There is no reason for us to expect public transit to be self-sustaining... it's neoliberal bullshit.

Transit is a service and it should be funded in a large part by provincial taxes.

Politicians like treating transit like a cruise. It would be weird if a cruise ship was losing money.

As someone in the tech space I'd say that one potential partial solution is for Translink to use/fund FOSS Hardware as a cheaper source for replacement parts

  • this could also be a universal collaborative funding project/proposal with other provinces and states
    • maybe Louis Rossman might also be interested in this as it would tie into the Right-to-Repair movement

god I really hope we don't lose Canada's best transit system, this is too close to home fuck

I would like to see it too, but I don't think there is currently in the FOSS sphere that is even remotely close to commercial availability or has the certified, turnkey type of solutions that the industry suppliers offer.
