Be me in army

mandatory in my shitty country

first time we noob soldiers fire our guns

we lay in the ground and get ready

drill instructor yells "are you ready?"

i yell back "ai ai captain"

random guy two rows away yells " i cant hear you" drill instructor mad and tries to find out who mocked him

i yell again "oooooo"

random guy shots a rock 10 meters in front of him from laughter ( the target was 300 meter away)

dust rises up and one general runs and screams at drill instructor

we march back to camp 10 kilometers instead of driving

i am attending the "i cant hear you" guy wedding next week

They're shooting for the first time and the targets are 300m away?

Seems plausible from my own shooting drill experience. But the targets are a bit bigger than you are probably imagining.

I think rookie privates are starting out at 80 to 150 meters with most of their shots.

We had 50 - 300 all at the same day in the same range.

You are probably overestimating the quality of the training conscripts in anons shitty country receive. Also, for me that was over 30 years ago, so maybe your are right, I'm a little hazy on the details. But two things i remember clearly: a) the targets where gigantic and b) nobody even checked if we actually landed a shot.

I was just guesstimating from memory, am sure you’re right also. I know the 300 meter targets are there, of course, but I think most shots are taken at closer targets. (If for no other reason than they’re distributed among multiple targets from short range out to the long one.)

The first time you shoot your weapon (at least from an american basic training perspective) is when you learn to zero your weapon. That will be at 25 meter targets. You might shoot more later in the day but usually it takes a full day to get everyone zeroed. The next day is usually qualifying with your rifle. Those targets are 25-300 meters.

Yes exactly, you’re right.

With a general attending a recruit's shooting range and personally berating a drill sergeant in front of everyone?

That would be like the CEO of Walmart going into a store to berate a cashier.

Plus the drill instructor was a captain? I mean...

Could be Switzerland. We love our old fashioned marksmanship here.

These texts always end with a wedding.
