For those of you wondering what all the fuss is about, here's a quick introduction to the app.

Yes, it’s yet another app for Lemmy, but based heavily on the mature but now abandoned Lemmur project, with a few updates to make it run with the current API and some minor changes to the UI.

Written in Flutter, so it is very multi-platform. We currently have builds available for testing for Android and iOS (also running on iPad and Macs [Apple Silicon only for the moment]). Brave souls can try building it for Linux or Windows and report back on their experiences!

Preview it on iOS at TestFlight or on Android at GitHub.

The source is released under GPL 2.0 and is available at GitHub for inspection, download, build, issue logging and contributions, so go and get it!

Features:

  • Fully featured for end users: posting and commenting fully complete.
  • Sorting and UI customisation options.
  • Light Mode, Dark Mode, System Mode.
  • Multiple accounts on multiple servers.
  • Bookmark your favourite posts and comments.
  • Localisation (work in progress).
  • Full search support (posts, comments, users, communities).
  • Support for direct messaging.

And here's a few screenshots:

Been enjoying it so far.

You never realize how nice it is to be able to swipe to dismiss an image until you can’t do it anymore.

Keep up the good work!

Just installed it for Android and it already feels so much better than the mobile website or Jerboa. Thanks for the work, I'll be following the development of the app!

Liftoff is by far the best Lemmy app I've tried on Android. The UI is beautiful, and doesn't feel generic like others. Seems quite stable. Now available on Play Store. I'm really enjoying it!

I've noticed that the super script, spoiler and postscript markup isn't actually working on the app. The buttons in the formatting bar work, but they don't do the thing in the actual post.

^Superscript^

spoilerSpoiler

~Postscript~

I had noticed this for spoiler, thanks for the heads up on the other tags. Will take a look

I have a question that might be right to ask here, idk.

My account is on lemmy.world.

Ive added lemmy.ml and a few other instances.

I have subscribed to a few communities on lemmy.world, but when i try to do the same for communities on other instances I've added, it says i need to be logged in to that instance. I thought part of the way this worked was only needing one account to interact with all federated instances? Can somebody help me wrap my head around this? Strictly mobile user

What happens when you swipe sideways in the app?

[–] Richie@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm going through and literally downloading and testing every app for Lemmy, and Liftoff is really cool so far. One thing I've noticed is direct image uploading; are images hosted on Imgur, or somewhere else? And is direct video uploading being considered?

[–] poplargrove@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

They appear to be uploaded to the instance your acccount is on. The URL for the image shows up after you choose the image when making a post.

[–] Richie@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Can other instances see it?

[–] Solo@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

This is working great on Android. I don't even want to touch the website anymore. No refresh issue either!

[–] MutatedBass@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

The Android app is really nice. It's cool to be able to view posts from Beehaw and Lemmy.world in the same feed.

[–] hollywoodhoogle@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Looks amazing. Need any help testing?

[–] BoaPirate@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

you can install it with testflight

Would love more help! Lots of enhancements and bugs are logged in our issue tracker:

Thank you very much!

It looks like one of the most mature Lemmy apps on iOS.

As far as I see, it’s the only one currently, that allows to copy the text of the post and the text of the comments. That helps very much with the possibility to translate the text of the post or the comments, by the way.

[–] liftoff@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Thanks, you've prompted me to add an enhancement request to look at adding translation into the app.

[–] domage@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Thank you so much! This is quite a unique feature that was implemented in Apollo, and it really helped me in my interatctions with international communities. I haven't seen a single Lemmy client that supports this yet.

[–] wakest@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 year ago

Only runs on Apple Silicon Macs it seems (so the vast majority of macs it doesn't run on currently)

[–] domesticstreetcat@feddit.ch 1 points 1 year ago

Lemmur was amazing so thank the gods for Liftoff!

[–] sollymay@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Would love a TestFlight code here as well. Can help you test and if I get some time and read the codebase even contribute from time to time 😅

[–] theredjag@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

The test flight links all tell me beta testers aren’t being accepted. Is there a new link that I can use to join?

Edit: never mind, found the latest link in the latest release post

Isn't this exactly like Lemmynade? Which one of them copied the code? The interface is identical down to every single animation.

[–] nieceandtows@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

They both are forks of Lemmur, an old open source Lemmy client

[–] rgr7353@infosec.pub 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

They‘ve joined forces and working together now.

[–] StoicLime@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)
[–] zachatrocity@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Dev of Lemmynade here! Michael (dev of Limbo) and I have joined forces! We had both resurrected an old abandoned app called lemmur.

[–] wakest@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

So Lemmynade and Limbo are no longer and you are both working on Liftoff now?

[–] zachatrocity@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

That is correct!

[–] StoicLime@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Great, looking forward to it!

[–] nihilist_hippie@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

I got it yesterday and I love it! Great job!

[–] MeetInPotatoes@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Why when I go to install this in TestFlight does it say Limbo for Lemmy?! Version 0.0.1

[–] trouser_mouse@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Awesome work - really good!

I feel silly asking, but question for anyone - where do you see your saved / bookmarked posts and comments?

[–] Spitz@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Go to your profile. It's in the top left corner.

[–] trouser_mouse@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago
[–] Reverendender@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

I can’t login on iOS. It just spins. Do I need a TOTP 2FA Token?

[–] SheeEttin@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The subscribed view says there are no posts, which definitely isn't true. Is this just not implemented yet? Or is it because lemmy.world isn't on 0.18 yet?

[–] ALEJANDROJ19@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Looks amazing, can't wait to try it for Android!
