Self Improvement

274 readers
1 users here now

A community which focusses on improving yourself. This can be in many different ways - from improving physical health or appearance, to improving mental health, creating better habits, overcoming addictions, etc.

While material circumstances beyond our control do govern much of our daily lives, people do have agency and choices to make, whether that is as "simple" as disciplining yourself to not doomscroll, to as complex as recreating yourself to have many different hobbies and habits.

This is not a place where all we do is talk about improving "productivity" (in a workplace context) and similar terms and harmful lifestyles like "grindset". Self-improvement here is intended to make you a generally better and happier person, as well as a better communist, and any other roles you may have in your life.

Rules and guidelines:

  1. Posts should be about self-improvement. This is obviously a wide category, and can range from advice, to finding resources, to self-posts about needing to improve in a certain area, or how you have improved, and many other things.

  1. Use content warnings when discussing difficult subjects.

  1. Do not make medical decisions solely because of a discussion you have had with any person here (e.g. whether to take or not take medications; diagnoses; etc.) as we do not vet people. All medical problems should be discussed with a real-life medical professional.

  1. Do not post harmful advice here. If this is seen, then please report it and we shall remove it. If you are unsure about whether it's precisely harmful advice or not but feel uneasy about it, please report it anyway.

  1. Do not insult other users and their lifestyles or their habits (unless they ask, I suppose). This is a place for self-improvement. Critique and discussion about a course of action is encouraged over shit-flinging. Don't talk down to people.

Hello comrades and welcome to the first improvement megathread of September! bonfire

As usual, some discussion ideas:

  • How was your August?
  • Do you have any plans or goals for September?

mystery-emote

  • Do you want to share something you've done in the previous week? Everything counts, nothing is too small.
  • Do you have any streaks? For example, "sober for one day." Feel free to post your streak every day in this thread.
  • If you don't have a continuous streak, did you manage to abstain from something for a day or more?
  • Did you come across some useful information or resource that might help others?

Poster caption: "The plans of the party - my plans!"

Wishing you a great September! solidarity

I jogged on the treadmill twice this week, which I hate, but it was easier the second time. And the second time, my veins stopped itching like hell.

I feel better already, but I feel awful while doing it.

Runners high is a myth as far as I'm concerned but then again I only do 6 minute intervals so emilie-shrug

This past week I went on vacation and logged out for the entire week (except a few visits to the general megathread).

This was the most logged off I've been in a long time. It was only possible since I was on an island, without my laptop and without my phone for most of the day. This is the first time in a long time that I didn't spend all day thinking about the horrible shit happening in the world.

It was great and I wish I could do that more often. But it's almost impossible to replicate that environment. It only worked because I was on vacation and was able to just chill on the beach all day.

In regards to the monthly review, last month was hot as hell so I fell off in a lot of my habits. The plan for September is to pick up where I left off before summer, especially with exercise. It would be great if I could resume runnning twice every week in September. unity

My first week back to school was fully successful.

My workouts are starting to get easier which means I'm making progress but I also need to switch it up soon. I'm going to start running more rather than walking. I hate how my body juggles up and down in space but I gotta get over that shit or Communism will never happen.

I'm reading some good fiction. Currently enjoying the cyberpunk classic "Snow Crash". Never read it but pretty much everything i like has ripped something from it, and it's good to see the thing that all the things you like stole from.

Reading more comics. Still doing my Hellboy and BPRD but I just started reading Saga and it rules.

Working on my indie game projects. Working in C++ and also working with Godot. I'm just trying to learn as much as possible and I think I'm going to make some great someday.

Looking for a new job, this MEGACORP is sinking fast and I need to jump ship.

All is well and I'm genuinely and sincerely happy with the progress I have made, I am making, and I truly think we are all gonna make it.

I can’t remember much about last week. I’ve been mildly sick for most of it and just generally haven’t done much which is unfortunately reasonable. I hate being sick, I hate feeling stuck at home. Feeling of slowly creeping impending doom.

Alas, still focusing on the extremely good life-changing things happening on my end, so most of my other activities are on hold.

However, I do continue working on the Blender model. I expect to begin texturing this week.

I finally bought some 5lbs dumbbells to try to build up strength around my sternum and try to fight chronic pain. Going well so far...

August overall was pretty eh. First 2.5 weeks were freaking amazing in so far as my workouts. Probably the most consistent I've been, which is especially goo since I started a new program.. But it fell apart towards the end because I've been at work so much and I usually sacrifice something to try and preserve energy. Unfortunately that was going to the gym. I did continue working out at home, but usually for a short time and it feel like its easy to fall back and sit for way too long. I'll probably start going again on Tuesday since I'll be on the tail end of a stretch of working for 13 of the last 14 days.

I'm starting to see some gains though and my arms are starting to look more defined and my legs are feeling firmer.

Aside from all the working I've been doing lately I've just had another up and down month mentally. Had some interpersonal issues with someone at work and things still feel a bit off. And I got contacted by an old high school acquaintance who wanted to hang out. And while I've been feeling a need to hang out with people more of late, I just don't feel like hanging out with someone that I don't really vibe with like that.

For the next month I just want to get back on my workout routine and more progress. Not sure if I'll get a chance to hit my goal for when I wanted to hit it, but I'm going to give it my all.

Over the past month or so I've been getting a handle of fasting for weight loss. I think I'm starting to come to terms with hunger and when I do eat it's a healthier amount than what I used to eat. That combined with eating more veggies I think I'm really building something more long term. Before the year ends I really hope I can do 1 pull up, not a lot but with how much I weigh it'll be a big milestone. Went back to the gym after some shit these past weeks and I'm feeling tired and hungry but I know I'm gonna make it.
