Welcome to c/news! Please read the Hexbear Code of Conduct and remember... we're all comrades here.

Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

-- Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed. --

-- All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. --

Well, Iran and their allies' response may happen sometime this week and apparently they aren't talking to the US in order to negotiate how and where they will hit Israel (and Shoigu arrived in Tehran rather auspiciously), the Bangladeshi government just fell, F16s have been given to Ukraine, there are fascist riots in the UK, and Japan just had its worst stock fall since 1987 and seems to be taking several other countries/corporations with it. I don't really know where to look right now.

The COTW (Country of the Week) label is designed to spur discussion and debate about a specific country every week in order to help the community gain greater understanding of the domestic situation of often-understudied nations. If you've wanted to talk about the country or share your experiences, but have never found a relevant place to do so, now is your chance! However, don't worry - this is still a general news megathread where you can post about ongoing events from any country.

The Country of the Week is Iraq! Feel free to chime in with books, essays, longform articles, even stories and anecdotes or rants. More detail here.

Israel-Palestine Conflict

If you have evidence of Israeli crimes and atrocities that you wish to preserve, there is a thread here in which to do so.

Russia-Ukraine Conflict

Examples of Ukrainian Nazis and fascists
Examples of racism/euro-centrism during the Russia-Ukraine conflict

Sources:

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful. Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.
On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Pro-Russian Telegram Channels:

Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.

https://t.me/Slavyangrad ~ A few different pro-Russian people gather frequent content for this channel (~100 posts per day), some socialist, but all socially reactionary. If you can only tolerate using one Russian telegram channel, I would recommend this one.
https://t.me/s/levigodman ~ Does daily update posts.
https://t.me/patricklancasternewstoday ~ Patrick Lancaster's telegram channel.
https://t.me/gonzowarr ~ A big Russian commentator.
https://t.me/rybar ~ One of, if not the, biggest Russian telegram channels focussing on the war out there. Actually quite balanced, maybe even pessimistic about Russia. Produces interesting and useful maps.

https://t.me/boris_rozhin ~ Russian language.
https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a 'propaganda tax', if you don't believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.

The Kursk offensive doesn't change the fundamental situation along the main front but it's really embarrassing for Russia to get its nose bloodied like this, especially as the image of Ukraine as a bloodied nation on its last legs was really starting to sink in. Politically this will have given western support for Ukraine a shot in the arm which is the opposite of what Russia needs if it wants to end the war sooner rather than later. Domestically it's a major setback for the United Russia govt which erodes confidence they had won back after the disastrous first months of the war.

Really just feels like this war is going nowhere fast.

https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/us-personnel-hurt-attack-against-base-iraq-officials-say-2024-08-05/

WASHINGTON, Aug 5 (Reuters) - At least five U.S. personnel were injured in an attack against a military base in Iraq on Monday, U.S. officials told Reuters...

Two Katyusha rockets were fired at al Asad airbase in western Iraq, two Iraqi security sources said. One Iraqi security source said the rockets fell inside the base. It was unclear whether the attack was linked to threats by Iran to retaliate over the killings...

The U.S. officials, who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity, said one of the wounded Americans was seriously injured. The casualty count was based on initial reports which could still change, they said.

Swedish government broadcaster SVT is reporting on a folder containing advice on what to to "if the war or the crisis comes". The folder will be distributed to all households this autumn.

Being a highly developed country poor in quality farmland, Sweden imports half of its food. This is an obvious weakness if "the war or the crisis" severs global supply chains. Authorities are warning that the result will be felt in shops "within days" if imports are stopped.

Luckily, the Swedish government knows what people should do if the shops suddenly run out of food: Forage for food like berries, fruit and mushrooms in the forest. I'm sure there will be plenty to replace the missing half of the food supply.

A spokesperson for the Swedish authorities says:

Everyone needs to understand that you need to take personal responsibility in crisis preparedness. That you have extra food and water at home and thinks about what it would mean if you could no longer buy food? If the water no longer came out of the faucet? If the cell phone no longer works? Do I need help or can I help a neighbour? Community and preparedness guess together.

Omg is it over?

Did Russia just lose?

Did Ukraine just annex Russia?

Is Israel winning? Is Israel running victory laps around Gaza and Iran????? Are they now the eternal god-kings of the middle east???

Did China just collapse?

Did the US become the eternal hegemon?

Is the US mass-distributing mind control chips to all dissenters to ensure that their hegemony is never challenged again?

Is worshipping the US now the world's religion?

Is worshiping the US now a biological need equivalent to food and water?

Is it over?

Now with the Olympic Games coming to an end it is important to think of the things that matter. Like how the USADA let cheating athletes continue to compete under the 'we need you to go deep undercover use even more PEDs' story. And sometimes them just very conveniently giving out sentences that'll allow their athletes to still compete in competitions like Wesley Kitts. It's pretty obvious that the US is just doing whatever and has been using the fact that the olympic comitee is primarily staffed by westerners to do some of the most blatant cheating.

https://www.wada-ama.org/en/news/wada-statement-reuters-story-exposing-usada-scheme-contravention-world-anti-doping-code

WADA is now aware of at least three cases where athletes who had committed serious anti-doping rule violations were allowed to continue to compete for years while they acted as undercover agents for USADA, without it notifying WADA and without there being any provision allowing such a practice under the Code or USADA’s own rules.

According to Axios, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant informed U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin that Iran's military preparations indicate the possibility of a large-scale attack.

The report also talks about an attack within "days" like we've heard, but the large scale attack was a newer detail than caught my eye. Still unclear to me if this leak is Israel trying to get more money/weapons or based on something solid this time.

Athletes undercover? Global and U.S. anti-doping agencies clash over tactics (Aug 7, Reuters)

The global and U.S. anti-doping agencies are at odds over undercover tactics used by the American body to try to catch drug cheats, Reuters has learned.

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) says U.S. agency USADA broke the global code by letting several athletes it had caught between 2011 and 2014 violating drugs rules go undercover and keep on competing without prosecution in exchange for information on other violators.

USADA says the tactic is necessary and allowed, and wants to keep using it. WADA says it is against its code and that athletes caught breaking doping rules should not get to line up in races, potentially winning prize money and medals, without first being publicly prosecuted and sanctioned.

[...] The U.S. agency has defended letting drug rule violators compete so they could act as undercover informants, saying in one case such assistance had provided intelligence to a U.S. federal law enforcement investigation into a human and drug trafficking scheme.

So what's the money on US intelligence agencies using positive doping tests to blackmail these athletes into not only spying on rival teams, but sabotaging them as well?

Remember in 2021, when several athletes from the Chinese swimming team tested positive after eating contaminated food? The US and other Western media outlets of course reported on it as some fantastical lie by the Evil Chinese, but the WADA report agreed with the Chinese investigation, noting that all subsequent and prior test showed that no systematic doping could have been taking place among the tested Chinese athletes:

From the WADA report:

In early April 2021, CHINADA informed WADA that it had initiated an investigation, involving the public health authorities, into the source of TMZ found in the samples. There were strong indicators that these cases could be a case of group contamination considering the following factors:

  • There were 23 swimmers, and 28 positive samples. All tested positive at the same time for TMZ at consistently very low levels (pg or low ng/mL range).
  • The swimmers were from different regions of China, with different coaches and from different swimming clubs.
  • The swimmers were in the same place at the same time when the positive samples arose.
  • A number of these swimmers were tested on multiple occasions during the swim meet. Some of them were tested on two or even three occasions on consecutive days. For several swimmers, the results varied from negative to positive within a few hours, which is not compatible with a doping scenario of deliberate ingestion nor with micro-dosing.
  • Some of the competing swimmers stayed in at least one other hotel. Three of those athletes were tested and none tested positive for TMZ.

It also goes into details about how hard USADA were pushing for a further investigation, disputing both CHINADA and WADA's findings without providing any counter evidence. Really, the whole thing is very 👀

On advice of someone here I isolated Hexbear into its own container half a year ago. I just noticed that all of youtube in this container is just recommending me commie shit and has an actual algorithm (this container does not have a youtube account). If they can spend resources tracking every accountless ephemeral user by their cookies or whatever, not knowing if that user will ever reappear on their platform, then they can do worse telemetry for their actually logged-in users. I would not be surprised to learn that the YouTube/Google algorithm is secretly being ran out of the Utah datacenter.

Google Loses Antitrust Suit Over Search Deals on Phones - Bloomberg (archive.ph)

A federal judge on Monday ruled that Google has illegally monopolized the search market, hading the government an epic win in its first major antitrust case against a tech giant in more than two decades.

Judge Amit Mehta in Washington said that the Alphabet Inc. unit’s $26 billion in payments to make its search engine the default option on smartphones and web browsers effectively blocked any other competitor from succeeding in the market.

...

The Justice Department hasn’t yet said what changes it will seek, though it presented evidence that efforts by European regulators to require Google to offer users a choice of search engines led few to switch. The agency could demand the separation of Alphabet’s search business from other products, like Android or Chrome, which would mark the biggest forced breakup of a US company since AT&T was dismantled in 1984.

Antitrust enforcers separately sued Google for allegedly monopolizing the technology used to buy, sell and serve display advertising online. In that case, which is set for trial in Virginia federal court next month, the government is seeking to force Google to sell off some of its advertising technology products.

By the time any of these remedies get litigated, there will be a new sheriff in town. Regardless of who wins the election, Lina Khan will be crucified and this momentary lapse of corporate rule will be corrected.

On a related note, this might cause Mozilla to go bankrupt lmao.

Russian sources are saying Ukrainians have been expelled from Martynovka, they are retreating from Korenevo direction as well. They are yet to take Sudzha either. Seems the tides have already reversed.

Belarus is mobilizing it’s troops on the Ukrainian border after multiple Ukrainian drones entered into Belarusian territory. This is causing a distraction to Kiev who cannot ignore these movements.

Average redditor/radlib, etc

“If both parties align on this particular issue [ie genocide - my note], it makes the most sense to vote for the lesser of two evils.”

In the same thread:

“I can agree with you that 5 evil is less than 10 evil. But 5 plus infinity evil (genocide) is equal to 10 plus infinity (genocide).”

And this gem: “There will always be single issue voters. At least genocide is a better single issue than most.”

CW Sexual Assault. Report of Israeli Rapeshttps://x.com/misterap7/status/1821003468556955936

Translation is as close to literal as possible

"Hamas captives sleeping on the ground open their eyes blindfolded. Here a group of reservist soldiers of 100 (soldiers) strength used to secure the facility. They take the terrorist (sic!). Here they are in a corner of the facility. Seemingly aware of the security cameras, they try to hide their deed with shields. The recording captures a moment of the crime ascribed to the reservists: The act of sodomizing the anus. Hours after this, the terrorist (sic) was taken EDIT: to a hospital. His injuries were defined as severe (literally "compounded"). The doctoral statement was clear: The injuries were introduced by an object."
