"cosmic horror... is a subgenre of horror fiction and weird fiction that emphasizes the horror of the unknowable and incomprehensible more than gore or other elements of shock... themes of cosmic dread, forbidden and dangerous knowledge, madness, non-human influences on humanity, religion and superstition, fate and inevitability, and the risks associated with scientific discoveries... the sense that ordinary life is a thin shell over a reality that is so alien and abstract in comparison that merely contemplating it would damage the sanity of the ordinary person, insignificance and powerlessness at the cosmic scale..."

Many modern Lovecraftian movies like to unveil their cosmic horror slowly. William Eubank’s 2020 Underwater takes this technique to the next level. What first comes off as a thriller, Underwater ultimately has all the markers for a classic eldritch nightmare. The claustrophobia serves as an existential dread and Cthulhu himself makes an appearance. Kristen Stewart stars as Norah Price, an underwater engineer working at a mysterious drilling compound. When the compound suffers catastrophic failure from an unseen force, Norah gathers the survivors and embarks on a mission to find escape pods. Underwater slipped under the radar, but for a film that makes several bold twists on classic Lovecraftian staples, it deserves more attention for innovation at the very least...

It's not straight lovecraftian, but if you love really weird alien horror shit I'd highly recommend the animated show Scavengers Reign.

I need to finish this. I watched a couple episodes and really enjoyed the crazy alien world, but the whole plot being driven without any dialog or anything made it feel super slow to me, idk. And it’s not just the dialog thing because I was hooked on Primal after the second episode or so.

It's a show don't tell type of world building, yes. Not strictly what you want to watch when you're overly tired, otherwise you'll miss everything.

Like an Abyss reboot, with a darker twist.

I even watched this a second time.

I have conflicting feelings about this one. The plot and the photography was amazing but something in the direction and the cast simply didn't stuck with me. Still a good syfy horror.

I really liked this movie, it is fairly light on plot or character development but what it does well it does really well and that is ratchet up the tension and escalation of the creature reveals until finally revealing the classic lovecraftian horror in its final act.

This film is great. Would have been even better without T J Miller's character in it but, hey, never mind.
