Image is of China's ambassador to Afghanistan, Zhao Sheng, meeting Taliban Prime Minister Hasan Akhund in September 2023.

I know the Rambo title card is a hoax.

The COTW was chosen in the wake of the aborted sequel to the attempted assassination of Trump being performed by a guy who is VERY enthusiastic about Ukraine, to the point of trying to sneak Afghan soldiers into Ukraine by setting up a house in Pakistan to house them and then further transport them. He also apparently offered to send thousands of Afghan soldiers to Haiti to help them combat gang violence. Whomst among us doesn't have the numbers of thousands of Afghan soldiers on speed-dial. Do you reckon there's a group chat?

Anyway, while there is still no official recognition of the Taliban's government by any country, China has taken a different course than the late USSR and the US - forming economic in-roads, rather than trying their own invasion. This has been a big boon for the struggling country, with various mines and oil and agriculture deals helping keep things barely afloat. A total disintegration of the social fabric of Afghanistan is not in the interest of any of the powers that border it - China, Pakistan, and Iran, with Russia not too far away - so an interesting dynamic of helping-without-official-recognition has been established. I wonder who will be the first country to fully recognize them?

The COTW (Country of the Week) label is designed to spur discussion and debate about a specific country every week in order to help the community gain greater understanding of the domestic situation of often-understudied nations. If you've wanted to talk about the country or share your experiences, but have never found a relevant place to do so, now is your chance! However, don't worry - this is still a general news megathread where you can post about ongoing events from any country.

The Country of the Week is Afghanistan! Feel free to chime in with books, essays, longform articles, even stories and anecdotes or rants. More detail here.

Sources:

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.
Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.
Simplicius, who publishes on Substack. Like others, his political analysis should be soundly ignored, but his knowledge of weaponry and military strategy is generally quite good.

Iran Reaffirms their Support to Nicolas Maduro and the Venezuelan Revolution - Telesur English

Article

Iran’s Defense Minister, Brigadier General Aziz Nasirzadeh, said that the change of government in Venezuela will not alter Tehran’s policy towards Caracas. During a meeting in Tehran with the Venezuelan Minister of Transport, Ramón Velázquez, Nasirzadeh emphasized: «The Islamic Republic of Iran will continue to support with all its forces the legitimate and legal government of Mr Nicolás Maduro as it has done in the past».

The Iranian minister highlighted the potential of bilateral relations, expressing his desire to strengthen cooperation between both nations. Nasirzadeh also recalled the fundamental role of late Iranian president Seyed Ebrahim Raisi and late Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez Frías in establishing a new chapter in Iranian-Venezuelan relations.

«Mr Chavez was a pioneer of the anti-imperialist struggle and left a vast legacy for Venezuela, which today is at the forefront of the fight against imperialism and global hegemony», said Nasirzadeh. The Iranian minister expressed his confidence that unity between the government and the Venezuelan people, along with the vigilance of the Armed Forces and the country’s leadership, will thwart any conspiracy against Venezuela.

Nasirzadeh stressed the importance of the joint commission for economic cooperation as a key mechanism to strengthen coordination and alliance between the two countries in the face of common enemies.

Minister Velázquez conveyed the greetings of President Maduro to the Iranian leader, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, and to the Iranian President and Defense Minister. Velázquez also pointed to the existence of common enemies using various tools against both nations, mentioning recent cyber attacks on infrastructure in both countries and in Lebanon.

Relations between Iran and Venezuela, which date back to the 1960s, have strengthened significantly in recent years. Both countries support each other in their sovereign development and in the face of US pressures, having signed various agreements in sectors such as energy, science, oil, defense, culture, economy and food.

(Colombian President) Gustavo Petro urges base to prepare for revolution over silent coup fears - Colombia Report

President ordered army not to take up weapons against the people.

Article

Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro mobilized his base over fears that far-right opponents of his government seek to oust him from power.

At events that were organized for community journalists and political activists, Petro called on his supporters to start a revolution in the event of a silent coup.

The president stepped up his public performances in the week ahead of a key meeting of the National Electoral Council (CNE) in which magistrates decide whether or not to charge Petro and his 2022 campaign team over alleged spending violations.

The president has deemed this investigation as fraudulent, in violation of his presidential immunity and an attempted silent coup by his opponents on the far-right.

Critics of the president have called him paranoid, but Petro stressed that similarly dubious investigations by administrative authorities have already removed three of the government coalition’s elected lawmakers from Congress.

"All of you, coming from all the regions, we cannot go to sleep, because they want to put us to sleep. If they unleash the coup d’état, which is not with soldiers, it is not with generals as with Pinochet, but with [men in] ties that they are going to unleash it, with illegitimate decisions, the coup d’état will be answered by the people with a revolution." - President Gustavo Petro

At an event organized for political activists, the president said that “I have ordered the Army of Colombia and the National Police, the Air Force and the Navy not to raise a single weapon against the people who demand democracy.”

Petro said that the eventual revolution in his support “will be peaceful, but overwhelming: the neckties and the mafia on one side and the entire Colombian people on the other.”

"It will not be a war, no. It will be a massive popular celebration, and that is why we need you, as the leadership of the popular movement in Colombia, young people, women, workers, indigenous, ethnic, LGBTI, everything." - President Gustavo Petro

At an event for community journalists that was held last week, Petro said that the attempted coup would start on Monday, when the CNE is scheduled to make a decision on whether to formally charge the president and his election team.

Venezuela: National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez thanked former presidential candidate Edmundo Gonzalez for recognizing the will of the popular powers. He showed photos of Gonzalez signing the recognition of the national powers.

President of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, showed evidence of the meeting he held, together with the Executive Vice President, Delcy Rodríguez, with the former presidential candidate Edmundo González Urrutia.

At that meeting, González Urrutia gave the two officials a letter in which he expressed his recognition and respect for the Public Powers that make up the Venezuelan State, as well as his recognition of results that made President Maduro the winner in the election last July.

Seems like Gonzalez doesn't want to be Guaido 2.0 and betrayed Maria Corina Machado and the US?

Do the russians in charge really believe their own nonsense about traditional values compared to the west. Because it seems that they just picked a side in the culture war bs and got entangled into it instead of using those idiots to destabilize the west. Maybe it's a bit of both.

Honduran People Reject Coup Attempts Against President Xiomara Castro - Telesur

Article

In the Honduran capital Tegucigalpa, the people rally supporting the president Xiomara Castro after the recent coup attempts directed from the United States and activated by the ambassador of that country in Honduras, Laura Dogu against the Castro’s government.

The call comes after the president stated in early September that a plan is underway to destroy her government, while assuring that the peace and internal security of the Republic was at risk due to the American interference in the centromericano country.

“I call upon the citizens of the resistance and the people in general to mobilize in front of the Presidential House to show our determined support for the courageous struggle that our president, Xiomara Castro, is waging for the independence and dignity of Honduras,” published by former President Manuel Zelaya in X citing his supporters.

Zelaya also called the population to firmly oppose “those who promote and organize a new coup.”

As it was scheduled, the people gathered in front of the Presidential House to express their solidarity with the president Castro and their rejection to the coup attempt and the North American interventionism.

Norwegian citizen linked to the pagers that exploded in Lebanon (Norwegian state media NRK, machine translated)

According to several media, the company is registered in Bulgaria's capital Sofia and is owned by a person with Norwegian citizenship.

The webpage of the company the Norwegian is linked to contained a presentation of various technical and advisory services as late as around 11 o'clock on Thursday. It has since been emptied of content and now only displays a message about missing content.

PST [Norwegian Police Security Service] is aware of the claims from various international media that a Norwegian-owned company is said to have been involved in the sale of pagers. PST cannot confirm this information, nor can we provide further comments on the matter, communications director Trond Hugubakken writes to NRK.

Several Norwegian media outlets have tried to get in contact with him. He's registered on an address in Oslo, and was apparently (and still is I think?) on an oversea business trip when the terror attacks in Lebanon happened. One newspaper (VG) went to his address and knocked on his door. They got no response. When they asked his neighbors, they were told that they haven't seen the man since the summer vacation in July.

It was the man's own employer (in Norway) who reported him to PST:

The man's employer informs VG that he was called by an American journalist sent on Wednesday evening and made allegations about the employee's connection to the company in Bulgaria.

"I checked some links and was able to see the same as he had put. When I receive information that apparently looks serious in such an inflamed case, it was natural for me to notify PST immediately," says the man's employer

edit: from CBS, revealing the name of both the company and the Norwegian owner (Rinson Jose):

Separate records reviewed by CBS News show that Norta Global Ltd. was registered as a company in Bulgaria in April 2022, with its sole owner listed as a Norwegian citizen named Rinson Jose. Global Norta is described on its website — which has since been taken offline — as offering a range of services "from outsourcing, consulting, tech and payment integration, analysis, promotion of techno products and services, as well as the estimation and processing of relevant commercial transactions.

In the annals of this present era, when Heaven’s favor once bestowed upon the Empress of the European Realms, Ursula von der Leyen, now appears to wane, the signs of discord multiply in alarming fashion. Not since the distant days when rulers were cast from their thrones by the wrath of nature have the rivers of Europe surged so violently. The floods that have swept across the lands, from Austria to Hungary to Poland, have wrought devastation.

These torrents, swollen with the rains of Heaven, have overwhelmed the great rivers—the Danube, the Morava, and beyond—bursting their banks, as if in a dire warning. Villages lay submerged, and cities were brought to their knees by waters that left most of their homes underwater. Bridges, those vital arteries of the realm, have collapsed, and the call for a state of natural disaster echoes across the land.

Surely, this is more than a mere misfortune; it is a sign from the Heavens. The Empress von der Leyen, though resolute in her proclamations of European solidarity, has lost the sacred Mandate of Heaven. Even now, the rulers of the East and the West scramble in panic. The governor of the hungarian province Viktor Orbán, was compelled to abandon his parliamentary duties and the teutonic general Olaf Scholz schemes the downfall by marching his army on the prohibitively expensive city of Brussels the seat of the Empresses power. In these omens, it is clear: Nature herself cries out, demanding a renewal of leadership that may once again align with the will of Heaven

The Empress, once entrusted with the sacred duty to guide her people, now finds herself beset by calamity on all sides, for the favor of Heaven does not waver lightly, and the storms above reflect the discontent below. As the rivers of Europe rage, drowning cities and villages alike, it is not only the Empress von der Leyen who must look to the heavens in fear of her fate. In these times of great upheaval, the court of Europe is rife with whispers of challengers, each seeking to seize the Mandate of Heaven and bring forth a new era of rule.

Reporting from the Red Turban headquarters planning the fall of the EU Sky and the rise of a red one, there will be prosperity under the heavens.

Wrt to Israel and the Middle East I would love to see a solution where both Jews and Muslims would have equal rights in a non-apartheid non-genocidal country. But the way Israel is the existence of Israel and the existence of the Middle East as a whole (not just Palestine) are now mutually exclusive scenarios. Truly depressing. I dont think in the short term Israel or the US is going anywhere but in the long run I can't see how Israel can exist as it is

At this point there are two interpretations to the events up until now:

Bloomer: The Axis of Resistance is carrying out an attritional war to bleed Israel dry, and all of Israel's acts of terrorism are done out of desperation due to the fact that they still have not been able to destroy Hamas. Israel is engaging in terrorist attacks mostly just as a way to make themselves feel beter, but it doesn't change how fucked up their economy and society is now.

Doomer: Israel is winning handily, and is on the path to successfully completing their genocide. All of their acts of terrorism are done to show how many cards they have up their sleeve, how they are capable and willing to perform actions at a rapid pace that the resistance cannot keep up with. Iran are paper tigers, and the axis of resistance is so afraid of Israel's power that they are too scared to muster a response. Even worse with the U.S. dedicated to backing Israel no matter what. Israel has effectively already won, and all of their actions up until now have just been them playing with their food. (coincidentally this is a view that smug Zionazis seem to share)

I think this is the issue when it comes to the long-term planning as opposed to short-term actions. Long-term, you're likely not going to see the results of it for a painfully long time, and it feels like nothing's really changed. Meanwhile short-term actions might not end up panning out in the long run, but they sure do make it feel like you're winning by constantly making headlines and being very in-your-face.

Come on Osint twitter, stop with the bs.

Just read some account claiming Iran is going to stop Indian weapons shipments to Israel. No mention of it anywhere else.

Iran may occasionally dunk on India but that's it, they very much would prefer to have decent relations.
