In June, large anti-government protests shook Kenya. President Ruto and his parliament were attempting to pass the new Finance Bill 2024, which, among other things, would have hiked taxes on the population, with a 16% sales tax on bread and a 25% duty on cooking oil, as well as new taxes on financial transanctions and vehicle ownership. There would also have been levies on women's sanitary products and digital goods such as phones, among other measures affecting hospitals.

Hundreds of protestors stormed the parliament building and began to tear the place apart. Shortly afterwards, on June 26th, Ruto announced that he was withdrawing the bill, calling the tens of deaths and hundreds of injuries "unfortunate". A couple weeks later, Ruto then fired his entire cabinet (aside from his foreign minister) and communicated his wish to the nation to form a "broad-based government". Funnily enough, in July, it was announced that the majority of positions were to be filled by members of the old cabinet, while other positions were taken by members of the opposition. This has prompted scepticism among the population, including calls to resign, but there haven't (yet) been any major anti-government events to pressure this outcome. The Communist Party of Kenya has been working to get some of their comrades back after they were abducted by the police during the protest period, and have otherwise supported the protests against Ruto.

The measures in the bill were strongly encouraged by the IMF. Kenya's debt is currently around $80 billion, of which about 10% is owed to China for infrastructure projects (such as a railway linking the capital, Nairobi, to the port city of Mombasa, as well as 11,000 kilometers of road throughout the country). The rest is owed to a combination of the US, IMF, World Bank, and Saudi Arabia. More than half of government revenue is going towards repaying the debt - but despite these massive payments, it has only grown. The most recent round of IMF plundering (and the impetus for current events) began in 2021, when they offered a 38-month programme to "help" Kenya, which would involve the usual warfare on the poor and the dismemberment of any useful societal institutions.

The COTW (Country of the Week) label is designed to spur discussion and debate about a specific country every week in order to help the community gain greater understanding of the domestic situation of often-understudied nations. Israel-Palestine Conflict

If you have evidence of Israeli crimes and atrocities that you wish to preserve, there is a thread here in which to do so.

Russia-Ukraine Conflict

Examples of Ukrainian Nazis and fascists
Examples of racism/euro-centrism during the Russia-Ukraine conflict

Sources:

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful. Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.
On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.

https://t.me/gonzowarr ~ A big Russian commentator.
https://t.me/rybar ~ One of, if not the, biggest Russian telegram channels focussing on the war out there. Actually quite balanced, maybe even pessimistic about Russia. Produces interesting and useful maps.

https://t.me/boris_rozhin ~ Russian language.
https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a 'propaganda tax', if you don't believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.

Pro-Ukraine Telegram Channels:

Almost every Western media outlet.

just saw this is a news update from norwegian NRK (machine translated):

For the first time in two years, in the second quarter of this year, the EU countries imported more gas from Russia than from the USA, shows a study from the think tank Bruegel.

Compared to the previous quarter, imports from Russia still fell somewhat, but imports from the USA fell more, the study shows.

The EU still buys most gas from Norway. Russia was at the top until the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, when many EU countries cut off or bought much less Russian gas, writes NTB.

The study does not show which countries in the EU have stepped up imports. Official German statistics show that the EU's largest member state no longer buys gas from Russia.

sorry for not linking the study i'm on mobile and i'm lazy </3

Bolsonaro Supporters and Bolsonarist Politicians rn: oooaaaaaaauhhh

[–] Redcuban1959@hexbear.net 41 points 4 months ago (1 children)

The Brazilian Army opens an investigation into supporters of the Bolsonaro coup in the Armed Forces.

The opening of the military inquiry was a consequence of an investigation opened on the orders of the army commander, General Tomás Paiva

On Tuesday (27), the Brazilian Army opened a Military Police Inquiry (IPM) to investigate four soldiers for crimes related to the drafting of the coup manifesto entitled “Letter to the Army Commander from Senior Officers of the Brazilian Army”. The group wanted to set up a dictatorship under Bolsonaro in Brazil and tried to convince the army command to join the coup.

It is now well known that, at the time of these events, the Commander of the Army, General Freire Gomes, refused to take part in the Bolsonaro coup plot, threatened to arrest the head of the coup and prevented it from taking place. Realizing that they would not have the support of the Armed Forces for their plans, Jair Bolsonaro and his group, in a ridiculous mockery of Trumpist fascism, instigated the invasion and depredation of the National Congress, the Federal Supreme Court and the Planalto Palace.

The opening of the investigation was the result of an inquiry opened by the Army commander, General Tomás Paiva. The inquiry investigated the participation of 37 military personnel in the production, signing or dissemination of the letter. Of these, according to the Army, 26 were punished on the basis of the Army Disciplinary Regulations (RDE), including 12 colonels, 9 lieutenant colonels, 1 major, 3 lieutenants and 1 sergeant.

“X” did not indicate a legal representative to act in the company’s processes in Brazil, as determined by Minister Alexandre de Moraes. “We expect Minister Alexandre de Moraes to soon order the blocking of X in Brazil – simply because we did not comply with his illegal orders to censor his political opponents,” the company said in a statement.

Honduras Denounces Attempted Coup in Barracks

Article

Statements by the U.S. ambassador to Honduras fueled divisions in the Army. On Thursday morning, Honduran Foreign Affairs Minister Enrique Reina warned of an attempt to sow division within the Armed Forces following comments made by the U.S. Ambassador, Laura Dogu.

Honduran intelligence detected a plan to execute a “barracks coup” involving certain factions seeking to remove Chief of Staff Gen. Roosevelt Hernandez. The operation might have involved some military personnel organizing to challenge Hernandez’s authority, whom Dogu had linked to an alleged “narcotrafficker.”

Amid these tensions, Honduran President Xiomara Castro has intensified her efforts to preserve the unity and stability of the Armed Forces. She faces the challenge of maintaining cohesion at a critical moment, as the campaign for the primary elections, scheduled for April 2025, approaches.

Ambassador Dogu’s comments have also sparked a debate over the U.S.-Honduras extradition treaty, which could be used as a political tool to influence this Central American country’s internal affairs.

Specifically, there is fear that the treaty could be invoked to bring Gen. Hernandez or former President Manuel Zelaya Rosales to trial in the United States in an attempt to weaken the Free Party (LIBRE Party, a party made up by Zelaya supporters and former right-wings turned far-left), a leftist organization that brought Castro to the presidency in 2022 and is the favorite to win the next presidential elections on November 30, 2025.

Foreign interference from United States and its regional allies could be aimed at influencing the electoral process by using unfounded accusations to create uncertainty and undermine confidence in Honduran institutions.

“The U.S. interference and interventionism, as well as its intention to direct the politics of Honduras through its Embassy and other representatives, is intolerable,” President Castro wrote on social media.

“They attack, ignore and violate with impunity the principles and practices of international law, which promote respect for the sovereignty and self-determination of peoples, non-intervention and universal peace. Enough! Based on our Constitution and international treaties, I have ordered FM Reina to denounce the extradition treaty with the U.S.,” she added.
