Pretty much all of the first generation of JPL and later NASA was built on using Nazis to develop aerospace technology to ~~kill the Korean and Vietnamese~~ fight the spread of communism. This is not surprising in the slightest. Doesn't help that the astronauts themselves almost always were war criminals.

Don't do the US dirty like that. Jack Parsons was a homegrown fascist.

[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 17 points 2 weeks ago

Jack Parsons is exactly who I was thinking of! I meant both literal NSDAP members and the esoteric fascists like Parsons, the ideological fathers of the JPL.

[–] blobjim@hexbear.net 9 points 1 week ago

In 1945, Parsons separated from Helen, after having an affair with her sister Sara; when Sara left him for L. Ron Hubbard,

LMAO

Do people even care what the second whitey on the moon thinks?

NGL my first reaction was “Buzz Aldrin? Didn’t he die a decade ago?”

[–] PolandIsAStateOfMind@lemmygrad.ml 5 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

I only know his name because there was a game named after him in 1993. Nobody ever knows the second guy.

[–] SSJ3Marx@hexbear.net 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Niel basically retired after his moon landing IIRC, but Buzz turned into a speaking engagement farmer and is on a lot of talk shows and podcasts and stuff.

It's the third guy whose name nobody knows.

[–] PolandIsAStateOfMind@lemmygrad.ml 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I never heard about Aldrin in Poland outside of specific topic of first Moon landing, even articles about space race rarily mention him. And that game was the first time (and one of not many) i heard about him and the only reason i remembered him since it was a good game.

SMDH shame that Buzz never made it back from the moon very tragic.

[–] EstraDoll@hexbear.net 29 points 2 weeks ago

your greatest achievement in life is being second place going to a lifeless rock. nobody cares about your political opinions, shut the fuck up nerd

[–] radio_free_asgarthr@hexbear.net 28 points 2 weeks ago

God damn it, why you doing this? Just enjoy your last years of life and remember that the Trump followers are the ones more likely to say that you faked going to the moon and are a deepstate plant.

[–] joaomarrom@hexbear.net 20 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Hey Buzz how was it, working with Stanley Kubrick? Was he a nice guy? How was it being on his moon film set?

[–] propter_hog@hexbear.net 10 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Not sure if this is a bit, but we've definitely been to the moon

[–] joaomarrom@hexbear.net 17 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

It was a bit, and I know for a fact mankind has been to the moon. I've been there myself on multiple occasions. I spread crystals of my frozen piss on the US flag.

Omg what is this gif from? It's perfect

[–] propter_hog@hexbear.net 2 points 1 week ago

It's pretty old. Earliest reference I can find is a 12-year-old reddit thread on r/WTF. Apparently he was one of many people holding a flag and shaking it to make it look like it's waving, but the zoom makes it look... different.

[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 11 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Guy who simultaneously believes humans have never gone to the moon, but also believes that when we did, there were aliens there.

[–] determinism2@hexbear.net 10 points 2 weeks ago

It's called a multiverse and all the cool kids are doing it.

A half-Century ago, it was an honor to serve my country in the effort to put a human being on the Moon. I am proud of what we accomplished then and I have dedicated my life to the pursuit of an enduring human presence in space – it is a calling that runs through every fiber of my being. Over time, I have seen our government’s approach to space wax and wane. But under the first Trump Administration, I was impressed to see how human space exploration was elevated as a policy of high importance again.

Under President Trump’s first term, America saw a revitalized interest in Space, and his Administration reignited national efforts to get back to the Moon, and push on to Mars. The Trump Administration also reinstituted the National Space Council, and our Nation’s defense was enhanced with the creation of the U.S. Space Force – increasingly important as space becomes a contested domain.

At the same time, I have been enthused and excited by the great advancements in the private sector space economy, led by visionaries like @elonmusk. These are concrete accomplishments that align with my concerns and America’s policy priorities. America is facing serious and difficult challenges both at home and abroad. The Presidency requires clarity in judgement, decisiveness, and calm under pressure that few have a natural ability to manage, or the life experience to successfully undertake.

It is a job where decisions are made that routinely involve American lives – some urgently but not without thought. The job requires sober analysis of frightening scenarios, and the instinct to lead with resolve. From the skies over Korea in air-to-air combat to navigating, landing, and walking on the Moon, I appreciate this kind of pressure. I know what it is like to have to make these kinds of decisions, with firmness and follow-through. In this election, we have a choice and we all have one vote.

For some, the choice may not be easy – but in times of uncertainty real leaders are most needed – to guide and inspire a people, to push through the noise, recognize what really matters, and accomplish missions critical to all citizens. Most Americans rightly consider it an honor to cast their vote for a leader they believe will best serve the nation.

For me, for the future of our country, to meet enormous challenges, and for the proven policy accomplishments above, I believe we are best served by voting for @realDonaldTrump. I wholeheartedly endorse him for President of the United States. Godspeed President Trump, and God Bless the United States of America.

idk what tf he's talking about with trump being clear headed but it is kind of funny that he is a single issue voter for the space force. We found the only voters it appeals to: cold war astronauts
