It's Saturday, one of the best days of the week (for those of us who don't work weekends, anyway).

What's happening? Barbeque in the sun? Sheltering from an impending thunderstorm?

Just dragged myself out of bed at half nine, got the house to myself for probably only about half an hour but what a gloriously silent half hour it will be!

Then I don't think we really have any major plans today. Need to get to the shop for some embroidery floss, and also it's International Knit In Public Day today but honestly there's no meetups near us and I'm not sure I want to just go sit randomly in a park somewhere and get sunburned.

So tldr gonna veg here on the couch with the blinds drawn all day and hide from the sun, it's gonna be mint.

Hope everyone's having a great Saturday, it's sweltering here, 30 degrees! Probably not the right place to ask this, but I don't want to create a top level post. I'm just wondering if there's a list of UK focused Lemmy communities anywhere? There are some, which I thought would already exist, that I've not been able to find.

Apologies if I'm missing something, I'm new to Lemmy having been a reddit user for 15 years (although I've been using Mastodon for a while, so generally used to the fed way of doing things).

I'm not sure if there's an official list but we've got a couple of UK-focused instances popping up, feddit.uk and lemmy.org.uk although both have been having stability issues I believe.

Community-wise apart from whatever is on those I know there's !unitedkingdom@lemmy.ml if you're into the more serious side of things.

Thanks, I'll take a look. I was surprised I couldn't find a community for London for example, so I've just created one !london@lemmy.world . Feels like there are lots of other significant gaps for other major towns and cities, sports teams etc. I'm sure it will get there.

[–] TeaHands@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Looks like there's one on lemmy.ml as well but it's empty. This is a useful tool if you've not seen it https://browse.feddit.de/

Generally though I think a lot of people are glomming together into bigger more general communities until such time as a more specific one is needed. Feels more active, that way. But you do you! :)

[–] sijt@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

I couldn't see any others when I searched earlier (I tried the browse sites and searching - I may just be really bad at it or I guess there are some scaling issues with the recent influx of users, I'm getting a fair few timeouts and things).

I've no real desire to run a community so I'd be happier if there was an existing one. Fair point on the more general communities at this stage, I saw a couple pop up for other UK cities in the trending list so went looking for London and came up blank. It's not something I'm wanting to push at all, so I'll leave it as is and if people use it, that's ok, and if not, that's also ok.

Unhelpful comment but i definitely saw a London community earlier: https://feddit.uk/c/london (will that link work?)

[–] sijt@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Interesting, it doesn't show up when I search for it, I wonder if it's bene de-federated or something? it would be great if there was another one, I've no real desire to run a community so would be happy to go to an existing one.

[–] TeaHands@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

The search sometimes takes a few seconds to actually pull new communities, and in the meantime looks like it hasn't worked. But in this case you do seem to have indexed it correctly so this link should now work 👍

My husband is asleep, the house is quiet. I'm loving it. Just relaxing and knitting, peacefully. Not much sun for me today.

[–] thegiddystitcher@beehaw.org 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Peace and quiet, knitting, no sun...sounds like the perfect day to me!

[–] mortuum@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

It has been lovely. :)

We've recently moved. The house is basically in order - give or take a couple of stacks of boxes in the corner - and the shed is kinda there too, so this weekend is 'doing things in the garden' with hedge trimming the first on the list, along with scanning Gumtree for a suitable mower. I am not going to be borrowing our new neighbour's one for a third time however friendly and happy about it he is.

[–] TeaHands@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Yeah that's veering into "unintentional friendship" territory right there

Having an absolutely lovely day filled with various food from the 2 food festivals around me!

I woke up to a load of noise downstairs, went to investigate assuming it was my cat… who I couldn’t see. No problem, I thought.

Stood in the kitchen making a cuppa and I hear a very sorry meow, so obviously assumed my poor boy was hurt!

No. Completely wrong. Some random cat is sat on the windowsill in my living room. Dead lovely little thing that enjoyed a bit of fuss before I let it back out into the world!

I don't have anything planned today so I will probably just play some HOI4 and relax, definitely not going outside in these temperatures if I can avoid it though.

[–] rayquetzalcoatl@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Gotta smash through some freelance work, tidy up the lounge, and then go drinking! Glorious day for it at the moment!

Moved out of York earlier this year and will be heading back for a proper visit for the the first time since the move today. Going to be strange driving past the place I lived for years but on the plus side, it's one of the few places in the UK with a taco bell!

[–] sideone@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

one of the few places in the UK with a taco bell!

If it's anything like the US taco bell, probably best avoided. Enjoy York though, it's lovely.

[–] honeyontoast@beehaw.org 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Never been to the US to try theirs but we like it.

[–] sideone@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Maybe the UK ones are better. US food standards are woeful so that probably didn't help my (single) experience of them. Will probably try it if they ever come near us.

[–] thatwill@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

There are more and more taco bells in the UK now... My town has two, both shared with KFC locations.

I can't imagine me going out of my way to eat there though when other food exists...

Dreadfully tired after a late night of doom scrolling, but the day is glorious and there's work to do outside, so it'll probably balance out. Good afternoon friends!

Hey everyone, I got my soccer field and yard to mow today. Got probably 6 hours of mowing to accomplish with my crappy husqvarna. Has a 54" deck though and cruise control at least. Really needs an oil change too. It's almost 6am here, so I'm thinking of starting extremely early. After I get done I'm going to 0ull some more wooden logs out of the ground of my property. Last owners had horses, we don't want any, so all the fences are coming down.

Haven't figured out what to put in the empty holes left by the wooden logs yet...if I should put a bunch of top soil or maybe gravel first or sand then top soil. Any experts here about landscaping?

Spending the day with friends setting up their place to play D&D and consume copious amounts of barbeque tomorrow!

[–] amscan 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Already been to do my weekly shop because I can't stand Aldi at peak times. Now I'm sitting waiting for an Amazon parcel (don't usually shop at Amazon if I can help it but it was the only place that had the item I needed) and no indication of what time it'll arrive yet. Hoping it's soon!

Also I risked hanging the washing out on the line despite thunderstorms being predicted.

Happy Saturday 😁

[–] TeaHands@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Early morning Aldi? Risky washing? Your life sounds wild! 😄

[–] amscan 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

ha. I wish I could say it's because I'm recovering after being in hospital last month but I think it's just my life as a spinster.

[–] TeaHands@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

It's practically noon and I'm still in my pyjamas. Definitely no judgement here 😅

Hope you're back to feeling 100% soon!

Toddler up at 520 so we're downstairs watching the Red Bull Soapbox race on TV.

Meant to be paddleboarding tomorrow but the glorious sunshine of the last ten days has been replaced with a thunderstorm forecast, so that might get knocked on the head.

[–] rayquetzalcoatl@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

How was the soapbox race? I didn't even realise it was on today!

[–] aconstnull@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Roblox with my youngest, tv with my wife, gym, then Overwatch2 and beers! Not much sun for me today! But should be a good one anyways
