MODERATORS

Sup everyone. Hope you're all enjoying the season of decorative gourds.

I know a lot of you just use mobile apps (yay, mobile apps!), but for the few that also use a web browser, I've been slowly rolling out alternative "front ends". The normal URL (https://sub.wetshaving.social) has the default front end. It is honestly pretty good, if not a tad dated.

Most recently we brought online https://old.wetshaving.social, which is designed to look like old.reddit.com. Even though I'm used to that layout from real-reddit, I'm still finding it a bit lacking for Lemmy, especially from a moderator point of view.

Next, we want to introduce the Alexandrite front end. @sahenders@sub.wetshaving.social already uses this, accessible from https://alexandrite.app/sub.wetshaving.social. Feel free to check it out there until we get ours behind https.

Anyway, we want to run our own instance of Alexandrite, which will be locked to our lemmy server, simplifying the experience for people like @sahenders@wetshaving.social.

All that is to say, we need a URL to put it behind.

So far, the suggestions are:

gem.wetshaving.social - Alexandrite is named after a gem on the devs wife's ring, and of course there's the GEM connection with our hobby.
alx.wetshaving.social
new.wetshaving.social - simply the opposite of old.wetshaving.social

Please leave your ideas, good or bad. Often our worst ideas turn out to be great, so don't be shy.

THANKS!

Seconding the seconding (not sure whether this is thirding or fourthing, though)

[–] djundjila@wetshaving.social 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Isn't it well accepted that seconding is the first step of a Fibonacci sequence and is followed by a second seconding +1, then a thirding +2, fifthing +3, eighthing +5, etc?

My bad - this is obviously the correct answer

I really like gem, but don't want to make it seem like it's geared towards single edge (like https://tost3.com)

I don't think there'd be any confusion, but something to consider.

+1, firm support of that option too πŸ‘πŸ»

Often our worst ideas turn out to be great, so don’t be shy.

You asked for it! What about:

  • ptolmy.wetshaving.social (because Alexander the Great)
  • cleopatra.wetshaving.social (because Ptolmy)
  • nile.wetshaving.social (because Alexandria)
  • egypt.wetshaving.social (because Alexandria)
  • serapis.wetshaving.social (because Alexandria + rite)
  • koptic.wetshaving.social (because Alexandria + rite)

I rest my case.

Wow, lots of ideas here!

[–] DaveWave94@sub.wetshaving.social 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I support the serapis and koptic since that makes it sound like we're some secret society cult lodge that tries to summon the ancient wetshaving gods πŸ›πŸ™‚β€β†•οΈ

With a big picture of a masonic razor, the branding is complete!

ngl, I'd get behind a Lemmy-only straight razor group buy if instead of a mascot it included an etching of Shub-Niggurath, the Allmother

[–] PorkButtsNTaters666@sub.wetshaving.social 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Same here, though I'm not sure that Shub-Niggurath would make for a good etching. If you want a mother goddess, maybe the sign of Tanit?

I think for a Lovecraft fan like me, the Necronomicon Sigil would be way more interesting πŸ˜‰

  • imperator.wetshaving.social : Alexander the Great was the emperor/imperator of Rome, plus the Alexandrite frontend reminds me of the colour of the Death Star in Star Wars; famously a stronghold of the Empire
  • gladius.wetshaving.social : a word for both the sword of roman foot soldiers as well as later becoming the general latin word for "sword". Straight and safety razors are sharp too, the connection should be enough

Ok I rest my case. You asked for the worst ideas, so here you go πŸ˜…

These are certainly some ideas!
