I know it's sort of trite, but every time I see one of these stories, it reminds me of how difficult it was to convince my dad to stop driving.

And now we get to have the conversation as a nation. Maybe it will give some people courage at a difficult time and save some lives on the road.
I mean I get it. We're all people, we want our dignity. I was diagnosed bipolar and my biggest fear was having a mental breakdown and being locked away for the rest of my life. I hate the thought of not being able to be my own person with the freedom to navigate my destiny. I take my meds, I eat right, I exercise, I go to therapy, and I do so so I don't end up involuntarily sanctioned. I want to build my own career, find love, see the world and experience what there is to experience and I don't want that to go away.
Older folks are still humans who experience the same emotions as we all do, and they also want their dignity like we all do. It's easy for us to pass these off as grumblings of senile folks, but from their perspective they were at the top of their careers yesterday and now they are being shoved out by society.
Biden needs to drop out, but I understand his hurt.
I know it's a tired cliche, but I wish I had more upvotes to give you.
I didn't want to go into any details, partly because I was counting on people who had gone through the same thing to just get it, but mostly because it would take at least a couple of paragraphs to even scratch the surface of the whole complex issue, and that wasn't directly relevant at the time.
And you nailed it.
I clearly remember - the worst part of the whole ordeal wasn't the times when he refused to face the fact that his faculties had diminished to the point that he could no longer drive safely - that was just frustrating. The worst part was the look of fear and dejection he'd get when he'd let down his guard enough to actually face that fact - those times when I could see that he fully understood and really agreed, and it crushed him.
So... yeah.
I feel angry and betrayed that he decided to hold out this long in the first place potentially fucking up the works for another candidate. If he drops out that is.
Seriously. He's said twice that he's not dropping out and if he's serious then he needs to campaign like never before and silence all the critics. If you're in it then get in it to win Joe!
He's tired and such right now apparently, and can't even campaign, but also very determined to not drop out. 😭
He has COVID so no public appearances for a while, oopsie.
When Trump offered a new debate, Biden should have IMMEDIATELY taken him up on it aggressively. That was the moment I felt like he was never going to do what it took to even potentially win.
The writing has been on the wall for months. If his debate performance was regarded as warmly as his last SoTU we wouldn't need to have this discussion but when a large portion of your base is abandoning an incumbent, you need to read the room.
Months?!? Many of us saw this coming 3 years ago
You gotta admit he caught a bump on that last SoTU though. Fox News was legit scared of that Biden.
Biden's selection as Obama's VP 16 years ago was talked about a good capstone to a long career in politics.
Seriously nobody in their 80s is mentally fit enough to lead a county.
Once again America is going to be set back multiple centuries because an old fuck didn't know when to quit.
...AGAIN.
I'm kind of more inclined to blame Trump and the GOP, but you are not wrong...
The word you’re looking for is “complicit”
Back when the left actually existed, before 80 years of violent worldwide political suppression, we called people like the DNC “collaborators”.
I can't remember, is this a second or third time he's been forced out of a race?
The window for this to work is getting real narrow
Do you think it is still open? Any new candidate is going to get "sorry, our state's deadline has passed - we'll remove Biden from the ballot, but can't possibly register the new person" from some critical states, it'll get litigated throughout the rest of the year, and the supreme court will eventually rubber-stamp it.
From Wikipedia: "Although the Ohio ballot access issue was resolved, the DNC has stated that it will continue with a virtual roll call vote [1-7 Aug] in order to avoid litigation from Republicans".
The two states that applied to both pushed back their deadlines explicitly to accommodate the Democratic National Convention - so yes, it's still open.
The window for this to work would have been before the primaries.
Or just having a primary in the first place.
I feel angry and betrayed that the guy who got elected by heavily implying he'd be a one term "caretaker" president went and used the power we gave him to help slaughter and starve a bunch of innocent men, women and children and is now clinging to power in the face of record unpopularity and is costing us our democracy.
The narcissistic entitlement of this man is quite literally Trump-like in its scale. Acting like a child having his toy taken away.
No one cares that you spent your whole life chasing the presidency, Joe. You're unpopular and your legacy will be that of the guy who funded one of the most egregious genocides of this century.
by heavily implying he’d be a one term “caretaker” president
He never said that. Unnamed people that had no authority to say it did, but he and his campaign explicitly said he had no intention of only running one term.
Like I said, it was heavily implied to get him into office. He never corrected anyone because he knew it was helping him.
“No, I never have,” Biden said when asked by a reporter on Wednesday if those discussions were taking place. “I don’t have any plans on one term.”
What do you mean he never corrected anyone? I already provided a link with him and his campaign explicitly saying that he had no intention of only running one term.
"Acting like a child having his toy taken away."
Dementia has that effect
To be fair, he clearly was saying in 2020, he's only in it to keep the orange menace out. And here we are 4 years later and the orange shitstain is threatening again.
Biden feels angry and betrayed by top Dems
First time.
So the "Oh no! Bernie's running, do something!" feeling
so now we have two sociopathic dinosaurs running for office for the exact same reason: their overinflated ego. hooray for us.
Maybe he can just get ready to run in 2028?
I'd support Biden 2032.
2040, final offer.
Gotta say, this whole thing has taken the wind out of the RNC pretty effectively. Kept it from being the only story in the news, despite Donald Trump saluting Hulk Hogan.
He is betrayed by top Dems.
This is the best summary I could come up with:
Feeling angry and betrayed after numerous Democrats have called on him to step aside as the party’s presidential nominee, Joe Biden and his family may be coming to grips with the notion that he will have to leave the race.
Two sources familiar with the situation told NBC News that there are raw feelings at play as the Democratic National Convention is due to start in about a month’s time.
In Milwaukee, where the Republican National Convention ended on Thursday, Biden’s deputy campaign manager Quentin Fulks said the president “is not wavering on anything”.
One source said Monday could be a “big day” if Biden hasn’t withdrawn by then, with a bigger push for him to call it quits as congressional Democrats return from recess.
Biden is self-isolating with Covid-19 at his beach house in Delaware, where he has reportedly become more “receptive” to the notion that he may have to step aside, one Democratic adviser told CNN.
Two people familiar with the talks noted that any departure would have to put the party in the best possible place to beat Trump while also paying tribute for the more than 50 years Biden has spent in public office.
The original article contains 985 words, the summary contains 198 words. Saved 80%. I'm a bot and I'm open source!
