different matter though. The above comment was about co-opting NATO if the US lost interest in it.
That doesn't go against the EU working towards forming a joint military.
As long as NATO exists, the EU will never have a united army.
Tbh, I don't really see how? What about NATO prevents it?
And what about the countries of Europe that are in NATO (or have expressed a desire to join) but not the EU?
Maybe Trump could go to Russia and talk to putin?
I'll write him a check for this. One way. Hopefully they have a nice long conversation. 20 years to life.
