Streamed it first to see if it was worth buying on disc, it is.

They have a really cool commentary feature where the image is shrunk to a 4:3 image so they can split it top and bottom.

The top image is the film as presented, the bottom image is the raw footage before visual effects were applied.

It lets you see how much of the film was digital and how much was practical. Complete with commentary.

This cut is apparently the first of its kind, too! Hopefully this sets a new trend.

I’m honestly shocked the likes of Lord of the Rings or Marvel movies with lots of mocap didn’t already do this.

I'm definitely looking forward to watching that.

I'd advise watching the 4K first then watching the split screen... but then that goes for any commentary track.

I watched it in the cinema, so may save the 4k for a rewatch.

Is this only on the 4K disc or also on the blu-ray?

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

It's only on the Blu Ray, the 4K is only the theatrical release.

Ok, thanks! I think I will pick up the "regular" blu-ray then, this extra sounds really intriguing!

I think this is the first time anyone has released the entire film in its raw state. Avatar had three versions on the disc, theatrical, extended and an even longer cut but the extra scenes in the third version were still in a raw animatic state.

Sin City also released the full film in its green screen version but sadly, it was sped up. The entire film runs through in just twelve minutes.

Acting in 1964: Practical sets, props, and costumes, the give and take of acting with other actors

Acting in 2024: Wear a spandex laser tag outfit with a GoPro pointed at your spotted face and run around an empty blue warehouse

A surprising amount of the film was actually shot on location. The screengrabs here don't do it justice.

When I poster this at the time there was a video showing clips of this that isn't showing now, but that clearly shows all the main cast acting together, so the blue screen studio wasn't empty.
