So his defense is to just say "not guilty - I didn't do anything wrong"? I mean, that's a perfectly valid plea to start with (as opposed to "guilty - I totally did that stuff"), but it's not a legal defense. If all his lawyers can muster during the trial is "our client says that he didn't do this and it's all a witch hunt" then he'll be going to prison for a long time.

I think the link is to the wrong update. If you scroll down there is another article stating he's going to say the boxes were planted.

Yep, here's the relevant update:

Trump now claims classified documents were ‘planted’ in Mar-a-Lago boxes in wild arraignment morning rant Former president Donald Trump has now claimed that the classified documents found at Mar-a-Lago were “planted” in the boxes after they were obtained by the Department of Justice.

In a Truth Social rant, Mr Trump lashed out at Special Counsel Jack Smith on the morning of the former president’s arraignment at a Miami federal courthouse.

“This is the Thug, overturned consistently and unanimously in big cases, that Biden and his CORRUPT Injustice Department stuck on me. He’s a Radical Right Lunatic and Trump Hater, as are all his friends and family, who probably ‘planted’ information in the ‘boxes’ given to them. They taint everything that they touch, including our Country, which is rapidly going to HELL!” Mr Trump wrote on Tuesday morning.

"Radical Right Lunatic" I am so confused haha

[–] TechyDad@beehaw.org 3 points 1 year ago

That confused me too. Is Trump trying to pretend he's a progessive now? "You can't arrest 'MAGA Trump' because I'm 'Progressive Trump' now. I'm a totally different person!"

It's projection. The purpose of this rant is to motivate radical right thugs to take care of his problem for him. Stochastic terrorism is all the rage now.

Don't worry, so is he.

That makes more sense. Well, at least so far as anything Trump says makes sense. I don't envy his lawyers trying to prove that the FBI came in and planted all those documents and that all the text messages and audio that they got from all the Trump employees' phones were faked as well.

It's easy for Trump to do this in a rally. He just yells "FAKE NEWS" and nobody asks him for proof. In court, though, his lawyers will be required to give factual evidence proving that the DOJ made everything up.

I wonder if this is why his recent lawyers quit and others are staying away. He's telling them "just lie in court and say it was all planted." Even the worst lawyer will know that this is a Very Bad Idea™.

Yeah I don't get the title. How is pleading "Not Guilty", which is what we expected, a wild defense?

[–] SquishyPandaDev@yiffit.net 5 points 1 year ago

It's the way he said it. Yes pleading "Not Guilty" is how things go. Trump makes it seem like after he says it, the judge will be like "understandable, all charges dropped."

That's hilarious and yes that is straight up going to be his defense strategy

Considering I don't think he has a lawyer (and certainly none actually competent), any defense is likely to be wild.

[–] SquishyPandaDev@yiffit.net 6 points 1 year ago

That's the thing with Trump, lawyer or not, he is going to say stupid shit.

[–] ZapBeebz@beehaw.org 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

He's gonna end up with a public defender, isn't he?

[–] TechyDad@beehaw.org 2 points 1 year ago

No. He should defend himself. After all, he's got the bigliest brain. Big strong men have come up to him, tears in their eyes, saying "Sir, you should totally defend yourself in court!"

[–] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 year ago

I was just reading about this. He still has two lawyers.

Trump and his lawyers were looking for lawyers that actually have trial experience with this matter. But they couldn't find any that were willing or able to, they also specifically wanted one that would be able to deal with protected information. But none of the lawyers willing to work with them were able to obtain a security clearance.
